It has info on literally everything you need to know, including accommodation recommendations, how to get there, how to travel once you get there, and most importantly, things you need to do before you go, like applying for visas, buying your Eurorail pass, etc,, reservations for attractions, etc.About 4-6 weeks before your trip, buy the Rick Steves guide for the specific country you plan to visit. My husband and I travel a lot, and Rick Steves' guides are my Bibles!

Gives so much valuable advice from what to pack (or better yet--what NOT to pack) to eating and staying overnights at local places. Tips on using cash vs plastic as well as where to make monetary conversions. Expectations on use of facilities --not the same as in America; expect some pay toilets in public places. This is a purchase you won't regret if you are traveling thru Europe!

Our modern day, multimedia, information-obsessed culture has fundamentally altered much of what we do day-to-day. The way we shop and pay bills. The way we communicate. The way we research, study, and learn. In the realm of travel we have more tools than ever telling us where to go, how to get there, what it will look like, what to do, and why we should go in the first place. This proliferation of constantly updated data has changed the way we go about our journeys. But how?By tracing the evolution of the guidebook from pilgrim manuals and Baedeker’s books to Yelp reviews and Google Maps, David Bockino explores the effects this information growth has had on the state of travel and adventure. Inspired by some of the world’s greatest explorers, he sets out guidebook-less to a destination he knows little about, launching an experiment to determine just how the guidebook and its digital descendants have transformed the nature of travel. The Guidebook Experiment is a call-to-action to conduct our own guidebook experiments, to disconnect from the ceaseless barrage of information in modern life and explore an unknown neighborhood or unfamiliar country and discover the joy of travel on our own.

Review "Bockino empowers the reader to go skinny dipping in the unknown—I dare you to read it and stay put."—Peter Wortsman, author of Ghost Dance in Berlin and Cold Earth Wanderers

About the Author David Bockino is a faculty member in the School of Communications at Elon University in Elon, NC. He was born and raised in New York and currently lives in Durham, NC with his wife and son.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Day 6 — Georgetown, Guyana: It’s karaoke night at the Sleep-In International, an irritating (and unavoidable) epilogue to the events of the past few hours. After my visit to the police station, I had used one of the hotel’s calling cards to call my wife. I said I had been defeated – I had no money, no credit cards, no idea where to go for help — and was ready to abandon the experiment. But she convinced me to stay, to march on through this methodological hiccup, and so here I am, in my hotel room, penniless, listening to the grating melodies of 1980s American pop ballads.* * *The purpose of my trip to the Guianas, a journey I had ceremoniously designated the “guidebook experiment,” had been to determine how the recent proliferation of guidebook-related material – how the explosion of travel blogs and restaurant reviews and backpacking message boards and digital mapping applications on top of the already vast library of print-related guides to nearly every city, region, and country on the planet — had changed the way we see the world. That was how I ended up trapped one night in a hotel in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, with a black eye and barely a dollar to my name, listening to middle-aged men serenade their female companions with the unmistakable passion of forlorn American rock ’n’ roll musicians. My presence in that hotel at that very moment seemed to embody, in all its pathetic glory, the results of my experiment. But I must back up; no proper experiment begins with its findings. Most, instead, begin with an introduction – an explanation of the experiment’s purpose, a justification of its design, and a description of its participants. And so before I explain how I endured and eventually escaped my karaoke purgatory, I must first explain how I ended up there in the first place. That particular story begins not in Guyana but in Montana, on the trail of two of the most famous guidebook-less travelers of all time. It was there that the guidebook experiment was launched.

By David Bell I am a big traveler, and can't ever go anywhere without a lonely planet (bought on Amazon, obviously) and days spent on tripadvisor and other sites. So, when Amazon recommended this book for me, it looked perfect. And it ended up even better than expected. All of the history is really interesting, the overarching story is great, and I agree with everything the author has to say on the use of guidebooks. He interweaves each line of narrative perfectly, which keeps the pages turning. I couldn't recommend this book more to anyone who enjoys travel (or even if you don't), whether it is with guidebooks or not.

