I thought I was in jail." - Mary Mullins, an Irish immigrant By the middle of the 19th century, New York City’s population surpassed the unfathomable number of 1 million people, despite its obvious lack of space. This was mostly due to the fact that so many immigrants heading to America naturally landed in New York Harbor, well before the federal government set up an official immigration system on Ellis Island. At first, the city itself set up its own immigration registration center in Castle Garden near the site of the original Fort Amsterdam, and naturally, many of these immigrants, who were arriving with little more than the clothes on their back, didn’t travel far and thus remained in New York. Of course, the addition of so many immigrants and others with less money put strains on the quality of life. Between 1862 and 1872, the number of tenements had risen from 12,000 to 20,000; the number of tenement residents grew from 380,000 to 600,000. One notorious tenement on the East River, Gotham Court, housed 700 people on a 20-by-200-foot lot. Another on the West Side was home, incredibly, to 3,000 residents, who made use of hundreds of privies dug into a fifteen-foot-wide inner court. Squalid, dark, crowded, and dangerous, tenement living created dreadful health and social conditions. It would take the efforts of reformers such as Jacob Riis, who documented the hellishness of tenements with shocking photographs in How the Other Half Lives, to change the way such buildings were constructed. On New Year’s Day 1892, a young Irish girl named Annie Moore stepped off the steamship Nevada and landed on a tiny island that once held a naval fort. As she made her way through the large building on that island, Annie was processed as the first immigrant to come to America through Ellis Island. Like so many immigrants before her, she and her family settled in an Irish neighborhood in the city, and she would live out the rest of her days there. Thanks to the opening of Ellis Island near the end of the 19th century, immigration into New York City exploded, and the city’s population nearly doubled in a decade. By the 1900s, 2 million people considered themselves New Yorkers, and Ellis Island would be responsible not just for that but for much of the influx of immigrants into the nation as a whole over the next half a century. To this day, about a third of the Big Apple’s population is comprised of immigrants today, making it one of the most diverse cities in the world. Nope, it's still in Philadelphia. The battleship Oregon was scrapped. The liberty ships used steam reciprocating engines, not diesel. After listing some 500 ships sunk by U-boats, he says it totaled 2,000 tons. Typo. 2 million more likely.Still, the story of how we mobilized for this war, warts and all, is a magnificent story of human endeavor of that particular flavor American. He questions that is was the greatest generation. It was more like the unluckiest generation. Some won't like that, but after reading his book, I think he's made a case that some were great, others, so so, and a whole lot just barely got by. A great story, nevertheless. Much more evenhanded than Freedom's Forge, and despite my list of howlers, it has fewer than Forge as well.If you're curious as to how we got the job done of mobilizing American for World War II, you'll read this book.

Loses Forest For Trees By John Weinshel This is a poorly written book, on a terrifically interesting and relevant topic, that is at least twice as long as it need be. Mr. Klein quickly loses his way amongst an endless compendium of short lived agencies and the men (they were all men) who ran or didn't or should have or should not have run them. He has clearly done his homework, and appears intent on making us read all of it.I am proud that I made it a full third of the way through, before realizing I had completely forgotten what was going on at the beginning, and could not possibly summarize what I had read so far.Some of the same material is touched on quite elegantly in Lynne Olson's Those Angry Days, but I am still waiting to learn the story of how we bungled the runup to the war before finally awaking the sleeping giant.

