Keenly observed and irresistibly funny, My Salinger Year is a memoir about literary New York in the late nineties, a pre-digital world on the cusp of vanishing. After leaving graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a poet, Joanna Rakoff takes a job as assistant to the storied literary agent for J. D. Salinger. Precariously balanced between poverty and glamour, she spends her days in a plush, wood-paneled office—where Dictaphones and typewriters still reign and agents doze after three-martini lunches—and then goes home to her threadbare Brooklyn apartment and her socialist boyfriend. Rakoff is tasked with processing Salinger’s voluminous fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency’s form response and impulsively begins writing back. The results are both humorous and moving, as Rakoff, while acting as the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.

My Salinger Year, by Joanna Rakoff

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2014: Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there existed a world in which writers used typewriters, publishers and agents sent manuscripts (on paper!) via the U.S. Postal Service, and starry-eyed ambitious young people moved to New York to try their luck in the literary world. (Okay, so that last bit still holds true.) It was the late ‘90s when writer-to-be Joanna Rakoff got her first job in New York publishing as an assistant to the woman who represented the great reclusive author J.D. Salinger. In the winsome and meticulously observed My Salinger Year, Rakoff recounts her experiences as an earlier-era Lena Dunham-creation, complete with a ratty Brooklyn apartment, strident anti-establishment boyfriend, and big, big dreams. “We all have to start somewhere,” is how Rakoff begins her story of being young, gifted, and possessed of a coveted “editorial assistant” job that her parents (my parents, your parents, everyone’s parents) would call “secretary.” While it’s true that J.D. “Jerry” Salinger figures into the narrative--and rather sympathetically so--it’s a mistake to say he’s at the heart of it. Youth, adventure, hope, ambition, and a keen eye and ear are what make this book run; with it, Rakoff--author of the novel A Fortunate Age--takes her place among such illustrious coming-of-age-in-New-York writers as Sylvia Plath, Candace Bushnell, and, well, maybe even J.D. Salinger. --Sara Nelson

From Booklist *Starred Review* Rakoff, the author of a much praised first novel, A Fortunate Age (2009), chronicles her year working at the problematically retro New York literary agency that had been representing the reclusive, nearly deaf, and still demanding J. D. Salinger since 1942. It’s 1996, and Rakoff’s chain-smoking boss is loud and cryptic. There is no computer on the premises, and Rakoff’s nebulous responsibilities entail using an ancient Dictaphone and handling Salinger’s heart-battering fan mail—hundreds of letters from lonely, angry teens and grateful military veterans who recognize in the author one of their damaged own. A poet involved with an unsavory, wannabe novelist, Rakoff misses her far more reliable college boyfriend. She finds her low-wage job enchanting, intimidating, ludicrous, and, briefly, thrilling when Salinger pitches the agency into a tizzy by allowing a teeny-tiny press to turn “Hapworth” (1965), his last published story, into a book. As Rakoff recounts her funny and wrenching personal predicaments, she also charts the quiet battle of attrition between the values of the old publishing world, personal and impassioned, and the aggressively invasive corporate imperative. An intriguing look at the ever-fascinating Salinger and a gracefully incisive tale of love and literature, creativity and survival. --Donna Seaman