It was an entertaining and informative clash of adventure and history. I'd be willing to be that most of us that have used a guidebook have never bothered to think about the origin and evolution of the genre. This book will make you think about it in a whole new way.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves to travel, especially for those of us who like to think about how travel fits into and has changed our culture. The writing is intelligent and engaging, making the book readable and informative. A great buy for your next trip, especially if it features a long plane flight!

This is more for people who are into raising money and that work in certain companies i didn't care for this book because i am not into this sort of thing but its nice for people who are looking for ideas and help and this is the book for them.I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review

By confessmomof5 I am a professional blogger, and I always get emails of companies reaching out to help promote their business through companies such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo and other crowdfunding sites. However, I didn't know much about these sites until I received this book. The Crowdsourcing book is more of a quick start guide to all types of various crowdsourcing type websites. Crowdsourcing it not something new; it was first know back all the way in 1885 (it was a way for the US to fund the Statue of Liberty!)In today's modern age the internet is a quick way to share your idea with millions of people and reach them quickly. There are two different types of crowding; crowdsourcing is ultimately for a business that you're not sure if it's going to be received well, while crowdfunding is asking your audience to help fund something. Example used in the book is an artist created a crowdfunding page to help promotional, recording and touring costs. This guide is a must read for anyone who's looking to start a business and needs some help and advice on what service and types of funding options they want to receive. This is perfect to keep as reference BEFORE you launch your next big idea. Overall, this is not a book I would read on regular basis but it's packed with lots of helpful information for those who are looking to start their own business and getting "backed" by regular consumers across the world.**I received this book at a discounted price for my honest, and unbiased review.**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Crowdsourcing at its best. By Nicole Grube As someone who doesn't really have any reason to use crowdsourcing, this was surprisingly an enjoyable read. It taught me more than just how to raise funds for companies and programs. It teaches you the in's and out's of the individual ways to raise the funds you may need. This book teaches you how these companies started and how they came to be as big as they are. It is also very well written and immediately draws you in. I was already aware of Kickstarter but this showed me so many other companies that are essentially similar to your needs in raising money for your company or program of interest. I was thoroughly pleased with how this book explained everything! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about crowdsourcing or using it themselves. This will explain everything you want to know. I received this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. This opinion is 100% my own.

The air war over Europe during World War II proved that combat in the sky can be even more devastating than combat on the ground. When the war ended, every major city in Germany was virtually destroyed. A German writer admitted that his own nation, in taking up the sword to conquer the world, had "summoned up those bands of furies which raced across the German skies." Here, from the acclaimed historian Stephen W. Sears, is the story of Europe's air war.

The battles over Schweinfurt, Regensberg, and Ploesti are detailed for their horrific losses. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the P-51 that long range fighter protection became available. Germany paid a horrible price, but so did the USAAF and the Royal Air Force to obtain air superiority.

Verifies a little know fact that more 8th Air Force airmen lost their lives in combat than all marines killed in the Pacific war zone. I felt some animosity toward the German fighter pilot Ace describing his "kills" since my brother was a B-24 crew member in some of the air battles.

Townie takes place in Oldon, Massachusetts, a burgeoning New England village that has become the favored residence of the mega-rich, a town whose historic past has been preserved and polished until it gleams with the arrogant intensity of a Colonial theme park.   Alan Lowe inhabits a different Oldon, however, a town that he loved as a boy for the “power and rightness of its countryside.” Now, in early middle age, he finds himself living on the margins of the changing town, in a camp deep within Oldon Woods, “inelegantly sheltered by a stale, army-surplus sheet, perforated here and there with pinholes and rudely draped into the equivalent of a teepee.”   Then Alan’s seemingly rootless life converges with that of Arthur Worthy, a member of the recently-arrived elite, whose life “bristles with appointments, trips, activities, possessions, responsibilities, and business urgencies.” But Arthur lives on the margin, too, as alone and isolated in his mansion as Alan is in his teepee.   They share, as they discover, an unexpected connection, a woman named Anna, “who must be understood as a catalytic force in both of our lives, the intoxicating girl who devolved into the equable woman whose existence served to define our own.”   Alan abandons his camp in order to temporarily look after Arthur’s mansion and their lives soon become deeply intertwined in an adventure that is ostensibly a business deal but is, more essentially, a search for love and connection with place.  Townie is a picaresque novel of the countryside, funny and skewering about our social and business pretensions, moving and true about our need for roots and authenticity.