What a joke; until I read this book I knew nothing about how the war was won. Sure, I knew of Rosie the riveter and her counterpart, Ralph. I even had my own victory garden but had no idea how it fit into the overall food production of the war.Did you know that developing the B-29 cost more than the Manhattan Project? Neither did I, but that’s a fact that I won’t soon forget now.The usual characters are largely missing from Maury Klein’s great book. They were off fighting the war while another cast provided them with the guns, ammunition, planes, radar, dehydrated potatoes, onions, tires, jigs, machine tools and a million and one other products and services that made it possible for the Eisenhowers, Pattons, Bradleys, Nimitzes, Halseys, Arnolds, MacArthurs and all the other generals and privates and seamen to Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition, so we could all stay free.I hesitate to name many heroes of the home front for fear of leaving some off the list. I knew many of the names and was happy to see them get their due and take their bow as Klein showcased them. But one name was not familiar to me, and I want to point out Donald Nelson as one who gave much and was rewarded with almost nothing when all was said and done.Most of the real heroes were supremely confident men – and women – who would not let bureaucracy stand in the way of their ideas on what must be done to increase production of the goods, commodities and services essential to defeating the Axis powers.Klein also paints vignettes of how little people did their very best to support the war effort. These human interest stories bring out the best of the Greatest Generation, but he does not shrink from showing their human side in wanting their share and in exploiting black markets to satisfy their own hunger and perceived needs.Klein’s description of the parallel development of the B-29 Super Fortress and the atomic bombs is riveting, and he comes down forcefully on the side of those who believe that using the bomb in combat saved tens of thousands of American lives.Above all, he gives Franklin Roosevelt credit for being the visionary leader needed to get the home front moving when isolationists fought him every step of the way to thwart these policies. Klein is unstinting in his praise for FDR for being the absolutely essential communicator to bring the concept of total war to the American people.My negatives are minuscule in comparison with the positives: the book is long and heavy and should have been issued in two volumes; the writing is well above pedestrian but does not shine as brightly as Klein’s scholarship; and finally there are more than a few instances of failed copy editing.If you really want to know how America won the war, this book is essential for your education and must be held handy for ready reference; what a book.

His poems will pull you back in time and have you remembering little moments you had long forgotten about. So many emotions are exposed in his words and I applaud him for opening up in such a way. With the help of a quietly beautiful bank officer, Helene Durren, with whom he is soon intimate, he receives the proceeds of the account, a paltry 336 francs. He discovers, however, that the original account held 114,000 francs, most of which has been withdrawn by its trustee, Frederich Von Egger, a distinguished aristocrat and a pillar of rectitude active in humanitarian causes. When Peter goes to Von Egger's palatial estate and confronts him with his questions, Von Egger not only convinces Peter of the morality of his transactions with the account, but tells him that he and Pietr Steinmuller nobly helped Jews funnel their wealth out of Nazi hands. Helene, however, suspects that, far from helping fleeing Jews, Von Egger and Pietr Steinmuller were fleecing them. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a well written historical and psychological thriller By joseph s. berman Bruce Ducker taps into a modern sleuth story with important historical ramifications (the question of Jewish assets "lost" during WWII) to write a compelling work of fiction. The book is more than just a detective story about hidden asssets. Ducker develops an interesting and complex protagonist whose amateur detective work leads him to learn more about his own family history. Although the plot itself is somewhat obvious, the characters are first rate, as are the scenes from Zurich and Budapest.

About the Author After several years of working in the public and private sector, doing everything from assembling Tonka Toy trucks (when they were made in America), working in a LP record distribution warehouse, serving in a variety of public governmental roles, managing a construction office, to becoming a social studies teacher at the age of forty-two, Rhonda is recently retired. Her passion for history, especially local and regional history, has resulted in the Minnesotas Lost Towns series which chronicles Minnesota used-to-be towns and communities. As she and her family (including the dog) travel the state, north, east, south and west, she is now working on the next books in the series. She is also presently working on a book detailing other regional points of interest.

These books never fail to please and the Azores book is no exception. We are going to the Azores in April and I feel very confident that this book will be as good as all of the others that I have used. The information is always accurate. In addition, there is an option to update your information before leaving on your trip by going to Sunflower's website. I love the small size of the books and appreciate not trying to carry a large travel book. Yet, I find all of the information that I need to navigate in a foreign country. I especially like the tidbits for places that are a bit off the beaten path. The information about the walks is always accurate with enough detail to keep us from getting lost. Sunflower books are definitely FIVE STAR!!

