3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a long strange trip By t martin In the beginning of the book I hated the main character and his friend who seem to be nothing more than the typical offensive ugly Americans on a debachaurus trip through Mexico. They appear to be shallow, egocentric morons. The type that you see on your travels that make you cringe and hope no one associates with you simply because of your common origin.However, as the story gets deeper into Mexico, and into the characters, you see that their Dionysian exploits are really part of a soul searching quest to find meaning and direction in life which is filled with heartache and suffering.The narrators multiple voices, sometimes debating in his head, explore questions of philosophy, physics and spirituality. My favorite parts of the book are the narrators little side trips into the history, culture and religion of ancient and modern Mexico which are original, informative, thought provoking and pretty damn funny.In spite of the warning, this is a must read for anyone embarking on travels through Mexico or the soul.

At once an LSD- and cerveza-fueled odyssey and an intimate reflection on the trappings of youth, Michael Tassone weaves a narration that is as engaging as it is thought provoking. The characters are immediately likable, yet they are not trite. The narrator, who is both intelligent and emotionally well rounded, delves into the unexplored corners of his psyche with a wit that keeps the story light. The book is never one nor the other: travelogue or philosophical soliloquy. It is a journey with an extraordinary setting. There are adventures and there are moments of quiet reflection. With lyrical prose and a generous spattering of alliteration, the author achieves a wonderful balance between the internal and external minds of the narrator. One of the most interesting aspects of the book are the author’s irreverent yet respectful “mytho-historical departures” that provide context and a backdrop. All in all, this is a wonderfully engrossing read you won’t want to put down.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pictures By P-Train The author masterfully paints pictures both vivid and blurry using every hue of Mexico's present and mythical past. The best "travelogue" written about Mexico. Soul searching is not overrated, no matter how it's done.