Townie: A Novel, by John Butman

From Publishers Weekly Butman builds his inventive first novel around the art of the deal, pushing it in a dreamy, semiromantic direction. A rich resident of a tony New England village, Arthur Worthy, takes in the homeless narrator, Alan Lowe, christens him "Theo" and makes him his butler. Lowe, a former designer who is slumming his way through a shabby poverty charade, plays along with Worthy's game when the businessman asks him to come to London and perform a pivotal, trumped-up role in a high-stakes business meeting. The game takes an amusing turn when Worthy's erstwhile business partner shows up on their flight and gets himself arrested, allowing Lowe to meet one of the men he must fool. Despite the long odds, the deal goes smoothly until a series of bad judgments eliminates Worthy and his colleague from the final closing, leaving their fate in the hands of a phony indigent with no business experience. Butman's whimsical approach makes the odd conceit work, and he smartly steers clear of Lowe's midlife bitterness as he takes his plot through its strange twists and turns. The romantic subplot involving Anna, Worthy's ex-wife (who also turns out to be Lowe's childhood crush), is a dead end, but Butman introduces another entertaining subplot when Worthy beds a married woman just before he hits the road. Butman is a gifted writer with an excellent feel for his offbeat characters, but what makes this debut work is his ability to approach just about any situation as an arcane comedy of manners. What life really is, or should be, from two ends of a money spectrum By Mary McGreevey John Butman's debut novel of a small New England upperclass town caught my attention, because I live in San Francisco, amidst enormous gaps in wealth, especially obvious when I go to Marin County's little towns full of self-conscious suburbanites. The story of a local man, about 50, who's "failed" in life by giving up a video career to drop out completely, is more engaging that a first glance would show."Theo" (his butler name)takes to the woods living in a tent, scrounging food off the tourists' leftovers in local small restaurants, turning up at the clothing donation drives to help himself to whole bags of the locals' castoffs...somehow this interested me, because the life in our city is so full of these contrasts. I, too, like to see what the wealthy around here are casting out in consignment shops, including their books and nicknacks.Ostensibly the senselessness of things, and his loss of girl in his theater group, Anna, who snubbed him when he was ten years old, hangs like a giant sore on his spirit. He can't get over the loss, although he met other women in his life.In fact, I found this book at such a shop in the Mission, as a proofreader's copy.John Butman as an author likes to go into extreme detail about clothing, shoes, furniture, people's appearances, and his judgments of people based on these things. In this respect, his writing resembles more "female" style, and I often found myself skipping some of the more extreme details, to keep to the plot. Sorry, John, it's just me, I like a story that moves along briskly.Yes, in spite of his love of details, the author does keep things moving. A chance grab at a big JP Peterman's castoff dustman's coat, which he wears about town, gets the attention of the previous owner. He sees "Theo" in his old coat and starts a conversation, then has him move into his huge new house and help him as an aide, if one does not want to use the term butler or servant. "Theo" is the assigned name. Then begins a rollercoaster ride along the rich man's lonely life, the discovery that he'd married Theo's former love Anna, that he had a grown daughter by her.Next he's in on a money negotiations as a fake "first money guy" to get other suckers into a business venture, pretending to be proferring a big chunk of change although an odd duck.A thoroughly satisfying story, and suspenseful, as Theo tiptoes carefully to find out what happened to Anna. His new master's sexual appetites are also included. Not for me to reveal endings!Only once did someone espy that I had on her former garb; a hand-embroidered Croatian peasant blouse, that she'd MISTAKENLY donated. When I wore it to a local Croatian dance festival, she spotted it and came right up to me to ask where I got it. No, she didn't want it back, but actually, yes, in a way, she did. $3, Ma'am!So I know the feeling of Theo's first chapter chance encounter over a coat!Little fleas living on big fleas...

