Helpful, concise read from a real travel pro By Niall Doherty Full disclosure: Matt's a friend and he sent me a review copy of the book.Given that I've known Matt for years, perhaps I'm in a unique position here to vouch for the legitimacy of his story and travel advice. I've long been amazed by how he has been able to fly himself and his wife all around the world for ridiculously low prices, and in this book he reveals tons of great travel tips that will save the reader a good chunk of money and greatly enhance their vagabonding experiences.I'm pretty well traveled myself but there was plenty in the book for me to take note of. I especially liked the "flight roulette" idea and the tips and resources listed for getting visas and booking cheap flights and accommodation.The book is a quick read and devoid of any fluff. You can skim through it in less than an hour and come away with lots of value, but I recommend keeping it handy as a reference ahead of and during any big trip.

You are not going to be able to figure this one out, so just let the (mostly) congenial gang at the Questura (police department) handle the investigation and enjoy the gondola ride through Venice.If you're a regular reader of Donna Leon, you'll enjoy the banter between Guido and his wife, Paola, and between Guido and his colleagues. If you are new to these mysteries, you will no doubt find the pace slow and the mystery so subtle as to be nearly nonexistent. The pace is something that comes with the territory, which is of course, Venice, nicknamed La Serenissima, The Serene One. No car chases here.The drama in Falling in Love is provided by the opera Tosca, which features the center of our attention, Flavia Petrelli, a diva that Guido met in the very first mystery in the series, Death at La Fenice. Back for another encore (she appeared in at least one additional book), Flavia is feeling stalked by an anonymous fan who is leaving her too many flowers and giving her ostentatious gifts. Guido isn't too concerned until another singer that Flavia has recently met is assaulted and left for dead.The action picks up in the second act and as the music reaches a crescendo, there's a dramatic confrontation that threatens to mimic the opera's tragic ending. Not FALLING IN LOVE quite as much as I hoped By Corgi Lover I have been on a Donna Leon binge the past nine months and read all of her Guido Brunetti novels and been dazzled by the insights, the psychological detail, the complexity of characters and their actions and the native's view of Venice. FALLING IN LOVE is the first time I've been disappointed. The villain of this particular novel is not given the intelligence and creativity to pull off the things that are pulled off. In fact the villain is rather a dullard who doesn't understand things said or done to the villain. Anyway, I'm grateful to Ms. Leon for Detective Brunetti, his family and his co-workers and the rich world she made for them to inhabit.A pet peeve: In ALL of the novels at the beginning there is a quote from a libretto of a famous opera. Ms. Leon always credits the composer but never the actual librettist who wrote the words. A sad thing for a writer to do.

Wonderful Addition By Toni Osborne Book 24, in the Commissario Guido Brunetti MysteryThe mystery brings back Italian Soprano Flavia Petrelli to Venice to sing the lead role in Tosca. Fans of this series will remember we first met her in “Death at La Fenice”, and later when she reappeared in “Acqua Alta”. In this latest our Diva gets overwhelmed by the worship of an obsessive fan that trails her everywhere and inundates her with yellow roses and expensive gifts. Flavia gets very concerns for her safety when people around her are found injured and asks Guido Brunetti, a long-time friend, to get to the bottom of this mystery.I am a huge follower of this author so I knew “Falling in Love” would have a slow pace and be a crafty mystery without car chases or gruesome murders. It would also titillate us with a leisurely ride along the Venice canal with many descriptions of this seductive city great lagoons and luscious taste and smell. Ms. Leon has always made room in her books to make us savour all of the city’s charms and delicacies. A mystery would be boring without a good theme and some suspense, Ms. Leon has fictionalized events she read in the news or experienced in life and has sprung fascinating stories where the truth gets distorted for our enjoyment. Of course Guido with all his ingenuity and assisted by colleagues at their best track down the suspect and the culprit is found and all ends well.Once again this latest is a great read and a wonderful addition to a terrific series.My thanks to NetGalley and to Grove Atlantic for the opportunity to read this book

