Beautifully put together, enjoyable and quickly informative. Perfection. The bookstore closed so I went home and downloaded it for Kindle. The kindle version butchers the flow and joy of reading this book. Half the pages are blank, the outstanding photography and book design is only partially shown... It's like they started transposing the format and accidentally pressed "publish" 3 minutes after they began. Technically the content is there but drop your kindle and drive to the store. This is a beautiful book that needs to be read in the hard copy format. What a huge disappointment. I'm crying in my soul.

By Amazon Customer This was my first Lonely Planet book, and I thought it was super helpful during my week long Tokyo trip. The Guides by Lonely Planet phone app was released while I was almost done with the trip, and I was able to use it for a couple days and can say that it's a good companion to the book. The app has the restaurants and points of interest on a map so it's easier to navigate. I still liked the book though because it had a lot of helpful background information for each neighborhood.

The information, especially the short cuts such as page 52-53 "Neighborhoods at a Glance" really allowed me to optimize my 9 day trip. Also the map that is included is perfect--better than a street map I bought. We like to walk a lot and I kept the map in my pocket. The map also includes the subway lines and was as clear as it could be. We had zero issues or confusion on the subway. The book also suggests walking tours you can take on your own. Wonderful.

A broad picture of the Holocaust from the point of view of a child

This book is a memoir of a child who is swept into the whirlwind of the Holocaust. The epic history is narrowed down to the struggle of a single boy nicknamed Leosz to survive the war. From age 7 to age 13, he endures all the horrors that the Holocaust brings upon the Jewish people. Life hangs on split-second timing, decision-making in impossibly cruel circumstances, incredible resourcefulness, luck and the help of others, even Germans.

In the Krakow Ghetto, Leosz is saved from three mass deportations to the death camps. He escapes the ghetto, survives for several weeks pretending to be a

Polish street child, and then goes into hiding. Although sentenced to die after being caught, he is instead miraculously reunited with his family in the Plaszow labor camp. A year later, father and son become slave laborers in the Gozen 2 camp in Austria, where his father perishes. Close to death himself, Leosz is finally liberated by the American army on May 5th, 1945.