Review

“A beautifully written tribute to the way things were at the edge of the digital revolution, and to the evergreen power of literature.” —Chicago Tribune“An affecting coming-of-age memoir. . . . Rakoff wisely—and deftly—weaves her Salinger story into a broader, more universal tale about finding one’s bearings during a pivotal transitional year into real adulthood.” —The Washington Post“Charming. . . . Glamorous. . . . Rakoff does a marvelous job of capturing a cultural moment. . . . What is most admirable is [her] critical intelligence and generosity of spirit.” —The Boston Globe“The loneliness of life after college [is] perfectly explained . . . There’s something Salingeresque about her book: it’s a vivid story of innocence lost.” —Entertainment Weekly“My Salinger Year describes its author’s trip down a metaphorical rabbit hole back in 1996. She arrived not in Wonderland, but a place something like it, a New York City firm she calls only the Agency. . . . An outright tribute to the enduring power of J.D. Salinger’s work.” —Salon  “A breezy memoir of being a ‘bright young assistant’ in the mid-1990s . . . Salinger himself makes a cameo appearance. . . . The ‘archaic charms’ of the Agency are comically offset by its refusal to acknowledge the Internet age.” —The New York Times Book Review“While it may be the Salinger cameo that initially draws readers in, it’s Rakoff’s effortlessly elegant, unhyperbolic prose and poignant coming-of-age story that will keep them engrossed through the very last word.” —BookPage    “Moving. . . . Heartfelt. . . . Rakoff uses Salinger—his fan mail and her favorite character, Franny—to help illuminate her inner life. . . . The memoir is touching, and it’s easy to empathize with how Rakoff, like Franny, is ‘trying to figure out how to live in this world.’”  —USA Today “Gentle, funny, closely observed. . . . The special unworldliness of the young literary person, who has reached adulthood without ever knowing or caring much about how the world works, is the real subject of My Salinger Year.” —Tablet Magazine  “Gripping and funny. . . . An involving, evocative tale that will have bookish women everywhere shuddering in recognition. Like Rona Jaffe’s novel of the 50s, The Best of Everything, it is concerned with what it feels like to move to the big city, to take on your first job, and to struggle to survive on a tiny salary when all the while your dreams are seemingly being snuffed out at every turn, and your love life is spiraling into muddle and mayhem. . . . So raw and so true.” —The Guardian “Hard to put down. . . . Demands sympathy, admiration, and attention. . . . Irresistible.” —The Sunday Times  “Intimate . . . elegant . . . graceful.” —The Sunday Telegraph “As memoirs go, this is possibly one of the year’s funniest, enthralling and entertaining . . . For an insight into old-fashioned publishing this must be hard to beat. Everyone smokes, returns tiddly from boozy lunches, and authors are treated with respect. It knocks spots off The Devil Wears Prada.” —The Sydney Morning Herald “Lures you in. . . . A story about growing up and getting better in a rapidly changing industry and world.” —Flavorwire, “June 2014 Books You Must Read”

Shtulman The very first thing I did upon closing the last page of this excellent book was to go to Amazon and wish list Franny and Zooey – a book I’ve been meaning to read for years. My Salinger Year made me understand – all over again – why J.D. Salinger was such a phenomenon…”because the experience of reading a Salinger story is less than reading a short story and more like having Salinger himself whisper his accounts into your year.”But make no mistake, this book is not about J.D. Salinger. Not really. It’s about Joanna Rakoff, but it could be about any young woman, straight out of college, naïve and wishful, striving to get in touch with what’s authentic and what’s real. For Ms. Rakoff, that means taking a job with sub-standard pay at a literary agency called the Agency – although just a little bit of Googling reveals that the Agency is Harold Ober Associates, a venerable agency that represented J.D. Salinger. There she worked for Phyllis Westberg (referred to as “my boss”) who fiercely protected his privacy and his legend.Young Joanna, living with her socialist would-be writer boyfriend, Don in a dumpy Wiliamsburg apartment, spends her days on her Selectric and Dictaphone…right at the time when more forward-thinking agencies have invested in computers. One of her tasks is to respond to J.D. Salinger’s many fervent fans through an Agency form letter; quickly, she abandons that practice and surreptiously begins writing her own heartfelt responses.Eventually, it dawns on us what “My Salinger Year” really means. It’s not just a year of spent responding to the voluminous and candid fan mail…and sometimes, speaking with “Jerry” himself. It’s also understanding the ongoing significance of Salinger in her life: “To somehow find a way to live in a world that sickens her. To be her authentic self. To not be the person the world is telling her to be, the girl who must bury her intelligence…who must compromise herself in order to live.”That’s not just a description of Franny. It’s an apt description of Joanna Rakoff. Indeed, these are sentences that can apply to each of us. This is a simply wonderful book, a book that’s custom-made for every aspiring writer, every passionate reader, and every dreamer who wants to face the world on her own terms.

