By Kathleen McClain 2.5 starsWhile in Las Vegas, woman is swept off her feet by handsome ex-cop from Alaska—then gets pregnant. He invites her to visit in Alaska and she goes in order to decide whether she might want more from him. While she’s there, he gets involved in an investigation of the Russian mafia and there are lots of chases and shoot-outs and the like.I wanted to like this. I liked the previous novel about his brother Dylan. Martin does keep up the suspense. I couldn’t like it, however, despite the fact that I managed to finish it because, as I say, she does keep up the suspense. I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes however. What I didn’t like.Hero. I could not like him. I like a lot of alpha male heroes (eg, Kristen Ashley’s) but this one, not so much. Some examples of what I found off-putting: He decides he is attracted to her because she isn’t into sports or athletic activities but is a stay-at-home kind of woman despite the fact he is athletic and into sports. I didn’t like that in their initial sexual experience he calls her “baby.” He is dismissive about a child’s concerns about the possible murder of his father. I thought he cared for the heroine, but maybe he was just TOO realistic in his macho-ness---a 21st century version of the keep her barefoot and pregnant type.Credibility. Of course there is a lot of stretching of credibility in romance but sometimes it is stretched until it breaks. Like here. They were always doing things that were just too ridiculous or stupid. Examples: He gets in a shootout with the Russian mafia but despite the fact that a motel room is shot up and one bad guy is killed and his rental car is covered with bullets there are no repercussions. Supposedly the mob picked up the body and he paid the rental agency and motel for the damage. Another: He’s driving an SUV extremely fast on icy roads while being pursued by bad guys. He tells the heroine to hold the wheel and he leans out his window (WHILE driving) and starts shooting at the bad guys, eventually taking out one of their tires---all at full speed. One more: he and 3 friends go up against the Russian mafia guys and ask a 12 year old boy to be the their look-out.Dialogue. Tends to be rather wooden with lots of short, mundane exchanges which serve little purpose

Interesting Alaskan Suspense *** By Amazon Customer A good romantic suspense, but I dread to say, because I love Kat Martin's books, not one of my favorites. The quick fling knowing they have nothing in common starts out the book on the wrong foot for me. I cant really say wgat is wrong with this particular book except to say there just did not seem to be a real romance involved.I actually disliked both characters.I didnt care whether they got together or not. They were both selfish unloveable people . That being said; the rest of the characters were good.I was more interested in the boy and his aunt and her love life then the main event. It is well worth adding to your Kat Martin collection, but not my fave.

Though I am usually a fan of Kat Martin's books, this one just didn't have enough balance between character, action, story and romance for me. The premise was good, the characters certainly interesting, I just found myself skipping some of the action sequences. The pacing was fast of course, and the dialogue seemed appropriate to the characters and the situations. The story itself was good. Though part of a series, it stands alone just fine. I will definitely keep reading the series.*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