It was the genocide conducted by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Third Reich and particularly the SS who was in charge, before and during WWII in the 1930s and 1940s, when 6,000,000 Jewish men, women and children were exterminated. Not many Jewish people lived to tell about these atrocities. Here is the story of one brave boy who did survive. His entire family, parents, sisters, 16 aunts and uncles and 23 cousins, all murdered, and only he survived. It is a well documented, almost day by day accounting of his life during those bleak years when he was about to die at any given moment. We follow his story, written in the first person, as he lives his days, first as a boy from the upper middle class in Krakow, Poland, to the Ghetto, forced labor camps, concentration camps and at death's door, finally liberated by the American troops as WWII ended. I liked this book a lot and glad that I read it and glad the author stayed alive long enough to write it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A must read for Holocaust educators By P. Blevins I Only Wanted to Live: The Struggle of a Boy to Survive the Holocaust is a memoir of the Holocaust in Poland by Arie Tamir. He was just a young boy of eleven when he entered the nightmare of the Holocaust. He and three cousins were the only ones of an extended family to survive. The book is one of the few written by children survivors and he is one of the very few to survive at or under the age of 12 from the camps.Arie was born to Wilhelm Wimisner and Eva Dorf. They had met in Vienna at the University. They talked German to each other and Polish to their children so children grew up knowing both which would be a godsend to Arie in the camps. Mother was born in Krakow and they lived there. Mother’s parents were Orthodox Jews; but Arie’s family was not. Mother ran the house and was socially active. They were wealthy so Mother had help at home. Zosia was the nanny and she became very close to the children and in the process of bringing them up, taught him about Jesus. Their Aunt Rosia, Mother’s sister, taught him about God and God’s love. Father was half owner of a wholesale textile business and was very good at his job. He traveled a lot and wasn’t home much. Even though he wasn’t there physically, he still had an influence on their upbringing. Although wealthy, Wilhelm and Eva made sure their children were not spoiled but well brought up and well disciplined. Good manners and good behavior were expected. His sister Gizia was three years older than he was and was born about 1930. Arie was born about 1933 and adored his sister. When she learned something, he learned it from her and later they were taught together. They were very close. Little sister Serenka was born when he was five (1938). At first, he was jealous of her for taking his place as the youngest; however, he soon came to love her dearly. The three of them played together and ventured out into the town with Zosia.Due to the gradually worsening conditions, they left Krakow and moved to Lwow and later Lublin and finally back to Krakow. Although Father no longer owned his business, he still ran it and was indispensable to the German owner. Their life didn’t change much at all. Eventually, even for them, things became worse and they moved into the Krakow Ghetto where unlike others, they had three small rooms to live in. Father’s connections with Germans paid off several times while in the Ghetto; but those gradually failed too. Meanwhile, Arie didn’t pay a lot of attention to the political situation and even at first in the Ghetto, he still played like the little boy he was. Gradually, he became very adept at going around the Ghetto and making friends as well as obtaining information. He joined a group of young boys who started smuggling food into the Ghetto. Arie was smarter than some and actually made money which he saved while in the Ghetto. When the final group of Jews from the Ghetto was taken to Plaszow Camp, he was not going to be allowed to go as he was 11, even though he had papers showing he was 14. His appearance just didn’t measure up. Instead of one or both of his parents staying behind with him, he stayed by himself and hid while the Ghetto was being cleared out. Several days after the last were taken, he managed to escape the Ghetto and began living in Krakow as a Polish boy. His learning about God and Jesus from Rosia and Zosia allowed him to pretend to be Catholic and get away with it. Eventually he went into hiding with the help of his cousin Gina. Eventually he was caught and sent to Plaszow to be executed. He was only grazed by the bullets and was taken into the camp where he was reunited with his family, including Gina who was also captured. Although still considered a child, he did not live in the Children’s Home but with his Father and he worked in several different places while there. When they came to take the children, he was included with them. He and a friend decided to escape on the way to the trucks and caused a breakout in which some children escaped, Arie among them. Later, he and his Father were taken to Mauthausen where his Father nearly died but they were able to bribe the kapos to get him taken off the detail for the quarry. They were taken to Gozen 2 where his father died, leaving Arie now 11 or 12 on his own and very sick. He has trouble remembering his Father’s death and his being sick. His Father died at the end of February, 1945 and Arie was liberated on May 5, 1945. He was taken to the American hospital and treated. Every time he had gotten sick, it seemed that someone stepped in to take care of him and not allow him to be killed. He went to Israel in December 1945 where still lives. He married and had two children who in turn gave him five grandchildren. He was reunited with his cousin Gina who died in Israel in 1994. He remains close to her three children. When he returned to Poland to trace his steps, he took her two daughters. On a second trip, he took his daughter and grandchildren and one of Gina’s daughters and her grandchildren. He caught up and finished his schooling in Israel and taught as well as worked for the Ministry of Defense in weapons research and development. He retired in 1990 and took it upon himself the task of managing and developing computerization of engineering firms as well as teaching.

This book is about a young child who tries to survive the war from the age of 7 to age 13. His life depends on making decisions in impossibly cruel circumstances, the kindness of strangers, his resourcefulness and yes, even luck and help of the Germans. He doesn't spend any time in the death camps but it was still an engaging book.

Table of Contents: Affiliate Marketing: What Is It? Affiliate Marketing Tips Affiliate Tracking Software: How It Can Help You The Most Cost-Effective Way To Advertise Your Business Affiliate Assets 8 Surefire Strategies That Generates Over $100,000 Per Annum Affiliate Clickbank Make-Money-Program Affiliate Criteria: 3 Things To Examine Before Signing Up Affiliate marketing is a great way to make an extra income. Once you have everything all set up and ready to go, you can start making an income from your efforts. Affiliate marketing is when somebody else pays you a commission or a percentage of what you sell for them. For instance, a coffee business might pay you 10% on all sales that you make for them. This is how it works: When a business decides that they would like to have some help selling their product or service, they will then start an affiliate program. When they do this, they are enabling others to sign up and sell their products or a particular service that they are offering. The ones that sign up to the affiliate program have several ways that they can market the service or the product that we will get into later on. Nevertheless, the company that needs the help selling the product, will then give all of their affiliates a exclusive ID number that they can use in their links, and so that the company can see who the sale came from when a sale is made of an affiliate. There are many distinctive kinds of affiliate marketing programs. There are those that offer one time commissions off of a sale. A number of them may offer lifetime commissions, and others might pay just for leads that you can get them. Whether it is for a newsletter lead, or something else. Just having interested parties sign up for things for more info is another one. The kind of affiliate program that you choose to have is completely up to the person that is the owner of the business. They can decide the percentage, or flat rate that they are willing to pay for a sale or a lead. Then those interested can sign up and help them make sales and get leads for a certain amount of money. Those signing up for affiliate marketing, and distinctive programs to sell for others, can do this many ways. They can promote the services or the products on a website that is relevant to the affiliate programs that they are a part of. Or they can also promote them on a blog. Both of these are great ways to get traffic to your affiliate programs and make sales from them. Some even use email and newsletter marketing as a way to get sales for others as well. Which ever technique and way that you decide to use is up to you. Once you have chosen the affiliate programs that you are wanting to market, you will then have to be sure to read all of the rules and stipulations for that program. Because all of them will be distinctive. Some might not want their name used in the URL of your website, and some may also not want the particular product or service that you are selling for them used in the title tags for the page, or anywhere else on the page. Because of all of the distinctive requirements and stipulations that you need to read, you might even need some software to help you sort it all out and decide which one is the greatest for you and your affiliate marketing business. Choosing the affiliate marketing programs that you want to go with is not hard to do at all. Choose some thing that you know about, and that you could be referred to as an expert about. The more passionate you are about the service or product, the better, as it will shine through. Once you have all of your programs in place, check out SEO, and find out how to get your website up on the initial page of the search engines. This is going to take hard work and determination, but you can do it.