Bristol When twentysomething Joanna Rakoff returns from graduate school in London to New York City in 1996, she's lucky enough to snare a "real job," with a literary agency (typing skills on a typewriter a plus!) and a boss who just happens to be J.D. Salinger's literary agent. Unbeknownst to the boss (who goes unnamed), Rakoff is one of the very few who has never read Salinger and thus at first thinks she's referring to Seinfield, when her boss gives her a lecture on "Jerry." Rule number one is that you always pass a call from Jerry onto the boss, and you also never, ever give out his personal details. In addition:"He doesn't want to read your stories. He doesn't want to hear how much you loved 'Catcher in the Rye."""I don't have any stories," I told her half-truthfully."Good," she said. "Writers always make the worse assistants."In fact, Rakoff, who goes on to publish a novel and poetry, finds that she has a knack for picking out possibilities from the slush pile and editing. But since part of her job is sending form letters to Salinger's correspondents, she becomes dissatisfied with the format, and begins to add personal touches to them. (A few she is unable to reply to for various reasons, but winds up keeping them after she leaves the agency.) She does wind up meeting "Jerry," and even having a few conversations with him, as he intends to publish his last short story "Hapworth," at the time. And - if you're like the reviewer this may make you even more envious - she gets to (briefly) meet Judy Blume. However, the bulk of the book is about Rakoff herself, adjusting to full-fledged adulthood. Away from the job, she deals with a less than ideal boyfriend, a home without heat, debt and friends who are no longer seem to share all her interests. While this is well trod territory, as is the memorable first job, Rakoff does bring a freshness to her descriptions. Many - especially the parts about how her boss slowly comes to acknowledge the necessity of computers and (gasp) the Internet are hilarious. I doubt I could be so generous and un-snarky in her shoes. Ultimately, the lessons Rakoff learns are not in themselves unique, but it's easy to cheer her on when she does begin to mature. Upon moving at the end, she even gives her plaid skirts to Goodwill. "After all, I was not a schoolgirl anymore."

Salinger. The agency deliberately refused to modernize, so her job involved typing documents that her boss dictated on a Dictaphone. Computer literate, she had to learn to produce these documents on an IBM Selectric typewriter (I can remember when these were state of the art and the envy of every typist!). The agency, and Rakoff's boss in particular, are the guardians of Salinger's famed privacy, and Rakoff's job involves fending off all efforts by fans, publishers, journalists, and everyone else to get in touch with J.D. During the year, she comes to know Salinger somewhat, through frequent phone conversations and one in person meeting. Though well read, she had somehow missed Salinger's works, so towards the end of the year, she spends a long weekend reading them all. She knows by year's end that she does not want to spend her life as a literary agent for others. Instead, she will become an author herself. Fortunately for us, Rakoff's year of Salinger provided her with the material for this compelling tale and gave her a life-long appreciation for Salinger's work. I practically read this book in one sitting, and now want to re-read all of Salinger. Highly recommend.

What was it like to live in the Hoovervilles of the Great Depression? How were the shacks constructed? What was at the end of a soup kitchen line? Most histories of the Great Depression look at the era from the perspective of the movers and shakers of the time or follow a single person or family. Hooverville and the Unemployed gives a street view of what it was like to live in Seattle during the worst economic collapse in world history. This book also follows the newly unemployed men and women of the era as they tried to pick themselves up and build an organization to feed, clothe and care for one another. Finally, it reveals the pitfalls and successes of President Roosevelt’s New Deal programs as seen from the man behind the shovel.