Seeing Israel Through Arab Eyes By Word Lover Second Person Singular by Sayed Kashua is one of the most fascinating books I have read about contemporary Israel, and the first, I must confess, from an Arab-Israeli perspective. From an anthropological point of view the novel deserves 5-stars simply for illuminating non-Israeli readers on the highly Westernized habits and attitudes of the Arab protagonists as they become upwardly mobile, from the cars they drive to the coffee they drink. An American reader gets an `it's-a-small-world-after-all' vibe reading the book's revealing, abundant detail.But there is much more to this novel, which addresses the question of identity, rendered especially difficult for Arabs in Israel. For the most part, the story chronicles two Tel Aviv Arabs who re-invent themselves through education, hard work and materialism--harshly separating themselves from their roots. One character is a naïve, kind-hearted social worker-turned-photographer, who literally steals the identiy of Yonaton Forschmidt, the young, talented Ashkenazi Jewish-Israeli paraplegic for whom he cares. The other, who is never named, is a successful but self-loathing and equally insecure criminal lawyer. Their plotlines run on parallel courses and intersect only at the book's conclusion.Perhaps the most interesting character of all, however, is the Jewish-Israeli who suffers a mysterious accident and is left in a vegetative state to be cared for by the young Arab who adopts his identify. I was puzzled by the statement the author was trying to make. Does Yonaton represent the state of Israel and if so, why is he is voiceless and powerless? Are we to believe that he is as self-loathing as the Arabs? Is Sayed Kashua, a celebrated Israeli novelist and creator of a popular sit-com, saying his country is also trying to reconcile what its founders intended it to be with what it has become? I would have given the book 5-stars were this point made clear, and I be eager to explore this question in a book club. I recommend this book to any reader eager to get insights into what it means to live in Israel today, especially if you are an Arab.

Elsner This novel provides a fascinating insight into the lives of Israel's Arab minority wrapped in a skillful reworking of Tolstoy's novella "The Kreutzer Sonata."In that story, a man falls prey to violent, uncontrollable and irrational jealousy and imagines his wife is having an affair with a violinist on the basis of no actual evidence. He hides his raging jealousy and goes on a trip, but returns early, finds the two together and kills his wife with a dagger. He is later acquitted of murder by the courts.Sayed Kasua makes the connection to the novella very clear. A wealthy and successful Arab lawyer who practices in Jerusalem seems to have it all -- he is accepted by Israeli society, drives a fancy car and has a pretty wife and two young kids. But we're quickly aware that not all is well in the marriage. He and his wife do not sleep together and their sex seems perfunctory. And the lawyer, whose name we never learn, seems obsessed with various status symbols, perpetually measuring his place in a society in which he never quite feels completely at home.One day, he buys a second-hand copy of the Tolstoy book and a piece of paper falls out of it in his wife's handwriting. He immediately jumps to the conclusion she is having an affair.We then meet a young Arab social worker who is looking after a paraplegic Jewish man called Yonatan. We learn his story and how in a strange way it intersects with the lives of the lawyer and his wife.This is skillfully done but what elevates this book is the unusual background. We learn about the relations between Arabs and Jews but also the different strati of Arab society -- the differences between those from the city and from villages, those from the Galilee and the area known as the Triangle -- the way Israeli Arabs disdain Palestinians from the West Bank, the treatment of those suspected of being collaborators with the Israelis. We learn about the inferiority complex some suffer from in relations with Jews, about the meaning of identity. We learn a lot about the concept of honor and the fragility of women's rights in this society.This isn't the perfect novel. The lawyer's total irrationality is hard to understand and has been forced on the author by his adaptation of Tolstoy's template. But the book's virtues overwhelm this flaw.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary Insight Into the "Palestian Problem" in Israel By Alan L. Chase Sayed Kashua has written a deeply moving and powerful novel. The center of the theme is Tolstoy's novella, "The Kreutzer Sonata." The music piece by the same name was composed by Beethoven. Tolstoy's piece examines the irrational jealousy of a husband who kills his wife in a fit of passion. Kashua has taken these dynamics and transplanted them to present day Jerusalem amid the background noise of the "Palestinian Question" in Israel.A successful Palestinian, a lawyer who is an Israeli citizen, buys a copy of Toltoy's novella, and in it finds a love note written in his wife's hand. Assuming that she is carrying on an elicit affair with Yonathan, whose name is in the used book, the lawyer becomes consumed with discovery the treason and punishing his wife. Yonathan is a poor Palestinian social worker from the humble Triangle region. He aspires to become a photographer, and changes his identity so that he can pass as Jewish. The identity he steals is that of a patient who hovers in a vegetative state after a failed suicide attempt.The story is told beautifully in counterpoint - going back and forth between the two Palestinian protagonists. It is at once a psychological thrill and a deep exploration of the sociological dynamics at work within present day Israel and even within the fractured Arab community. Kashua has a keen eye and ear for detail, so the dialogue captures fine nuances of conflict and attempts at communication.In the Epiloque, just when it appears that the lawyer's suspicions have been laid to rest, he stops by a photo exhibit, and the scab is pulled off the and doubts reappear. The reader is left hanging in suspense - much as Yonathan had hung suspended from his bedroom ceiling in his suicide attempt. It has the feel of a musical coda that ends with an unresolved dissonance. Very apt.Reading this book was a rich and enriching experience.