You will undoubtedly enjoy Butman's quirky characters - Alan Lowe and Arthur Worthy - in Townie. Their personal idiosyncrasies provide a humorous undertone to every scene in the novel. Butman's humor is smart and satirical.Though both Lowe and Worthy are intelligent, they are at opposite sides of the social spectrum in Olden. Lowe lives his life as a sort of hobo living alone in the woods, despite his well to-do upbringing and inheritance. Worthy is a wealthy businessman living alone in a huge custom-built mansion, who has sacrificed his personal life for his career.Alan Lowe becomes Worthy's butler and we glimpse the absurdity of life as an upperclass suburbanite and businessman through Lowe's (aka Theo) eyes. Some of the scenes are bittersweet, though, as they reveal the loneliness of both men. But in the end, through their odd friendship, they both find out what's important in life.I found their journey, while amusing, to be thought-provoking as well, almost like a modern fairy tale.

This novel has its own ironic but not unsympathetic tone towards it characters. You might hear some echoes of John Barth, Nabokov, S.J. Perelman in terms of the novel's unusual set up, humor, and wordplay. The humor in particular is interesting because much of it is sharp-edged satire of the absurdly monied classes of the eighties and nineties, with their grotesque MacMansions, devotion to gigantic cars, and the need to demonstrate to one and all that they are indeed richer than you. Yet, once we meet one of these people in the form of Arthur Worthy, we are charmed by him, much as Theo, the neo-Thoreauvian butler, is charmed. The details are rich, the oddities entertaining (I shall never look at a wrought-iron railing again without certain unrelated words coming to mind), and the twists and turns unexpected.Buy it, read it, and read it again. It's even better the second time.

Fifteen-year-old Alice Murphy is an independent-minded, offbeat young lady. Blunt, goofy and somewhat naïve, Alice longs to connect to the world around her. She has trouble fitting in at school and frequently says the wrong thing at the wrong time. Her English teacher, Mrs. Sinclair, labeled her as a B student on the first day of class and can’t see her any other way. She has a crush on lacrosse team star, Jim Flaherty, a boy who approaches life with a type of confidence and certainty that Alice has never known. While writing an article for the Glenwood High School News on the lacrosse team, Alice unwittingly stumbles upon a school scandal. Jim and several of his teammates arrive at one of their games drunk and now face disciplinary measures. Alice goes to Dean Rothschild’s office to schedule an appointment to interview him about the incident. While there, Alice and several members of the lacrosse team witness a confrontation between Dean Rothschild and his alcoholic wife. As an act of revenge, Jim organizes a production of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, a play about belligerent alcoholics. Jim plans to humiliate the dean by stylizing two of the main characters in the play to represent Dean Rothschild and his wife. Jim asks Alice and her best friend Craig, a theater aficionado, to become involved with the production. Guided by her sardonic wit and compassion, the bumbling Alice navigates her way through high school. Through the play, she comes to terms with her identity and learns to stand up for what she believes in.

There is a depth and sensitivity to her characterization not often found in Young Adult Fiction. I feel like this is a real girl and I feel vested in what happens to her. I enjoyed reading about Alice and how she develops as a person and struggles to find herself amidst the contradictions of high school life. Although there is a touch of romance it is not about Alice finding herself because a boy likes her. She becomes her own person. I love her observations.I feel touched by this story.

I'm glad I did: This book is just captivating and -- I'm at chapter 4 now -- scary, too. It has a built-in homage to Catcher In The Rye: it acknowledges it, but is by no means a copy. It is billed as a book for teens, but I think it is a great book for any "ager"! You won't be sorry if you read this book.

Although she is active on the school paper, there is rarely any controversies to report on.One day, she witnesses the behavior of the principal's alcoholic wife in the school office. Alice goes along when a plan is hatched to perform a play about belligerent alcoholics. In the end, Alice's conscience impacts on the way the school play turns out.Marie Kennedy captures the voice of a 15 year old really well. Naturally, the issues with an older sibling are part of the story.Thank you GoodReads for the book.