Trinidad, a streetwise mutt, finds that communicating with humans and her pedigreed neighbor is a big chunk of gristle in her life. What she lacks in pedigree she more than makes up for in pluck, nosing out the most from each day. She could help us learn how to get more from life if we could hear outside our limited range of sound waves. We can’t help our inadequate sense of smell either, but let’s face it, we’re just too busy to use our full potential. Trinidad’s neighbor, Stanley, is private, knowledgeable and always right—except when he misunderstands what he learns from his scientist owner. The Old One created the world— the order in which each life form came into being and how and why dogs were created to serve a purpose bigger than themselves, one very much related to humans. This story comes straight from the dog’s mouth, showing what it might be like to have canine values and priorities and to be members of a species sometimes misunderstood or even abused—yet maintain a joyful spirit.

This richly illustrated book tracks the evolution of Fredericksburg architecture and guides readers through the streets of this once-westernmost German settlement in America, pointing out the log, fachwerk, and stone buildings that housed the town’s full-time residents, its weekenders, and the businesses of the nineteenth century. Abundant with details uncovered by Hafertepe in his research, including corrections to construction dates based on newly tapped records, this guide features those buildings visible to visitors from the public streets and sidewalks. The author lists which buildings are open for tours and which ones have been converted to public use such as museums, stores, or restaurants. The buildings of Fredericksburg reflect memories of classic German construction and technique with a gradual transition to American styles, including a few remarkable decades that were neither purely German nor American distinctively but saw the creation of a regional style. This book allows readers to walk down the streets of Fredericksburg and see the layers of Texas history on display: everything from a pioneer log cabin to an art deco courthouse.

It is a journey through time and space that, in my opinion, is destined to become a classic.A tribute to the heritage of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, this book offers both architectural and historic details of each selected structure, with information about its builder, occupants, uses, and relationship to the larger community. The author combines exhaustive research with an obvious love and mastery of his subject. It must have been a challenge to synthesize massive amounts of technical and arcane information into an easily-accessible and well-written portable guidebook. Mr. Hafertepe succeeds admirably. Also included are outstanding recent color photographs of 210 sites, beginning with the symbolic Fredericksburg Vereins-Kirche replica and ending with the Texas White House at the LBJ National Park in Stonewall. These photographs of existing structures in town and county create a record of independent merit that is well worth the guide's price. You will want to savor the text, too, but a slow pace is necessary to avoid being overwhelmed by the abundance of detail. I highly recommend you select a short route (it is easy to follow the book's excellent sequencing and clear addresses), read each entry in advance, then take the guide and a larger town map with you on your tour. Fredericksburg's historic streets make walking a pleasure.Personal note: I have a home in the historic district (it gets two sentences in the book, woo hoo!) and have spent many hours walking along Main Street and throughout town, usually being towed by my dog. I cannot count the times I've wondered about places I pass. This book is exactly what I would have requested. I am overjoyed that the author and publishing team had the dedication, perseverance, and expertise to create it (I only wish I knew more about my house!). I can vouch for the difficulty of taking good photographs of most of these structures and hope the photographer was not squished like a bug by a vehicle or pedestrian somewhere along Main Street.Kudos also go to Texas A&M University Press for a beautifully-crafted, sturdy travel guide. I intend to test its durability until one of us wears out. TAMU Press field guides are always excellent, and this one is a star among stars. Finally, to Professor Hafertepe: DANKE SEHR! One copy of your guide is already well-thumbed. My reserve copy resides in the fine company of Terry Jordan's Texas Graveyards and his father's Yesterday in the Texas Hill Country, a spot it well deserves.