By FictionFan In Scotland, John Knox is thought of as a misogynistic, hellfire-and-damnation preaching, old killjoy, who is responsible for the fairly joyless version of Protestantism that has blighted our country for hundreds of years. Well, that's how I think of him anyway! Father of the Scottish Reformation, he is notorious for being the author of 'The First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women'. In this new biography, Jane Dawson sets out, not so much to overturn this impression of Knox, but to show that there was more to him than this. She tells us that new material has recently been uncovered amongst the papers of Christopher Goodman, a fellow Reformed preacher and long-term friend of Knox. This material, she suggests, throws a different light on his personality, while changing some of the facts known about his life.Dawson writes very well, with no unnecessary academic jargon, making the book an enjoyable read. In structure, it's a straightforward biography following a linear timeline. Not having read any previous biographies of Knox, I'm not in a position to comment on whether the new material makes a significant difference to what was already known about him, but I certainly found that I learned a good deal, not just about Knox, but about the history of the Reformation in Scotland, England and Europe.Starting with his childhood, Dawson takes us through Knox's early career as a priest within the Catholic Church and, as she does at all points, sets his story well within the context of the period. She discusses the importance of the Church in medieval society and gives the reader an overview of the political situation in Scotland and England at the time of the 'Rough Wooing', when Henry VIII was using military might to try to force a marriage between his son and the infant queen of Scotland. The legend, of course, is that the Scots and English were sworn enemies, but Dawson shows how those Scots who were moving towards Protestantism, including Knox, were in fact keen for an alliance with England, perhaps even a union. Therefore when France pitched in to keep Scotland Catholic, Knox found himself on the wrong side, and began an exile that would take him first to England and later to Geneva, becoming heavily involved in the development of Reformed religion in both locations.Dawson suggests that these experiences influenced Knox deeply. He had been a disciple of George Wishart, martyred for his beliefs under Mary of Guise, Regent of Scotland, and on more than one occasion came close to achieving martyrdom himself. His hatred of Mary Tudor's bloody persecution of English Protestants led him to expect the same in Scotland when the young Mary Stuart came to her throne. (I have to admit that if I'd had to deal with the three Marys, I might have become a misogynist myself.) It was around this time that Knox blew his First Blast, basing his case on the authority of the Old Testament, to declare that women were not fit to be rulers and should be opposed, even deposed if necessary. He had been warned by Calvin not to do this but, as always, Knox's belief in his own unarguable rightness led him to disregard this advice.Big mistake as it turned out, since Mary Tudor's death brought Protestant Elizabeth to the throne. Thinking that he could now return to England to continue developing the Reformed Church there, Knox discovered to his surprise that for some odd reason Elizabeth had taken offence over the First Blast. It would have been a bit hard at that point for Knox to explain that it was only Catholic women who weren't suited to rule, but anyway Dawson didn't convince me that Knox's First Blast was more political than misogynistic. Dawson suggests that the fact that he had many staunch female friends and supporters throughout his life, and loved both his wives, in some way refutes the accusation of misogyny. I tend to disagree - many people like cats but they don't necessarily consider them equals. Perhaps it's a semantic debate - perhaps he should be described as a sexist old killjoy instead.Having blown his chances in England, Knox answered the call to return to Scotland, where he became embroiled in the Wars of the Congregation. For a brief period after this, he was able to set the Scottish Church up to run along the Reformed lines he had been planning for years, and he believed that by accepting this the Scottish people had made a covenant with God. But he soon became disillusioned when many prominent Protestants upheld Mary's right to rule and even to attend Catholic Mass. During the long years of ups and downs that followed, he never ceased to preach and prophesy, and never changed his core beliefs regardless of pressure and threats, which I suppose makes him admirable if not particularly likeable. In his later years, he suffered from repeated bouts of depression, believing that the covenant had been broken and that retribution would surely follow. Not against him, obviously - just his (and therefore God's) enemies. He saw himself as God's Watchman, constantly striving to prevent deviation from the forms of worship he believed the Bible specified, thumping his pulpit and prophesying doom on all who strayed.My superficial overview doesn't do full justice to Dawson's book. She sheds a great deal of light on this complex and important figure, showing in depth how his interpretation of the Bible influenced every aspect of his life. She also widens the subject out to put the Scottish Reformation into context with the Protestant movement throughout Europe, showing how, despite some internal differences, there was an attempt to unify the theology and forms of worship of the fledgling religion. And she goes on to show how local circumstances led to variations in the practices of Reformed churches in different nations. Though I knew most of the historical 'facts' already, I certainly have a better understanding of the man, and of the Church he was so instrumental in creating. And while I can't say I like him much better than I did, I at least accept that he acted always in conformance with his beliefs. An excellent biography and history combined - highly recommended.NB This book was provided for review by the publisher, Yale University Press.