In this stunning debut novel, Rebecca Walker turns her attention to the power of love and the limitations of the human heart. When Farida, a sophisticated college student, falls in love with Adé, a young Swahili man living on an idyllic island off the coast of Kenya, the two plan to marry and envision a simple life together―free of worldly possessions and concerns. But when Farida contracts malaria and finds herself caught in the middle of a civil war, reality crashes in around them. The lovers’ solitude is interrupted by a world in the throes of massive upheaval that threatens to tear them apart, along with all they cherish.

Haunting, exquisite, and certain to become a classic, Adé will stay with you long after you put it down. This is a timeless love story set perfectly, heartbreakingly, in our time.

Adé: A Love Story, by Rebecca Walker

From Booklist In a fiction debut that is as much a novel of self-discovery and identity as a lucent love story, memoirist Walker brings her background and literary strengths to bear. When the 19-year-old unnamed narrator and her Yale friend, Miriam, start their long travels, arriving in Africa becomes life-changing. In Egypt, the narrator feels she belongs for the first time, with her copper-colored skin and brown, almond-shaped eyes. Then in Lamu, an island off the coast of Kenya, she falls in love with handsome Swahili Muslim Adé, who gives her the Arabic name Farida. As Miriam resumes traveling alone, Farida and Adé live together simply and make plans to marry. But Swahili custom requires face-to-face meetings to ask for parental approval, and political realities strike previously entitled American Farida for the first time. Walker knows whereof she writes. Farida, like the author (daughter of novelist Alice Walker and lawyer Mel Levanthal), is black, white, and Jewish and a child of divorce, and Walker uses this knowledge to good effect here. A brief, sensuous love story grounded in painful reality. --Michele Leber

Review "Read this book! An incredible journey! A beautiful LOVE story!" —Madonna

"Memoirist Walker makes her fiction debut with a short, sad tale of love that flowers but cannot take root in Kenya. The prose is gorgeous." —Kirkus Reviews“Vivid… [Adé] will not soon be forgotten.” —New York Journal of Books“[Adé] reads like a memoir, and its prose is as concentrated and image filled as a parable. Readers will relish the dreamlike story of love and surrender.”—Library Journal“A fiction debut that is as much a novel of self-discovery and identity as a lucent love story.” —Booklist“Walker’s prose aches with longing, and a knowingness… [Adé] feels as though it’s told in the weighty quiet of a late night conversation.” —STETnyc.com

“I want to say Adé reads like a memoir, but this heartbreaking, poetic tale of romance versus reality does more than that: it reads like truth. Lush, sensual, seductive, Adé is written with as much love as the story it tells.” —MAT JOHNSON, author of Pym “In luminous, dreamlike prose, Rebecca Walker has written more than a love story: Adé explores the difficulty of fleeing one’s origins, of relinquishing privilege, even in the name of love.” —DANZY SENNA, author of You Are Free and Caucasia “Brief and intense, Adé is a surprise gem–a sensuous feast of food, sex, danger, and the life of awakened senses from one of our most celebrated nonfiction writers. A lyrical novel as timeless as Marguerite Duras’s The Lover.” —MOLLY PEACOCK, author of The Paper Garden: An Artist Begins Her Life’s Work at 72

“If you’ve ever dared to love outside the predictable geography of your origins, or wished you had, this beautiful novel will grab your heart and not let go.” —BLISS BROYARD, author of One Drop: My Father’s Hidden Life–A Story of Race and Family Secrets

Story is underdeveloped By L I am a fan of Rebecca Walker's previous work, having loved Baby Love and Black, White & Jewish, however Ade missed the mark as her fiction debut. Reading the first few chapters was troublesome and besides the poor sentence structure (I blame the editor), I tried to put a finger on what else was bothering me. As one reviewer stated, "this story reads like a book that was written for Kindle," complete with underdeveloped characters and an oddly paced story line. I too was disappointed that it did not have a new main character. I did not expect the book to have so much autobiographical content. It almost seems like a book that was written hurriedly, without the proper attention required. Though short, I did not bother finishing it. Buy it on Kindle if you are curious, but it is not worth the price charged for the print version. This will not be a favorite of anyone who reads avidly.