Review for The Duke of Dark Desires by Miranda Neville By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***The Duke of Dark Desires by Miranda NevilleBook Four of The Wild Quartet seriesPublisher: AvonPublication Date: December 30, 2014Rating: 4 starsSource: eARC from Edelweiss***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***Summary (from Goodreads):Wanted: Governess able to keep all hours . . .Rebellious Julian Fortescue never expected to inherit a dukedom, nor to find himself guardian to three young half-sisters. Now in the market for a governess, he lays eyes on Jane Grey and knows immediately she is qualified—to become his mistress. Yet the alluring woman appears impervious to him. Somehow Julian must find a way to make her succumb to temptation . . . without losing his heart and revealing the haunting mistakes of his past.Desired: Duke skilled in the seductive art of conversation . . .Lady Jeanne de Falleron didn't seek a position as a governess simply to fall into bed with the Duke of Denford. Under the alias of Jane Grey, she must learn which of the duke's relatives is responsible for the death of her family—and take her revenge. She certainly can't afford the distraction of her darkly irresistible employer, or the smoldering desire he ignites within her.But as Jane discovers more clues about the villain she seeks, she's faced with a possibility more disturbing than her growing feelings for Julian: What will she do if the man she loves is also the man she's sworn to kill? What I Liked:Well, this book wasn't quite what I expected. It was so much more than whatever I thought it would be. I love lord/governess stories (though I feel like there aren't many), so I couldn't wait to dig into this romance. As many of you know, I didn't really like The Ruin of a Rogue (book two of this series). This one (book four) caught my attention because of the lord/governess thing. But there was so much more to this book!Jane Grey isn't a governess - she is a French aristocrat, fallen from grace. Everyone believes that she and her family are dead, murdered nine years ago when an English lord betrayed them, stole expensive paintings from them, and left them to hang. She has known for years that a Mr. Fortescue was behind it all... potentially the same Duke of Denford, Julian Fortescue, her new employer. Jane has every intention of getting her revenge, but she doesn't expect to fall in love with the man...Ahhh, this book was so complex! It's not just a romance novel. There is so much scheming and betrayal and even politics in this book, it's fabulous. I didn't like a lot of things about The Ruin of a Rogue, but I'm glad I wasn't deterred by that novel. The complexity and depth of this novel was fascinating!Jane is the model of a perfect governess. She schools Julian's three half-sisters into proper ladies, all while keeping up pretenses that she is an Englishwoman from St. Lucia, with an excellent reference and a mysterious past. I really like Jane! She is direct and forward and proper and ladylike. She has no problem telling Julian exactly how she thinks things should be done, but it's not done in a stuffy or bossy or annoying way.I like Julian a lot. That man is sinful, but he is also sweet and kindhearted. At first, it seems like he's kind of a meanie, because he doesn't want to take in his three half-sisters as his mother and her latest husband gallivant across the globe. Honestly, I feel for him, and understand. But he slowly begins to really like his sisters. I love seeing this progression. I also love seeing him fall for Miss Grey. The romance is fabulously slow-burn. It's all sorts of wrong, for the duke and his governess to be doing anything improper, but Julian knows no boundaries, and Jane has no honor to lose. She wants to kill him, anyway, but she also wants to kiss him. Tough decision...I thought I would be constantly annoyed by Julian's younger half-sisters, but I really liked them! The oldest is fifteen, the youngest is... seven? Nine? Somewhere around there. The author does a really great job of making sure that readers really like the girls, in addition to Julian and Jane.I won't go too deep into Jane's past and the huge conflict that made her go after the Fortescue family and how everything comes down to her and Julian. But trust me, it gets twisted. And intriguing! I really liked how much bigger it was than Jane's family and Julian's family. There was a country involved, in a time of war. You really have to read the book to know what I mean!Overall, I really enjoyed this book! The characters were really likable, the chemistry was sizzling, and the mystery/story was captivating. What I Did Not Like:The cover. Haha. Not that the author can do anything about that. But anyway - I wanted one or two scenes more between Julian and Jane...Would I Recommend It:I really liked this historical romance novel, so yes! It's not the most amazing historical romance novel of the year, but I am so glad that I didn't miss this one (especially after how I felt about The Ruin of a Rogue).Rating:4 stars. I haven't read books one or three of the series, but I'm glad I read two of the four books! This last book is probably the best (in my opinion).