By KW A very interesting biography of John Knox which draws heavily on new recently discovered sources including the Goodman papers. Knox is presented as a complex character: his many different connections and relations (public and private, national and international, ecclesiastical, political, personal) are explored in such a way that you really feel you have come to know him somewhat better than the flat unidimensional caricature found in many history books.One small irritant is the author's writing style. She uses the words "probably" or "possibly" some 250 times in a book with some 384 pages. I'm not a historian (I write "a", not "an" deliberately), so I don't know if this is the currently acceptable way of writing history. Perhaps it is fashionable to cultivate an air of uncertainty and avoid stating facts or drawing conclusions. I do know that I find it irritating.You probably will too. Possibly.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Murder, She Roared By Author Bill Peschel It's been years since I've seen Stanley Hastings, the P.I. who does the best he can with what he has. I had read a couple of Parnell Hall's books in the 1990s and loved them. "Suspense" and "Scam" were traditional murder mysteries enlivened by the presence of a detective who was clearly fighting above his weight and unsure of anything. The fact that he knew this, yet still doggedly pursued the truth made it easy to root for him. How can you not have hope for a man who says, "There's a lot of stuff I don't understand. I was born not understanding."So when I was offered the 19th Hastings book, "Safari," I thought it was time to get back in touch."Safari" is set in Zambia and Zimbabwe, far from Stanley's native Manhattan. Stanley and his short-suffering acerbic wife, Alice, have spent an inheritance on a low-budget wildlife tour that promised close encounters with lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes and other tourists. Their trip into the bush is interrupted when a guide is found with a dented skull under a tree bearing heavy sausage fruit. It looks like an accident from a combination of sausage fruit and gravity, and the safari moves on. But Stanley suspects murder. He's correct, of course, but not until another body or two is found, and the possibility grows that one of the tourists was responsible.After about 20 years absence, I still find Stanley funny. He still stumbles through a case, still determined to find the truth. He's also older, which gets him into trouble with Alice when he encounters a nubile member of the group. When she tells him, "you're funny," he thinks, "I wanted to die. I didn't want to be funny. Not to a girl like that. To a girl like that, funny was a pejorative to a guy like me. Funny was what you called your old uncle Wally, the one who never married."I don't recall Philip Marlowe having that problem.The other major comic motif is Alice's disdain for her husband's brains. In the early books, she pops up from time to time to add a bit of pepper to the plot. As part of the party, her derision is so constant that you'd wish Stanley would go find a sausage fruit tree.Dorothy L. Sayers described her novel "Busman's Honeymoon" as "a love story with detective interruptions." Change "love story" to "photographing animals eating each other," and that's "Safari." Don't worry about trying to solve the mystery; Stanley wraps it up in the last two chapters. Treat the book like a real safari, and take pleasure in the journey, not the destination.