Over all, I was pretty bummed out by it. Every time we were CERTAIN it would contain the answers to our questions, it fell short. We bought it because we planned to rent a car and drive ourselves around. However, it is definitely written for people using buses or hiring drivers. In fact, in its introduction about "Getting around the island" it provides time tables for buses and tips on cultural expectations. Then a quick paragraph about renting a car, followed by details about what questions to ask for when hiring a driver. Its biggest shortcoming: Little to no advice on driving culture or what symbols on traffic signs meant. Second biggest shortcoming: Not even mentioning some of the larger sites to see. But I guess if they were expecting you to only function as the most superficial of tourists, that made sense. Overall, I wouldn't advise this book. Any info in it is more likely quite available once you arrive, from people who can provide way more detail.Oh, and if you're buying it for maps, definitely do not. The tourist center in Ponta Delgado provided excellent road maps for free that were significantly more useful and had MANY of the sites we wanted to see marked.Plus, we were shocked by how easy it was to navigate once we arrived. There were street signs pointing us to almost everything we wanted to see. They aren't psychic, just good planners!

Dubois As I started this book my first reaction was that I had happened upon the 2d or 3rd book in a series because there were terms used and circumstances described that the author appeared to assume the reader would understand. And i didn't. At first. So i had to pay attention and think about the world/worlds/universe that Paul McAuley had created and try to understand it - to pick up the jigsaw puzzle parts without a flat side and figure out where they went. Before long I was looking impatiently at the "% completed" number on my Kindle and picking up the pace, ignoring other obligations and sinking into McAuley's creation. His major characters were real people with strengths and weaknesses and frustrations and losses. I was interested in what would happen to them. The aliens defied easy description or categorization. Not BEMs, not ravening hordes of conquerors, but beings whose motivations, interests, and indeed physical form were all unclear. Sort of part police procedural, part space opera, and entirely a delight to read. The dialogue sounded like real people with a little interstellar Mike Hammer thrown in I would love to read further adventures of Chloe Millar and the ending would seem to predict that I will be able to. 5 stars for sure.

Schar As an initial matter, even though one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, this book has the worst cover of anything I've seen this year. If there were a Bulwer-Lytton award for book covers, "Something Coming Through" would be in top contention. I got a recommendation for this book and with some trepidation downloaded it, thinking it was a self-published novel based on the awful cover. So, my expectations were super low when I started.To my surprise and great pleasure, "Something Coming Through" ended up being a steadily-paced, suspenseful novel that was hard to put down. I won't repeat the plot summary above, other than to say the novel follows two sets of characters on two planets, who eventually come together William Gibson style. There's some police work, some aliens, some near-future speculation, and a McDonalds' drive-through on Mangala. McAuley has put together a universe unlike what we've seen before in SF, and hopefully we'll see some additional books in this setting.This is a relatively quick read. It's at least worth checking out from the library. I plan to seek out other books by the same author.