By missmickee/bookreview The narrator, a 19 year old first generation Ivy League freshman at Yale University, had a close relationship with both her divorced parents, her mother Christian and father Jewish. When she meets her 21 year old free spirited feminist friend Miriam in a film studies class, they became fast friends. As they experienced the excitement of the college party scene, they decide to travel together to Africa, taking a year or so off from their course of study. With approval and extra funds provided by her parents, they began their travel adventure.Landing in Cairo Egypt she and Miriam traveled south, feeling the land deeply familiar. They soon were dehydrated from the heat and saw a doctor. As they learned to keep time by muezzins call to prayer, they could feel the silent intense observations and stares of the women hidden in the hajab covering of muslim dress. The men mostly wore white shirts and skullcaps. Taking a fast dip in the Nile River, they traveled seeing the vastness of the Arabian Sea and the desolation of the Sinai desert, and Mount Sinai, where Moses received the 10 Commandments. In the desert they marveled at how their tour guides navigated around without landmarks, maps, or a compass. Miriam was annoyed at the tourists overall and the disrespect of Muslim men towards women. They traveled by ferry to "Lamu" the island of sand and stone, in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Kenya. Here, our narrator meets Ade`, a handsome young highly respected Swahili man, who worked very hard, visited his mother in the evenings at Ramadan, and gave her all his money to support their large family. His mother, was one of his father's five wives, who all lived away together on another island. Ade' gave the narrator the Arabic name "Farida", (translation: jewel/exceptional, like no other) when they fell deeply in love and before they decided to marry. His family was disapproving and shocked preferring he marry a Swahili woman. They grew to accept her, teaching her how women lived by observing traditional ways and practices. Miriam, very disappointed, left Farida to travel on, cautioning that most men only wanted a woman from the west only to pay their way into Europe or the U.S. This, wasn't the case with Ade' and Farida, they both decided to remain in Lamu, and live according to Muslim custom; which would in time alter their life/love by unforeseen circumstances. This is one of the most bittersweet breath taking stories about timeless love I have read recently. It was hard to understand how a sophisticated college educated feminist could consider marriage to a devout Muslim from another culture. "Ade: A Love Story" fosters understanding and acceptance of this choice. This is Walkers fictional debut, she is also an award winning journalist, blogger, lecturer. Walker's book: "Baby Love" (2008) was well received. She is the daughter of acclaimed author Alice Walker.

Not impressed By Amazon Customer I have been a fan of Rebecca for a while, but I am wholly disappointed by this book.First, I hesitate to call it a novel because it is so short. More like a novella. Then, for anyone who has read her memoir, you will see that half of the book is borrowed from her real life. Ugh.I know that writers infuse themselves into their characters but this is a whole new level. I was hoping for creativity. Something new and refreshing from her, but I was sadly let down. The book is an extension of her memoir with a standard love story woven through. By the time you start caring about this couple, she's quickly ending the story. She's lucky she had the connections to get this published.Very disappointed.