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Jane is compelling, Julian's sisters are charming, and Julian grows a heart By amtmcm Jane Grey was born as Lady Jeanne de Falleron, the daughter of a French Marquis. Sadly, her parents and two younger sisters were guillotined during the French Revolution when she was just fifteen years old. She was disguised as their English governess with copies of her identity papers, so she escaped. Her family was working with an English agent to also escape, but they were betrayed. She knows the man's name was Mr. Fortescue, and that he's related to a duke. Nine years later, she's now twenty-four and determined to find him and avenge her family's deaths.Julian Fortescue is the new Duke of Denford. He's recently won a legal battle with his cousins to retain part of the family fortune and estates so he actually has money to run the dukedom. Early in the book, his mother pays him a visit and informs him that she's remarried for a third time and is leaving his three half -sisters under his care while she sails to America with her new husband. Julian needs to hire a governess and Jane sees this as a perfect opportunity to get inside the house and snoop for information about the Fortescue family members. Julian hires Jane on the spot with the idea that he'll seduce her. This all happens within the first three chapters and sets up the plot of the book. There's excellent character development of Jane and her three charges (Julian's sisters). Every time the story focussed on Jane, I was drawn in and fully engaged. But I found Julian to be flat, one-dimensional and boring until 45% into the book. He's self-centered and shallow. He feels remorse about a past event that he explains early in the book (the reader knows his involvement with Jane's family, but doesn't know how the info will be revealed to her until about 70% into the story). We sense there's more to him, but this side is not developed until he takes a more active role with his sisters and deepens his relationship with Jane. Then the story takes off and gets really good.Miranda Neville's writing is crisp, intelligent and polished, as always. My favorite book by her is still Confessions from an Arranged Marriage (Avon Romance), but not everyone enjoys reading about political processes, which I do. This book has elements of mystery and of course romance. The first 65% of the book takes place in London and then finishes at the duke's country estate with intrigue and revelations. The relationship between Jane and Julian is believable, the sisters are charming and there are multiple secondary characters to add interest to the story. I enjoyed this book and recommend it!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Dialogue is clever, the smoldering looks lead with palpable feeling to the connection By Gaele The third in this series that I have read, Miranda Neville brings her skills to create characters and a storyline that feels plausible, with a slow discovery of the attraction and love that is blooming. Julian is well-comforted in his role as rake and seducer, and far less prepared or confident in his ability to parent his three young half-sisters or the title of Duke. He’s hard not to like, this bit of arrogant rogue with a devil-may-care attitude toward consequences. Even with some despicable background, his development showed the true delight that he found in his sisters, and the desire to ‘do better’ for them. It wasn’t instant – but there is a kindly heart beneath the layer of show and pragmatism.Jane / Jeanne is far more than just a simple governess: her desire to find the “Fortescue” who caused her family’s demise has driven her to great lengths and deceptions. Posing as Jane Grey, a simple governess who is taking charge of his sisters. A perfect set-up for the intrigue and twists that shall come. Understand that this is a time of great upheaval in England, with worries in the aristocracy about the not long past French Revolution, and the wars that follow. The country is rife with spies and agendas, and stories that are half-told and intertwined. Neville did get sidetracked a touch in the presentation of the twists and elements that will become important, and that information did distract from a growing, if slowly, attraction between Julian and Jeanne.A bit of a slow starter, this story interconnects with the others neatly, but can stand alone without great difficulty. Inclusion of historic details and some interesting flouting of conventionally accepted norms of society all help to develop a real interest in the characters and the outcome. There is a sense of possible in these stories, while firmly set in their time there is a modern edge to the characterizations that will resonate with readers. Dialogue is clever, the smoldering looks lead with palpable feeling to the connection between Julian and Jeanne, and the realization of their shared desire for love and a happy ending come with a satisfied sigh.I received an eArc of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Bloodlines, by Bruce Ducker