Great, but needs a better proof-reader/fact-checker By Brooke Chilvers As a member of Africa's safari industry, I could not help but read a book named SAFARI, and it's the perfect book to read on the plane to Africa. Could have used a better proof-reader/fact-checker. It's TEVA shoes, not TIVA. There are absolutely no indigenous deer species in Africa (European deer have been introduced to some reserves and game farms in South Africa), so any reference to deer should clearly be a joke to the reader and not come off like a mistake in knowledge. And: Shame, shame, shame on you, Parnell Hall - especially if you have been on safari: There are absolutely NO "water buffalo" in Africa. There is only the African buffalo, more correctly referred to as Cape buffalo, among safari buffs - Syncerus caffer. Next time you write about Africa, please contact me and I'll be glad to be your proof-reader.

Roberts It is always nice to see a long running series change its location and a trip to Africa provides an interesting setting for the mystery. Parnell Hall always includes humor in his books and there were many times I laughed out loud. This is a fun, lighthearted read. The suspects are the fellow travelers on the safari and the staff so the book could be described as an outdoor locked room mystery. I could not put it down for the last third as I wanted to know who did it.I got this at the library based on some of the other reviews. Now that I have read the book I am sorry I waited to read it and did not buy it when it first came out. The review that blasted Alice, Stanley's wife, was already out before I read the book so I looked for the reviewer's points as I read. Most of the negative things attributed to Alice were actually things that Stanley mentally supposed she would say, not things that were ever uttered out loud by Alice. It is Alice's encouragement of her spouse that prompts Stanley to solve it in the end. There are really very few negative remarks by Alice in this book.I read the review that talked about misogynistic comments after I read the book. I think the reviewer stated that she did not finish the book. I wish she had read the whole book because the things she alluded to related to character descriptions at the beginning of the book. The two older women end up being the only ones who are able to correctly do the only physical activity that required lessons in the book.I hope that people will read this book and decide for themselves. If you are a fan of this series then you will like this book. Good mystery in a unusual setting. If I ever go on safari, then I will spring for the more deluxe safari based on the description of the cheap safari they went on.

In May 1942, the United States' first naval victory against the Japanese in the Coral Sea was marred by the loss of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Another carrier was nearly ready for launch when the news arrived, so the navy changed her name to Lexington, confusing the Japanese.

The men of the original "Lady Lex" loved their ship and fought hard to protect her. They were also seeking revenge for the losses sustained at Pearl Harbor. Crippling attacks by the Japanese left her on fire and dead in the water. A remarkable 90 percent of the crew made it off the burning decks before Lexington had to be abandoned. In all the annals of the Second World War, there is hardly a battle story more compelling.

Lexington's legacy did not end with her demise, however. Although the battle was deemed a tactical success for the Japanese, it turned out to be a strategic loss: For the first time in the war, a Japanese invasion force was forced to retreat.

About the Author

Phil Keith is a historian, ex-navy pilot, and the author of Stay the Rising Sun (Zenith Press, 2015), Blackhorse Riders, and Fire Base Illingworth. He is a Harvard graduate and served in the Vietnam War with distinction as a naval aviator. After the war, Keith went on to work for two Fortune 500 companies and became the CEO of three technology companies.

Today, Keith spends his time writing as a columnist, a magazine feature writer, and an author. He also teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Keith lives in Southampton, New York.