On June 15, 1215 England’s drunken, lecherous, cowardly King John was forced by his leading barons into a peace treaty that would have a profound impact on the country and the world. It came about over discontent with the incompetent monarch, but it established fundamental principles about the rule of law that would spread to the English colonies and worldwide. This Magna Carta, as it became known later that century, would form the basis of the rule of law and due process in England and around the globe. In this accessible introduction to the subject Ed West explains how the Great Charter came about, and follows the story of the relentlessly cruel and money-obsessed early Plantagenet kings, including John’s permanently angry father Henry and his sadistic maniac of a brother, Richard the Lionheart. Eventually John, after betraying his father and brother, selling his wife, murdering his nephew and losing his French empire through sheer incompetence and weasel-like cowardice, reluctantly agreed to a charter that paved the way for our freedom. And as Winston Churchill put it, the English-speaking world owes ‘far more to the vices of John than to the labours of virtuous sovereigns’.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The Plantagenets and the Magna Carta By J. Chambers The place was Runnymede, June 15, 1215. King John, a hopelessly incompetent, cruel, drunken king was forced into a peace treaty with his leading nobles that would become the foundation of freedom against the arbitrary authority of the government. The document, which came to be known as the Magna Carta, introduced the concept of due process of law, which became perhaps the most important plank of freedom in the English-speaking world. Although King John had no intention of honoring the document, over succeeding years, English rulers were increasingly forced to adhere to the principles of the Magna Carta.Author Ed West tells the story of how the Magna Carta came to be, and how the document would form the basis of the rule of law and due process in England and around the world. It's a rip-roaring story of an England in medieval times that makes the American Wild West look tame by comparison. For those who aren't real familiar with English history, it's a complicated story with plenty of notable characters, but the author sorts it all out pretty well, with a generous dash of tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in.Highly recommended for any history buff.

By Kindle Customer No really, it is a perfect read for anyone looking for the right mix of humor and fact about the document which is one of the most important keystones of our democracy and judicial system. Well researched and just enough to make you want more.

Stanley Hastings on safari? I don t think so. Neither did Stanley, until Alice s small inheritance coupled with scrimping on a few luxuries like food and rent allowed them to book a group trip to Zambia. Now the New York PI is hiking with lions, canoeing with hippos, and having close encounters with elephants and giraffes.

It s a dangerous safari. The leader is a reckless, gung-ho, great white hunter who delights in leaping from the jeep with a hearty Come on, gang, let s see where this lion is going! And a series of bizarre accidents quickly dwindles the group s numbers. Why was the guide s young spotter foolish enough to walk under a sausage fruit tree . . . just as one of the huge sausage fruits fell? How did the leaves of a poisonous plant wind up in a tourist s salad? Are these really accidents?

A stabbing tips the scale. It s murder, and the only policeman in a hundred miles is a park ranger (whose only murder case was that of an ivory poacher shot dead in plain sight).

It s up to Stanley to crack the case . . . if he can just avoid being eaten by a lion."

Review The Stanley Hastings mysteries depend on subversively sly wordplay. In the violently verbal world he inhabits, Stanley would be happy just to win an argument. --Marilyn Stasio"Stanley's cases have going for them some of the deftest and trickiest puzzle-plotting in the field today. "Parnell Hall succeeds in making Stanley Hastings one of a kind. "Hall s smooth style, ready sense of humor, and unusual take on murders in an untamed yet confined setting provide an enjoyable outing for armchair travelers. "In a dry comic voice, Stanley narrates this account of his furtive investigation into three murders that the other tourists observe with remarkable sang-froid. --Marilyn Stasio, 'The New York Times Book Review'"