A story that raises many interesting points By Yzabel 3.5 to 4 stars.This novel, while predictable in parts (in a more traditional, “cop-oriented” way), raised some interesting points in terms of what to expect in a near-future, or a parallel present, shaped by the presence of aliens. Namely the mysterious Jackaroo, who showed up some thirteen years prior to the beginning of the story with shuttles and fifteen wormholes leading to just as many new worlds for humans to colonise. Worlds ertswhile inahbited by creatures long gone and forgotten, leaving only behind strange, “Elder Culture” artefacts. Meanwhile, Earth is falling prey to memes, ideas birthed into the mind of people who have been touched by some of those artefacts. And who knows how exactly the Jackaroo were responsible for this? Or their unscrutable associates, the !Cha, story-lovers who use plots to gather information used in turn to woo their mates?Intersting, because the Jackaroo never revealed their true purpose, and because their gift was definitely a double-edged sword. Sure, it allowed humanity to recover from ongoing problems (crime, pollution), but others developed in turn, and the fifteen worlds turned into mirrors of Earth, with McDonald’s and Starbuck joints popping up on Mangala and, no doubt, other places. Crime developed there just as it did on Earth, and a lot of things and events made it clear that humans basically did to these colonies what they had done to their motherworld—perhaps worse, even, due to the fact they hadn’t had to “work hard” to get to these new places, served on a silver platter. The “benevolent” Jackaroo, in other words, might just be trying to repeat an experiment they did with other planets and will do again, some kind of sick experiment to see what the “lesser” races would do when gifted with space travel they didn’t have to develop themselves.The name itself is also reminiscent of the Australian word “jackaroo” and its potential etmology: wandering people, watching over cattle. At least, this is how it felt to me, and what I believe the author wanted to achieve: making readers question the purpose behind the Jackaroo’s actions, all the while swathing them under layers of a thriller-and-chase plot mixed with a more typical seasoned-cop-and-rookie-partner murder investigation.The more typical parts, as I wrote above, were a little predictable, especially Vic’s, whose background is fairly unoriginal in that kind of story. However, I liked how they entwined after a while, and how you have to pay attention to the dates at the beginning of each chapter. This type of narrative can be frustrating, as you keep jumping from Chloe to Vic to Chloe to Vic again, and are left on semi-cliffhangers most of the time… but it’s a style I love, and so I wasn’t disappointed.On the downside, the characters weren’t that much developed. Vic is moulded on a fairly standard TV-show cop-type (divorced guy, been working for the force for years, somewhat jaded but still trying to make a difference…), Nevers and Harris are also somewhat predictable, and I would have liked to know more about Fahad and his family. Chloe’s background was definitely interesting, yet it also made her somewhat aloof and distanciated—something that stood to logics, considering what happened to her mother, only it made it harder to feel involved in her quest, as she was more carried by the plot than truly active at times. (In her defence, she wasn’t a dumb heroine, and was definitely aware of who was trying to manipulate her, and who intended to off her anyway once she wouldn’t be useful anymore.)Nevertheless, barring the somewhat weak characterisation, I found the world described here—drop here by drop there, with some info-dumping, but never too much to my liking—intriguing, and I wouldn’t mind knowing more about it in a sequel (or in a prequel).

Great book about using Twitter for business By Colin Sydes Just finished reading Nicky Kriel's "How To Twitter For Business Success" and have to say I loved it. Was so easy to read and had lots of great advice and ideas. I couldn't put it down and even read it on my mobile phone. I have been on Twitter for years and built up an account with over 177,000 followings so thought I knew everything about using Twitter. But Nicky made me rethink how I should use Twitter so I set up a new professional account and I will definitely use what I have learned from this excellent book.

This book is a memoir of a child who is swept into the whirlwind of the Holocaust. The epic history is narrowed down to the struggle of a single boy nicknamed Leosz to survive the war. From age 7 to age 13, he endures all the horrors that the Holocaust brings upon the Jewish people. Life hangs on split-second timing, decision-making in impossibly cruel circumstances, incredible resourcefulness, luck and the help of others, even Germans.

In the Krakow Ghetto, Leosz is saved from three mass deportations to the death camps. He escapes the ghetto, survives for several weeks pretending to be a

Polish street child, and then goes into hiding. Although sentenced to die after being caught, he is instead miraculously reunited with his family in the Plaszow labor camp. A year later, father and son become slave laborers in the Gozen 2 camp in Austria, where his father perishes. Close to death himself, Leosz is finally liberated by the American army on May 5th, 1945.

It was the genocide conducted by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Third Reich and particularly the SS who was in charge, before and during WWII in the 1930s and 1940s, when 6,000,000 Jewish men, women and children were exterminated. Not many Jewish people lived to tell about these atrocities. Here is the story of one brave boy who did survive. His entire family, parents, sisters, 16 aunts and uncles and 23 cousins, all murdered, and only he survived. It is a well documented, almost day by day accounting of his life during those bleak years when he was about to die at any given moment. We follow his story, written in the first person, as he lives his days, first as a boy from the upper middle class in Krakow, Poland, to the Ghetto, forced labor camps, concentration camps and at death's door, finally liberated by the American troops as WWII ended. I liked this book a lot and glad that I read it and glad the author stayed alive long enough to write it.