Would you like to spend more quality time with the people you love? Are you interested in traveling and making new friends around the world? Would you like to experience real financial freedom and time freedom? The RESIDUAL Effect is a book about what it really takes to develop a thriving network marketing business and enjoy a life-style that most only dream about. Too often, people underestimate the power of this business vehicle because of what they've heard or what they assume they know about it. What most people do not know, is that with the emerging global economy and the dynamics of the information/communication age, business opportunities abound! The burgeoning network marketing industry is about to reach a global tipping point. Don't miss out! Consider the alternatives. College graduates with business and marketing degrees finish their education up to their ears in debt. Many have trouble finding even a moderate five-figure income job or career. If this is you, how long will it take to get a return on your education investment -- five years, ten years, or more? What if you're fifty something and you've just been downsized or laid off. What's next? Do you have a plan B or just more of the same? No matter what your stage in life, this proven business model can work for you. What if you could get started with a $1000 investment and ten hours per week of your valuable time for the next twenty-four months and enjoy recurring annual six-figure RESIDUAL profits, year after year after year? Would you be interested learning more? What if it took you five or even ten years rather than forty to develop monthly recurring income that is ten times more than the average social security check? Did you know that you can even keep your full-time day job, while you developing a part-time fortune in this industry? Now that's a savvy plan B and exit strategy! This book explains what it really takes to build a thriving business and long-term residual profits in the emerging 200 billion dollar direct sales industry. The RESIDUAL Effect teaches you how to identify companies that offer a real opportunity and a solid business development system. This book lays it on the line, there's no hype or fluff. The RESIDUAL Effect is a book about Mark's twenty-five years of real industry experience, living, demonstrating, teaching, and profiting from these "residual" principles, both in the field and inside corporate. Mark explains network marketing in eight actionable steps. These steps include the success philosophies and attitudes you must embrace and the practices, principles, and mechanics that are necessary to run your business day after day. Too often, network marketing is promoted or misunderstood as a “get rich quick" business, but the truth is, the financial benefits are just the tip of the iceberg. The RESIDUAL Effect has a profound ripple effect in every area of your life. Take this business seriously and experience exponential personal growth and enrich the lives of hundreds and potentially thousands of people! The RESIDUAL Effect is an eight part training that Mark has shared with thousands of people over the last twenty years. This acronym represents a progression of the eight R.E.S.I.D.U.A.L. principles, necessary for developing a profitable business. • Relationships • Education • Service • Investment • Develop your Market • Unlimited Potential • Action Plan • Leadership Network marketing is a business of personal relationships and leadership development, the first and the last principles in this acronym. Whether you're new to the business or a seasoned professional, The RESIDUAL Effect is a valuable resource that offers an accurate perspective of the network marketing industry and an organized system for success. The RESIDUAL Effect will help you build lasting relationships, develop leaders, and grow a thriving network, and the life-style of your dreams.

A rare eyewitness account by an important author of fleeing the Nazis’ march on Paris in 1940, featuring a never-before-published introduction by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.   In June of 1940, Leon Werth and his wife fled Paris before the advancing Nazis Army. 33 Days is his eyewitness account of that experience, one of the largest civilian dispacements in history. Encouraged to write 33 Days by his dear friend, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of The Little Prince, Werth finished the manuscript while in hiding in the Jura mountains.   Saint-Exupéry smuggled the manuscript out of Nazi-occupied France, wrote an introduction to the work and arranged for its publication in the United States by Brentanos. But the publication never came to pass, and Werth’s manuscript would disappear for more than fifty years until the first French edition, in 1992. It has since become required reading in French schools.   This, the first-ever English language translation of 33 Days, includes Saint-Exupéry’s original introduction for the book, long thought to be lost. It is presented it here for the first time in any language. After more than seventy years, 33 Days appears—complete and as it was fully intended.