This body of work and scholarship includes well-researched literature from authorities on the subject including, but not limited to: Walter Lord, Samuel Eliot Morison, Dan van der Vat, John Toland, and Ronald H. Spector, and most recently, Ian W. Toll and James D. Hornfischer. While these eminent historians have contributed solid research through well-respected, lauded narrative, this assembled literature has lacked in-depth history of the officers and men and their heroism aboard the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea. To the aforementioned list we should include historian and former U.S. Navy officer Phil Keith, for his work in Stay the Rising Sun: The True Story of USS Lexington, Her Valiant Crew, and Changing the Course of WWII.Keith’s theory and assertion that the Battle of the Coral Sea, and not the naval Battle of Midway or land battle on Guadalcanal, was the turning point in the War against Japan. Keith’s premise is not without merit, or allies; he has other historians on his side. Naval historian Dan van der Vat, in The Pacific Campaign: The U.S.-Japanese Naval War 1941-1945, writes: “Coral Sea was a tactical defeat for the Americans, because as the weaker side they lost more men, ships, and aircraft. But it was a strategic defeat for the Japanese, who felt obliged, for the first time since they had opened their Southern front, to halt a major advance and to change their plans.” van der Vat adds: “… the victors [Japan] behaved as if they had been beaten, and therefore they were beaten.” Finally: “There is thus a powerful case for arguing that the Coral Sea, not the much bigger and more dramatic clash exactly four weeks later at Midway, was the real turning point of the Pacific Campaign.”Operation “MO,” the Imperial Japanese Navy’s plan to take Port Moresby and ultimately Australia, was reversed as a result of heroism from the officers and men aboard the USS Lexington and USS Yorktown at Coral Sea. Numerous Medals of Honor and Navy Crosses were awarded to U.S. Navy personnel (ship-duty personnel and pilots) assigned to the USS Lexington during the war’s first battle between aircraft carriers. Japanese aircraft carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku exorbitant loss of aircraft and crews at Coral Sea preempted those ships from participating in the subsequent Battle of Midway, thus tilting the intelligence-benefitted epic further in favor of the U.S. Navy. Having written about World War II's Pacific Theater, specifically the U.S. Navy's campaign in the war against Japan, I thought I had a fairly good grasp on the U.S. ships and the American seamen who sailed them. Boy, was I wrong. Phil Keith, a master storyteller, digs deep here, and makes this history of "The Lady Lex" jump off the page with gusto and style. "Stay ..." is an engrossing narrative with a pounding pulse and a beating heart. I could not put it down.

We are given a history of the beginnings of our great fleets that make port of calls through the world. We can honor one of the great ships in U.S. Naval history. The beginnings of Naval Avation was hard fought by a group of forward thinking men. They had to fight the "Big Gun" faction on a daily basis, in the end and through trial and tribulation, they designed the modern navy.The Lady Lex was beloved by her crew, a wall in the Pacific Ocean in the dark days early in the Pacific war. Lexington (CV 2) fought valiantly, her men brave against all odds. Her Captain was a great seaman and leader and her crew reflected that leadership. The men of today's aircraft carriers owe the men of Lexington a great deal. As do we all

The information is scholarly but reads easily and is hard to put down. If a novelist tried to write this story, it would be too fantastic to have credibility. Such is the story of Sicily. A fascinating read, Dummett peels back the layers to give an understanding of how Sicily has arrived where it is today. Any visit to Sicily requires constant changing of historical hats - from Greek to Arab to Norman to Spanish, it is all there and Dummett's book helps you get it straight in your mind both for posterity and for your visit.

A Great PM Instructor Writes A Great PM Book By Amazon Customer Doug Rose is one of, if not the best, Project Management instructors I've had the privilege of learning from. With that in mind, it's no small feat that he's been able to successfully incorporate his engaging and thorough teaching methods into a work on Agile. In my experience, Agile and its related terms get thrown around a lot without sufficient consideration of their meaning, but Doug lays out the origin of the terms/concepts and what makes them so valuable.The book is very accessible: included tips, side notes, and illustrations, rather than being gimmicky, successfully reinforce the lessons of each chapter. It's also a very practical book: instead of laying out a Platonic PM ideal, it calls out areas where one might have difficulty implementing Agile concepts, such as meeting organization and inter-team communication. Highly recommended.

The “Why Should You Read This Book” section states some of the book’s goals shownng from a team’s perspective how to in a practical manner, implement and align agile to your organization. It meets these objectives using an easy to read style. The first half of the book explains what agile is and how it interfaces with organizations and the later how to implement and continually improve agile methodologies. For me the most important part of this book is that it addresses the “change management aspect” of adopting agile, from interfacing with development managers and PMOs to re-positioning (up) the classical PM position so that it adds true value. For whatever reason I was not able to download the support materials from the website.

In true AGILE spirit, the workbook-like format is ideal for serious study or as a handy reference. I have had Doug Rose as an AGILE teacher and this book captures his wonderful ability to demystify AGILE. He is able to clearly explain what is flexible about AGILE and what is not. In my workplace, we have not gone "full blown" AGILE, but try to use some of the primary techniques and methods to improve project delivery. I found the chapter on "Working Like an AGILE Team" most helpful in this regard. This book skillfully addresses a wide range of practices from how to introduce AGILE into an organization, to how to run AGILE teams all given by one of the premier coaches out there.AGILE is fast growing in popularity far beyond software development. If you are considering AGILE, or trying to make your current team better, this book is, without a doubt, the place to start.