Blevins I Only Wanted to Live: The Struggle of a Boy to Survive the Holocaust is a memoir of the Holocaust in Poland by Arie Tamir. He was just a young boy of eleven when he entered the nightmare of the Holocaust. He and three cousins were the only ones of an extended family to survive. The book is one of the few written by children survivors and he is one of the very few to survive at or under the age of 12 from the camps.Arie was born to Wilhelm Wimisner and Eva Dorf. They had met in Vienna at the University. They talked German to each other and Polish to their children so children grew up knowing both which would be a godsend to Arie in the camps. Mother was born in Krakow and they lived there. Mother’s parents were Orthodox Jews; but Arie’s family was not. Mother ran the house and was socially active. They were wealthy so Mother had help at home. Zosia was the nanny and she became very close to the children and in the process of bringing them up, taught him about Jesus. Their Aunt Rosia, Mother’s sister, taught him about God and God’s love. Father was half owner of a wholesale textile business and was very good at his job. He traveled a lot and wasn’t home much. Even though he wasn’t there physically, he still had an influence on their upbringing. Although wealthy, Wilhelm and Eva made sure their children were not spoiled but well brought up and well disciplined. Good manners and good behavior were expected. His sister Gizia was three years older than he was and was born about 1930. Arie was born about 1933 and adored his sister. When she learned something, he learned it from her and later they were taught together. They were very close. Little sister Serenka was born when he was five (1938). At first, he was jealous of her for taking his place as the youngest; however, he soon came to love her dearly. The three of them played together and ventured out into the town with Zosia.Due to the gradually worsening conditions, they left Krakow and moved to Lwow and later Lublin and finally back to Krakow. Although Father no longer owned his business, he still ran it and was indispensable to the German owner. Their life didn’t change much at all. Eventually, even for them, things became worse and they moved into the Krakow Ghetto where unlike others, they had three small rooms to live in. Father’s connections with Germans paid off several times while in the Ghetto; but those gradually failed too. Meanwhile, Arie didn’t pay a lot of attention to the political situation and even at first in the Ghetto, he still played like the little boy he was. Gradually, he became very adept at going around the Ghetto and making friends as well as obtaining information. He joined a group of young boys who started smuggling food into the Ghetto. Arie was smarter than some and actually made money which he saved while in the Ghetto. When the final group of Jews from the Ghetto was taken to Plaszow Camp, he was not going to be allowed to go as he was 11, even though he had papers showing he was 14. His appearance just didn’t measure up. Instead of one or both of his parents staying behind with him, he stayed by himself and hid while the Ghetto was being cleared out. Several days after the last were taken, he managed to escape the Ghetto and began living in Krakow as a Polish boy. His learning about God and Jesus from Rosia and Zosia allowed him to pretend to be Catholic and get away with it. Eventually he went into hiding with the help of his cousin Gina. Eventually he was caught and sent to Plaszow to be executed. He was only grazed by the bullets and was taken into the camp where he was reunited with his family, including Gina who was also captured. Although still considered a child, he did not live in the Children’s Home but with his Father and he worked in several different places while there. When they came to take the children, he was included with them. He and a friend decided to escape on the way to the trucks and caused a breakout in which some children escaped, Arie among them. Later, he and his Father were taken to Mauthausen where his Father nearly died but they were able to bribe the kapos to get him taken off the detail for the quarry. They were taken to Gozen 2 where his father died, leaving Arie now 11 or 12 on his own and very sick. He has trouble remembering his Father’s death and his being sick. His Father died at the end of February, 1945 and Arie was liberated on May 5, 1945. He was taken to the American hospital and treated. Every time he had gotten sick, it seemed that someone stepped in to take care of him and not allow him to be killed.He went to Israel in December 1945 where still lives. He married and had two children who in turn gave him five grandchildren. He was reunited with his cousin Gina who died in Israel in 1994. He remains close to her three children. When he returned to Poland to trace his steps, he took her two daughters. On a second trip, he took his daughter and grandchildren and one of Gina’s daughters and her grandchildren. He caught up and finished his schooling in Israel and taught as well as worked for the Ministry of Defense in weapons research and development. He retired in 1990 and took it upon himself the task of managing and developing computerization of engineering firms as well as teaching.