Review “The riveting 33 Days, now in its first English translation, proves that the author was no mere footnote."—New York Magazine“[Werth is] a sharp-eyed witness to the chaotic exodus… The reunion was worth waiting for.”—The Atlantic“A searing chronicle of France’s 1940 exodus...A publishing event in its own right; and almost certainly the best eye witness account of l’Exode."—Nick Lezard, The Guardian (UK)“Genius... Lyrical yet brutally descriptive... The real suspense here is in the tension between the absolutely trivial and the absolutely terrible—a tension powerful enough to sustain the entirety of this important memoir."—Jewish Book Council“33 Days, admirably translated by Austin Denis Johnston, is a beautifully written portrait not just of the shock of sudden occupation, but an eloquent essay on the meaning of how to remain human, even in the face of such confusing adversity."—Times Literary Supplement (UK)“Riveting...masterful... Werth’s short book – fast-paced, engaging and philosophical all at once – offers an astonishingly honest and perceptive expression of life under occupation."—PopMatters, 9 out of 10 stars“With its gentle prose, the narrator’s constant questioning and occasional humour, 33 Days is a valuable record of the those fleeing Paris and a subtle yet fierce inquiry as to what it means to be occupied."—3:AM Magazine“With nothing to steady oneself in this moment of complete upheaval, at least the reader has Werth’s intellectual honesty, precision of observation, and sensitivity to particularity… This is the skill of a writer...that can, in unusual circumstances, turn an author into a necessary interpreter of an increasingly unfathomable world."—Cleaver“Extraordinary... An invaluable document of history as well as a riveting literary narrative."—Kirkus Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Leaving Paris, Fleeing the Nazis By Rob Hardy You may have been puzzled by the dedication at the beginning of _The Little Prince_, wherein Antoine de Saint-Exupéry apologizes to children for dedicating the book to a grownup. He explains that the grownup to whom he dedicates the book is “his best friend in the world,” and that “he lives in France where he is hungry and cold.” He ends the dedication, and avoids the association with grownups by closing with, “To Léon Werth, when he was a little boy.” I knew nothing more about Léon Werth until I read his book _33 Days_ (Melville House Publishing), translated and edited by Austin Denis Johnson. The memoir explains why he was in France and hungry and cold: it was the beginning of the occupation of France and he was fleeing the Germans. The account here covers his days after leaving Paris in a slow trek with his wife southward to the free zone. He was thus taking part in what is known as “_l’Exode_” or “The Exodus,” about which I, too, was ignorant even though it involved something like eight million people, the largest mass migration in human history. Werth’s is one of the few eyewitness accounts, and is harrowing and funny by turns; he is an expert observer, and far too intelligent a writer to descend into propaganda. We almost never saw this book. Werth entrusted it to Saint-Exupéry to smuggle out of France. Werth, being Jewish, could publish nothing on his own. Saint-Exupéry was headed to New York to encourage American intervention in the war, and he found a publisher, but the manuscript was inexplicably lost, to be found only in 1992. This is the first English language translation and the first in which the introduction and text are together. Werth’s account starts its 33 days on 10 June 1940, in Paris, where no one knows what is going on, but the Germans are coming (Paris was to surrender four days later). He and his wife head south, but the traffic becomes a rout. Their car joins a caravan of other cars, backed up for miles. He hears for the first time the words, “France is betrayed.” The trek becomes a slow-motion nightmare. Cars fail and are cast to the side of the road. Some get to be pulled by oxen. Horses pull wagons until they are exhausted and die. The biggest shock he has to undergo is to see some of his fellow Frenchmen accept the intrusion of the Germans, and even that Germans are more welcome to the region’s inhabitants than fleeing Frenchmen. “We are evidently not in France. We are not exactly in Germany either. We’re in a country we didn’t know existed: a France that has come to terms with the German victory, or rejoices in it, a France that feels no connection to French customs or French character.”Finally, they reach the free zone. At the time he was writing, he could not know that he was in for a war of isolation, cold, hunger, and deprivation. He was to condemn Vichy France and become a Gaullist during the Nazi occupation, but that destiny is not contained here. The words toward the end of the book thus are written in glee but are sad: “We’re now driving in the free zone. We never imagined we could be so taken by such a word. Free, we’re free… We can go where we like, forward, backward, right as easily as left… It makes us giddy.” Full of gentle, questioning, mocking prose, this is a unique account of an important historical event and an investigation of the initial meaning of the occupation. Werth was to survive the war, but to reflect that peace without his great friend Saint-Exupéry cannot truly be peace. “Where are you?” he asks in the text, and compares his own way of writing to that of his friend, “I don’t even know if you’re alive. I dream sometimes that your airplane had been hit, that it crashed in a catastrophe of scrap metal and fire. I drag myself along in my old metier. I recount the lowly; I tell, in the immensity of this war, the stories of insects.” No; this is the story of people learning what war is.

Down to the personal level of someone who fled the Germans as they advanced into France, it made me feel almost as if I were there with them. It left me wanting to read his later, more extensive book on their life in the area they fled to, but it is only in French! Can't find it in English anywhere.