Loftus I am tempted to call this a beautiful book in the same way that I feel the movie of "The Loved One," a very black-humored farce about funerals and death, is beautiful: It masterfully accomplishes what it sets out to do.In rich, imaginative prose, Homes tells a compelling tale with all the fascination of a fatal car wreck and a cobra preparing to strike. If you found Nabokov's _Lolita_ disturbing, if you couldn't stomach Ellis's skillful but satirical and cold _American Psycho_, stay away from this book. It has both the warmth and tenderness of the former, and the in-your-face graphicness of the latter (probably even more in-your-face because of the warmth and tenderness). People have referred to the pedophilia, masturbation, and murder; don't forget homosexual prison sex and rape ... and how do you feel about saving scabs in a drawer for chewing and sucking on later?Some of the other Amazon reviews here have been utterly hilarious: Homes should include them in splash pages of subsequent editions. There are the usual encomia and expressions of disgust, but "Billy Graham could just as well have written this"? uhum37 also complains that "every character remains profoundly moral" -- another judgment I cannot understand for the life of me, but I will nevertheless respond that the characters are telling their own stories (the 19-year-old's is additionally filtered through the sensibility of the narrator, for the most part -- and of course they are apt to regard themselves as moral.Reviewers also ask the wrong questions. "Does this story need to be told?" one reader queried on 6/4/97. Of course not. No story "needs" to be told, whether it's Alice In Wonderland or Waiting for Godot. The real question is, does a story compel attention, does it make you think and feel (not necessarily think and feel lovely thoughts!), and does it play fair and maintain a certain plausibility even given its fantastic premises? "sevitt" in Israel wonders whether the narrator's reported flashbacks were true. It doesn't make any difference! He is telling the stories; they present either what he wants to think about himself or what he wants the listener to believe (and the listener is NOT the person who reads the book _The End of Alice_, remember, but a 19-year-old female correspondent who wants to seduce 12-year-old boys).This is an amazing book. I look forward to reading Homes's other work, past and future.

Homes when it was first published, but just thinking about it still gives me the shivers. It's a scary book, mostly because it forces the reader's mind to think in a sick and grotesque way.The narrator is a 54-year old pervert who serving time in Sing Sing for the rape and murder of a 12-year old girl. He has served 23 years already when he receives a letter from a 19-year old girl who is planning to seduce a 12-year old boy. A correspondence follows which forces the pedophile's memory to reveal the most shocking and lurid details of his crimes.This was easily one of the most disgusting books I ever read. The act of reading it made me nauseous, but yet I applaud the author for her courage to write it and do recommend it to the few brave souls who are willing to experience its horrific roller coaster ride.But be forewarned: the disgust and revulsion last long after the book is finished, and its essence is impossible to forget.

Fascinating, frustrating and disappointing but unforgettable By Zimbeline I initially wrote this review on June 19th, 2000 and changed the viewing to private. The memory of the book has lingered, so I decided to again make public my review and update."Having always been most intrigued by the shadowy side of the human psyche, I was initially fascinated with the twisted, dark tale unfolding. At times, it was difficult to follow, but the human mind is a complex thing. The 19-year-old's descent into depravity was worth the price of the book. Which, upon finishing the novel, makes me glad I bought it [discounted].... Because by the end, that is about all the book is worth. As an avid collector of books, I will not be saving this one for my library. The final fourth of the book was so very disappointing. I was not shocked, nor repulsed by the final revelations, I was far too annoyed with the story by that point. For all that the book was built up to be, by reviewers and by the initial reading of the first 200 pages, it suddenly spiraled out of control, crashed and burned. A discordant finish with jangling ends to such a rich, darkly disturbing composition. Nabakov, it is not. It stands on it's own, good or bad." This book does have the ability to take you to the darker places of the soul and leave an indelible mark there. Evil is a very human quality, not relegated to the isolate domain of demons and bogeymen.Frederich Nietzsche said: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.And when you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you.""The End of Alice" is a look into the abyss.Few books have that lasting effect on the psyche like this one.You'll either love it or hate it, but you might never forget it.KM 06/12/2005