From Publishers Weekly In his timely, suspenseful and historically detailed novel, Ducker (Lead Us Not into Penn Station) brings together the worlds of contemporary Swiss banking and wartime Europe. In 1943, Hermann Steinmuller, a Swiss Jew, bankrolls an unseaworthy boat to take Jewish refugees from Budapest to Palestine. The boat sinks off the coast of Turkey, drowning Hermann and all the passengers. Flash forward to 1997. Peter Steinmuller is an American jazz keyboard player in a band that is fired by the cruise ship director when they arrive in Europe. Looking for work, he goes to Geneva, where, serendipitously, he comes upon an advertisement for the heirs of his grandfather Hermann's brother, Pietr. With the help of a quietly beautiful bank officer, Helene Durren, with whom he is soon intimate, he receives the proceeds of the account, a paltry 336 francs. He discovers, however, that the original account held 114,000 francs, most of which has been withdrawn by its trustee, Frederich Von Egger, a distinguished aristocrat and a pillar of rectitude active in humanitarian causes. When Peter goes to Von Egger's palatial estate and confronts him with his questions, Von Egger not only convinces Peter of the morality of his transactions with the account, but tells him that he and Pietr Steinmuller nobly helped Jews funnel their wealth out of Nazi hands. Helene, however, suspects that, far from helping fleeing Jews, Von Egger and Pietr Steinmuller were fleecing them. Peter sets off for Central Europe to track down the people whose names are on the old accounts for which Von Egger is trustee. The possible fraudulence of Von Egger's story becomes entangled with the question of whether Peter's grandfather is the heroic Hermann or the unscrupulous, anti-Semitic Pietr. By the time Peter unravels the mystery, readers have learned about the nefarious dealings of people who profited from the Holocaust. And although Ducker's prose sometimes lacks vibrancy, he deftly interpolates background material about jazz and neatly evokes such settings as Geneva and Budapest. (Feb.) From Library Journal Bloodiness become the central issue in this suspensful, well-crafted, and riveting novel. Young Peter Steinmuller, an American jazz pianist, has gone to Switzerland with a fellow musicina lookin for work. By accident he comes across a newspaper with an article that mentions his granfather's name, also Peter. The article discusses the unclaimed money of World War II victims in Swiss banks. Peter is led to Hungary, Israel, and back to the United States to discover what happened to the money in the bank account and, more importantly, to find out who is grandfather really was. To authenticate the story, whoe plot ideas have been historical texts. Film rights have already been sold for this intriguing novel in which friendships are easily betrayed and the underlying musical motifs lend special meaning to the protagonists. One of Ducker's previous works, Lead Us Not into Penn Station, won the Colorado Book Award for fiction. Recommended for all public libraries.Lisa Rohrbaugh, East Palestine Memorial P.L., OHCopyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist After Peter Steinmuller is dumped by his girlfriend in Boston, he takes a job as a jazz pianist on a European cruise ship. In the novel's opening chapters, he is fired from that job and arrested, and his motorcycle is confiscated. Those obstacles, however, are mere trifles compared with what's coming. By chance, Peter sees his exact name in a Swiss newspaper among a listing of potential beneficiaries of World War II unclaimed property. Because his parents are deceased, his search is motivated not just to claim whatever money may be at stake, but also to learn about his family--namely, was his father a good man or an evil man? The journey takes him to Zurich, Geneva, Budapest, Israel, Florida, Arizona, New York, and London. Peter is a likable hero but gullible, and he violates the first rule of international crime-busting: never tell friendly strangers on a train what you are up to! Fortunately, he has the help of a smart, sexy, and heroically devoted Swiss banker named Helene. James Klise

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a well written historical and psychological thriller By joseph s. berman Bruce Ducker taps into a modern sleuth story with important historical ramifications (the question of Jewish assets "lost" during WWII) to write a compelling work of fiction. The book is more than just a detective story about hidden asssets. Ducker develops an interesting and complex protagonist whose amateur detective work leads him to learn more about his own family history. Although the plot itself is somewhat obvious, the characters are first rate, as are the scenes from Zurich and Budapest.