‘The Fortress’ is a dramatic and gripping work of history. It describes the century-long struggle (from 1825 – 1917) of the great Russian revolutionaries to overthrow the monarchy. Their punishment was to be thrown into the Peter and Paul Fortress in Leningrad, then the most dreaded of Russian prisons and a symbol of Tsarist cruelty, where they were tortured and sometimes beaten to death, or left to rot in the silence of their cells. Who were these revolutionaries? They included such figures as Pushkin, the aristocratic Decembrists (who attempted a coup d'etat against the Tsar as early as 1825), Dostoyevsky (who was forced to suffer a mock execution after joining the Petrashevsky group), Bakunin (the great anarchist), Nechayev (the terrorist youth who became the hero of ‘The Possessed’), Zhelyabov (who engineered the assassination of Alexander II), Sazonov (who masterminded the murder of the brutal Minister of the Interior, Plehve), and Kaliayev (the poet who killed the Grand Duke Sergey. They were idealists, they were ruthless terrorists but Payne also shows their human qualities. They come alive in graphic detail, as do the terrible horrors of torture and being left to go mad in prison. Vivid, fast-paced ‘The Fortress’ is the powerful story of these Russian revolutionaries who fought for a greater freedom and unwittingly opened the way for a greater tyranny – the Bolshevik Revolution. ‘an absorbing account of Lenin’s predecessors … in Mr. Payne’s skilful hands these young idealists come alive in all their pathetic grandeur, while the tales of their intrigues and repeated self-sacrifice make fascinating reading’ – New York Times Book Review ‘Mr. Payne … again displays his gift as a chronicler of the past in terms of personality, drama and contemporary detail’- Book-of-the-Month-Club News "Mr. Payne is a literary phenomenon of astounding industry and versatility." The New York Times Robert Payne (1911-1983) had over a hundred books published on a wide range of subjects during his lifetime. Critics raved about ‘his vast erudition,’ ‘his magic power over words,’ and that rare ability ‘to capture the spiritual essence of his subject.’ The Russian series, in particular ‘The Life and Death of Lenin’ and ‘The Rise and Fall of Stalin’, raised his reputation as biographer to enormous stature. Interesting Portraits of Russian Revolutionaries By Michael Lapelosa The author paints excellent portraits of Russian revolutionaries BEFORE the Bolshevicks. These individuals do not share a common philosophy or methodology. The author unites them thru 2 techniques; the desire to overthrow the Tsar and imprisonment in the brutal Peter and Paul Fortress. The author describes in vivid detail the brutality of the Tsarist regimes and the inprisonment of the inmates, where they were tortured and sometimes beaten to death, or left to rot in the silence of their cells. The revolutionaries were a VERY diverse lot, including Pushkin, the aristocratic Decembrists, Dostyevsky, and Bakunin. The author brings these individuals alive in graphic detail, as do the terrible horrors of torture and being left to go mad in prison. However, I didn't feel that the author provided enough context, background and perspective to fully inform and enlighten the reader. The motivation was lacking....The Decemberists were young aristocrats....why did they feel the need to overthrow the Tsar by violent means. Had peaceful alternatives bveen tried and failed? Bakunin was an anarchist. was ANY government good enough for him? Did ANY Tsar try ANY reform? ETC. I didnt feel these points were examined in enough detail to provide adequate balance.

This book chronicles the horror and human suffering of two of the most terrible years in London's long and vivid history. 1665 brought the plague and cries of "Bring Out Your Dead" echoed the city. A year later, the already decimated capital was reduced to ashes in four days by the fire that began in Pudding Lane. James Leasor weaves in the first-hand accounts of Daniel Defoe and Samuel Pepys, among many others. New York Times 'Could hardly be a more timely parable for our day' Evening Standard 'An engrossing and vivid impression of those terrible days' Sunday Express 'Absorbing. . .an excellent account of the two most fantastic years in London's history'

Abridgment of original edition By Librarian [RATING 3.5 STARS] Soon after this book first came out as a rack-sized Hearst/Avon paperback (copyrighted 1961 by James Leasor), I bought a copy (for $.60), read it, and was enthralled by it--so much so that it led me to eventually read Daniel Defoe's faux "Journal of the Plague Year" and the real diaries of John Evelyn and Samuel Pepys. The textual content of this 2011 ebook is NOT, I'm sad to say, identical to the earlier one. Many of the engrossing details which had once made this book so appealing are now missing. A comparison of the sample to my paperback edition confirms that this ebook has been abridged by eliminating many illustrative details, peripheral information and descriptions, and by shortening and combining paragraphs and chapters. For example, one such merger takes place regarding (1) household human waste management and (2) dietary practices, hitherto two totally separate discussions (and rightfully so), but now shortened and jarringly linked with a semi-colon (but no transition) within the very same sentence! This does not exemplify the superb writing style the book once had.The original was a well-written, tightly-organized, dramatic account; it was informative and detailed but never tedious; it was as enjoyable to read as a novel; and it served as a great introduction to both the period and the two tragic events it so vividly depicted. It truly made the reader feel as if he or she were there. To the extent that any of these positive qualities remain, they do so to a significantly lesser degree. Moreover, in the process of streamlining the text to become faster-paced and (presumably) more appealing to today's reader, the book has lost much of its original charm. (And this ebook edition is certainly not made any more desirable by having an inactive TOC.)I cannot be as enthusiastic as others would SEEM to be about this new edition. I say "seem" because two of the 5-star reviews for this title were written PRIOR to 2011 and do NOT, therefore, pertain to this abridged, 2011 ebook edition but to the earlier, unabridged version--the same one I prefer. And since the brief newspaper raves (in the Kindle Store descriptive blurb) are undated, one suspects they, too, were written about the original (unabridged) edition.Having expressed my keen disappointment, I must nevertheless admit I did somewhat enjoy what I read in the downloaded, lengthy sample of the present version, but obviously not nearly as much as the equivalent portion in the original. I will, therefore, retain my old paperback and NOT purchase this new ebook to replace it. However, those without access to the earlier version might wish to consider purchasing and reading this ebook edition, since even an abridged version of "The Plague and the Fire" is still better than none at all. It is not 5-star great as it once was, but that was then and this is now; the present version still seems to be good enough to rate a solid 3.5 stars, and it deserves to be read for what it now is and appreciated for the information and insights it currently imparts. (Nevertheless, if you are somehow able to acquire an unabridged, earlier version of it, I'd recommend you read that one instead.)