This book is about a young child who tries to survive the war from the age of 7 to age 13. His life depends on making decisions in impossibly cruel circumstances, the kindness of strangers, his resourcefulness and yes, even luck and help of the Germans. He doesn't spend any time in the death camps but it was still an engaging book.

I believe it is peace for our time." (McDonough, 1998, 70). The man addressing the crowd, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, had just returned from the heart of Nazi Germany following negotiations with Adolf Hitler, and the crowd gathered outside the English leader's house on September 30, 1938 greeted these ringing words with grateful cheers. The piece of paper Chamberlain flourished exultantly seemed to offer permanent amity and goodwill between democratic Britain and totalitarian Germany. In it, Britain agreed to allow Hitler's Third Reich to absorb the Sudeten regions of Czechoslovakia without interference from either England or France, and since high percentages of ethnic Germans – often more than 50% locally – inhabited these regions, Hitler's demand for this territory seemed somewhat reasonable to Chamberlain and his supporters. With Germany resurgent and rearmed after the disasters inflicted on it by the Treaty of Versailles following World War I, the pact – known as the Munich Agreement – held out hope of a quick end to German ambitions and the return of stable, normal international relations across Europe. Of course, the Munich agreement is now notorious because its promise proved barren within a very short period of time. Chamberlain's actions either failed to avert or actually hastened the very cataclysm he wished to avoid at all costs. The "Munich Agreement" of 1938 effectively signed away Czechoslovakia's independence to Hitler's hungry new Third Reich, and within two years, most of the world found itself plunged into a conflict which made a charnelhouse of Europe and left somewhere between 60-80 million people dead globally. Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940. The resistance put up by these countries is often portrayed as weak, and the narrative is that the British stood alone in 1940 against the Nazi onslaught, defending the British Isles during the Battle of Britain and preventing a potential German invasion. In particular, the campaign in Poland is remembered as one in which an antiquated Polish army was quickly pummeled by the world’s most modern army. Polish lancers charging in a valiant yet idiotic attack against German tanks is the only image from the 1939 Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland remaining in the popular imagination today. Originating as a piece of Nazi propaganda, paradoxically adopted by the Poles as a patriotic myth, the fictional charge obscures the actual events of September 1939. Outnumbered, outgunned, and under-equipped, the Polish army nevertheless inflicted heavy losses on the invading Wehrmacht. In fact, only the unexpected advance of Soviet forces from the east put a quick end to the struggle.

They usually produce a very good account of the subject, with a good selection of sources and some photos, images or maps. I read one of their books on a subject I had read a lot about before, and being very satisfied with that one, I took it as a standard.Their books are not to be expected as complete, comprehensive works, but lean more toward a good overall short account. Choose one if the subject is new to you or you want a good overview. They appeal to me as good introductions, or if I have no intention of reading long works on a specific theme. That said, I like them and think they're very effective in providing good information as well as a good read.They have produced other books, including those listed below, that provide good information on earlier developments of the Nazi regime, and then on the final moves before the outbreak of war:1. (1923) The Beer Hall Putsch: The History and Legacy of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party's Failed Coup Attempt in 19232. This book seemed to me above the same editors' average, presenting a lot of unheard of information, although it draws a lot on some other titles like "The Munich Agreement of 1938" on the "appeasement" and other issues.I would highlight:- the background and preparations by Poland;- the description of the whole Poland invasion campaign and Polish resistance;- the information on historical myths about Polish defenders on horseback attacking tanks;- interesting assesments and analysis.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent account By Chris Gregory This is an excellent, well written, meticulously researched account of the manufacturing of a world war. This is what several world leaders wanted and they got it. It is unfortunate that there were duped back then - not unlike the naive dupes of today. Chamberlain promised peace in his campaign for the prime ministership and when he gave in to the Nazi he claimed peace for the world. What an self deluding buffoon. He reminds me of Obama and Kerry today with the misguided lunacy of the Iran deal.This writing also delivers the heart-wrenching travails of the Polish people as they were squeezed between Hitler and Stalin. How horrendous, how sad.This is a story that should be told in every junior high, high school, and college history class! I ask, are we repeating history because we neglected to teach it and learn it?