Mr. Mulliner is a font of humor and great advice to the silly young male aristocrats of the early twentieth century. The humore is somehow never dated, and it will make the reader laugh out loud just as heartily now as it did when it was written. Mr. Mulliner is a character whose insights should never be missed!

Each short story is a hilarious anecdote about his nephews, nieces, cousins, uncles, etc etc and despite the shear volume of stories they never cease to feel fresh and funny.I am a huge fan of Wodehouse and though most people were introduced to Wodehouse via Jeeves and Bertie Wooster my first experience was Mr Mulliner. The Mulliner short stories truly are Wodehouse at his peak, and were written during the hey day of his popularity. I say this as someone who has read almost every story Wodehouse has written from the Picadilly Jim to Sunset at Blandings. The prose is excellent, the hyperbole magnificent. The stories told by Mr Mulliner concerning his various relatives are fast paced, witty, bright, and they never feel contrived or forced. In addition Wodehouse and his prose manage to evoke emotions, surprise, and amazement in a way not even the excellent Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie can replicate on screen. In fact despite the quality of the various screen adaptations of Wodehouse's work nothing can compare to Wodehouse's words. This particular collection contains my all time favorite short story "The Unpleasentness at Bludleigh Court". This is a tale of two sensitive poetic souls and the unholy influence of of the sportsmen at Bludleigh court. Summarized in the poetic lines "When life is dark and all is black, how sweet it is to pot a yak". In this story Wodehouse manages to satirize and parody both the poets of his day and the aristocratic sportsmen and country gentry.Even if you do not take the time to read every Mulliner short story you should definately jump in and read at least a few of the wonderful short stories as told by Mr Mulliner.

First Class Delight By Richard Liedholm The first thing to know is that this is Wodehouse: so if you have even read one of his books you already know about his beautiful use of language and the wonderful dialogue that he creates for all his characters. I suppose there are some that might sneer and say that if you have read one Wodehouse you have read them all. Well, yes, that's true in its way: he focused on comedy, the upper class, and a host of young lovers getting in and out of the wackiest situations. But as you go deeper and deeper into his library you will learn what amazing inventiveness the man had. And that brings us to Mr. Mulliner Speaking...This wonderful collection really soars for me. Many of the stories seemed like mini novels, so dense is the plot he created. As much as I enjoyed Meet Mr. Mulliner, which includes one of Wodehouse's major masterpieces: Honeysuckle Cottage, this second collection goes even further to make you laugh. And laugh I did! I won't delve on any single story here or give away any plot details; I just think that this collection is a delight from beginning to end, and it deserves the widest audience it can get. Don't let this one slip by. Give it a chance and I think you will find you were happy you did.

Outlaw Tales of Alaska: True Stories of the Last Frontier's Most Infamous Crooks, Culprits, and Cutthroats, by John W. Heaton

From the Back Cover From Unimak Island to Fairbanks and beyond, the Last Frontier was populated by characters as tough and as dangerous as any in the lower forty-eight states. Take the legendary Blue Parka Bandit—whose generosity earned him Robin Hood status among some, and whose flair for escapes kept folks on edge even after his arrest. Or Fred Hardy, who in 1902 achieved the dubious distinction of becoming the first convicted murderer hung by the feds in the Territory of Alaska. That’s not to mention “Klutuk,” whose murderous exploits spread fear through the hearts of trappers in his rugged domain. All this and more is yours for the reading in Outlaw Tales of Alaska, which introduces twelve of the most dramatic events and the most daring and despicable desperados in the history of the Last Frontier.

About the Author John W. Heaton is an associate professor of history at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The author of The Shoshone Bannocks: Culture and Commerce at Fort Hall, 1870-1940, he lives in Fairbanks.

There are historically accurate parts, such as these people existed ...but in between that information are colorful descriptions of the area, the Alaskan cold and life in the Last Frontier. It is a fun quick read and you will want to talk about it and pass it to a friend.
