50 of 53 people found the following review helpful. Uninteresting for the most part... By endlesswonderofreading How do you make George Sand seem like a person who led a very boring life? Well, Berg has the answer...and that answer is The Dream Lover...George Sand seems like one of those people who has just led this wonderful, interesting life. I had assumed that reading a fictional book about her would expand on that and make her come to life. Unfortunately, The Dream Lover was just dull, dull, dull. Mainly because this book focuses so little on her life as a whole as opposed to all of the numerous lovers she had. I like to think that this woman was more than the people she slept with and may have loved in real life, but in The Dream Lover, she is not.The Dream Lover seems to follow a predictable pattern. Sand is attracted to a person, she sleeps with that person, heartbreak befalls them, etc, etc, etc. And that's pretty much the bulk of the novel. I would have liked to know more about her life at her grandmother's estate...or of her relationship with her half-sister. I'd also would have liked to know more about her relationship with Solange, since it's barely alluded on throughout 80 percent of the novel and then tacked on to the last 20.Overall, I found The Dream Lover to be disappointing. Some of it was interesting (mainly the bit about her being in her Grandmother's estate, which should have been expanded upon), but most of it was just too boring. It has made me more interested in checking out Sand's works, but I still say you wouldn't be missing anything by not reading this.

Young Forty years ago I was enthralled by 19th century French writer George Sand and avidly read every one of her novels then available in English. Her novels were passionate as was her life which was filled with love affairs with famous men like composer Frederick Chopin. So I was thrilled to obtain an advance copy of Elizabeth Berg's new historical novel about Sand.The only way to judge this book was to ask myself if I knew nothing about Sand would this novel make me want to learn about her and more importantly would it make me and other readers seek out her novels. After reading it I can only sadly sigh and say no. Berg's writing is so stilted and the shifts in time so distracting that I often felt like throwing this novel aside in disgust. After spening 300 pages cataloguing her many lovers and virtually ignoring her novels Berg finally gets to her most famous lover, Frederick Chopin. However, by then Berg seems to have run out of steam and disposes of Chopin quicky. I had high hopes that this novel would create a resurgence of interest in Sand and her work, but I fear it won't. Still Sand's own novels deserve a wider audience.
22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating subject for a fictionalized memoir, although the passion and spark of George Sand doesn't quite come through By Carol S. George Sand, born Aurore Dupin, is a fascinating figure: she was a talented and prolific writer, but given the way human nature works, she's probably more remembered for her propensity to dress as a man and for her liaisons with other prominent figures, such as Chopin and de Musset. Elizabeth Berg tackles this complex and multilayered figure in the form of a fictionalized "memoir" -- Sand's life as she herself might have described it. It's a lot of territory to cover and Berg does a good job of synthesizing it, pulling out the most important vignettes and people in Sand's life. Berg captures the feel of the time period in the way she imagines Sand's voice. While I ultimately enjoyed the book and was glad I read it, there were a few reasons I didn't give it five stars: first, the book is a bit slow to get started. As I got to know Sand and the people in her life, the book became more interesting to me, but I didn't get grabbed by the book in the beginning. Second, I found the frequent shifts in time -- Berg goes back and forth between Sand's childhood, the early days of her marriage, and her post-separation life quite a bit in the beginning -- confusing. It would have worked better had Berg interspersed fewer, longer scenes with fewer shifts in time. Finally, the voice of Sand as she writes about her life was definitely arm's-length, the voice of someone who is looking back thoughtfully on her life. That makes it harder for the reader to feel as intensely about what's happening -- it makes it harder to get caught up in the book and lose yourself in it.Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and found Sand to be a fascinating and inspiring woman. I would have enjoyed it more had the imagined voice of Sand been more passionate and in the moment, rather than arm's length.