It's well-researched, with the author weaving together contemporary accounts from figures such as Daniel Defoe and the diarist Samual Pepys, as well as testimony from a host of others. Leasor rarely inserts his own voice, preferring for others to speak. This technique lends an air of reality to what may be one of the most horrific two years suffered by any major city in history.

London in 1665/6 comes to life in these pages By mm This account of the plague and the great fire of London was a much easier and far more gripping read than I had expected. The author has cleverly put together accounts written at the time, in such a way as to transport you back into the period and carry the reader along with the current of the events as they played out. Often history is overly romanticized but here you know the descriptions were genuinely reported and recorded, giving not only details of events but insights into human behavior and the politics of the times. For me the sights sounds and smells of old London came to life of the pages of this book.

Japan remains an intriguing enigma to many. It’s an economic and industrial powerhouse. Yet just below the surface of the frenetic pace and western gloss, it’s a unique Asian culture, one that is centuries old and has deeply engrained traditions. Many of the values and basic assumptions the Japanese make about life have their origins in Buddhism and Shintoism. The primacy of the group or the collective good and the value placed on maintaining harmony are particularly strong and cherished. So pervasive are these values that they’re expressed in practically every aspect of Japanese life, including a complex social hierarchy that often dictates social and business interactions. Understanding Japanese business culture can be challenging, even for the Japanese. Traditionally, Japanese companies have tended to be very patriarchal. This was especially true of larger corporations. Lifetime employment and loyalty were characteristic of the old Japan. There’s no doubt that Japan is changing. It’s evident in the evolving attitudes of today’s salarymen, modern Japanese women, as well as in the younger generation, all questioning the society’s traditional values and beliefs, socially, politically, and economically. Despite the changes, some traditions remain. Building relationships, developing trust, and respect for age and protocol remain constant. bWise Japan is a fascinating exploration of this traditional and complex culture. bWise Japan is part of Atma Global’s bWise – Business Wisdom Worldwide – series. A great guide to Japanese business culture By Brielle Kennedy Working for a tech company, we have a lot of ties in Japan, therefore I must travel there often for business. Before my first trip, my colleague recommended this eBook to me. I knew that understanding the intricacies of Japanese Business culture would be a challenge, but I had no idea about the specific traditions I needed to be mindful of. Building trust with associates in Japan and being sure to show the proper signs of respect were incredibly important to me, however, understanding why I might be expected to do certain things was important to me as well. This book starts out in a very helpful way. I thought it might just jump into the business stuff, but there is a great deal of insight about Japanese Geography, different historical periods dating back thousands of years, as well as the government structure. These things gave me an unexpected look into the formation of current Japanese culture. This book also discusses many important pages about thee economy and different industries. I found the industry and manufacutring section especially interesting. It then goes on to discuss the basic values and social customs, as well as gender roles in Japan. As a woman, learning about the roles surrounding women and how they are seen in the workplace was both important and very interesting to me.After delving into information about Japanese culture as a whole, I felt prepared to learn more about business and corporate culture. The next sections go incredibly in depth into anything that you might need to know; from how to meet people for the first time, attitudes toward work, making contacts, and how to conduct businesses discussions to information about following up, gift giving, and body language, this e-book covers it all. I had a lot of questions when I began reading, and I found that this book answered all of them.If you're looking for a guide to understanding Japanese culture and business culture, this book is great. It isn't too long, so you can take in a lot of information in a short period of time. I thought the depth of discussion for each topic was perfect.

They frequently send me to our sister company in Japan for different aspects of our business, which sometimes includes making sales or marketing over in Japan. Honestly, the only thing I really knew about Japan was that they are constantly getting attacked by Godzilla. Joking of course, but in reality I didn't a ton about the culture or the way they do business. In America, commerce is centered around our way of life. The same can easily be said about Japan or any other country for that matter. With this is mind I needed to find a way to establish business principles and relations in this country. Thankfully, this book was able to help me with every aspect of this. I was able to consistently build various business relations without having to sacrifice a lot of money on a business course for Japan. I loved this book and it helped me exponentially.