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Murder, She Roared By Author Bill Peschel It's been years since I've seen Stanley Hastings, the P.I. who does the best he can with what he has. I had read a couple of Parnell Hall's books in the 1990s and loved them. "Suspense" and "Scam" were traditional murder mysteries enlivened by the presence of a detective who was clearly fighting above his weight and unsure of anything. The fact that he knew this, yet still doggedly pursued the truth made it easy to root for him. How can you not have hope for a man who says, "There's a lot of stuff I don't understand. I was born not understanding."So when I was offered the 19th Hastings book, "Safari," I thought it was time to get back in touch."Safari" is set in Zambia and Zimbabwe, far from Stanley's native Manhattan. Stanley and his short-suffering acerbic wife, Alice, have spent an inheritance on a low-budget wildlife tour that promised close encounters with lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes and other tourists. Their trip into the bush is interrupted when a guide is found with a dented skull under a tree bearing heavy sausage fruit. It looks like an accident from a combination of sausage fruit and gravity, and the safari moves on. But Stanley suspects murder. He's correct, of course, but not until another body or two is found, and the possibility grows that one of the tourists was responsible. After about 20 years absence, I still find Stanley funny. He still stumbles through a case, still determined to find the truth. He's also older, which gets him into trouble with Alice when he encounters a nubile member of the group. When she tells him, "you're funny," he thinks, "I wanted to die. I didn't want to be funny. Not to a girl like that. To a girl like that, funny was a pejorative to a guy like me. Funny was what you called your old uncle Wally, the one who never married."I don't recall Philip Marlowe having that problem. The other major comic motif is Alice's disdain for her husband's brains. In the early books, she pops up from time to time to add a bit of pepper to the plot. As part of the party, her derision is so constant that you'd wish Stanley would go find a sausage fruit tree.Dorothy L. Sayers described her novel "Busman's Honeymoon" as "a love story with detective interruptions." Change "love story" to "photographing animals eating each other," and that's "Safari." Don't worry about trying to solve the mystery; Stanley wraps it up in the last two chapters. Treat the book like a real safari, and take pleasure in the journey, not the destination.

Great, but needs a better proof-reader/fact-checker By Brooke Chilvers As a member of Africa's safari industry, I could not help but read a book named SAFARI, and it's the perfect book to read on the plane to Africa. Could have used a better proof-reader/fact-checker. It's TEVA shoes, not TIVA. There are absolutely no indigenous deer species in Africa (European deer have been introduced to some reserves and game farms in South Africa), so any reference to deer should clearly be a joke to the reader and not come off like a mistake in knowledge. And: Shame, shame, shame on you, Parnell Hall - especially if you have been on safari: There are absolutely NO "water buffalo" in Africa. There is only the African buffalo, more correctly referred to as Cape buffalo, among safari buffs - Syncerus caffer. Next time you write about Africa, please contact me and I'll be glad to be your proof-reader.

Roberts It is always nice to see a long running series change its location and a trip to Africa provides an interesting setting for the mystery. Parnell Hall always includes humor in his books and there were many times I laughed out loud. This is a fun, lighthearted read. The suspects are the fellow travelers on the safari and the staff so the book could be described as an outdoor locked room mystery. I could not put it down for the last third as I wanted to know who did it.I got this at the library based on some of the other reviews. Now that I have read the book I am sorry I waited to read it and did not buy it when it first came out. The review that blasted Alice, Stanley's wife, was already out before I read the book so I looked for the reviewer's points as I read. Most of the negative things attributed to Alice were actually things that Stanley mentally supposed she would say, not things that were ever uttered out loud by Alice. It is Alice's encouragement of her spouse that prompts Stanley to solve it in the end. There are really very few negative remarks by Alice in this book.I read the review that talked about misogynistic comments after I read the book. I think the reviewer stated that she did not finish the book. I wish she had read the whole book because the things she alluded to related to character descriptions at the beginning of the book. The two older women end up being the only ones who are able to correctly do the only physical activity that required lessons in the book.I hope that people will read this book and decide for themselves. If you are a fan of this series then you will like this book. Good mystery in a unusual setting. If I ever go on safari, then I will spring for the more deluxe safari based on the description of the cheap safari they went on.

As the youngest daughter of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, Marie Antoinette was born into a world of almost unbelievable privilege and power. As wife of Louis XVI of France she was first feted and adored and then universally hated as tales of her dissipated lifestyle and extravagance pulled the already discredited monarchy into a maelstrom of revolution, disaster and tragedy. This illustrated first biography by historian and writer Melanie Clegg takes a fresh look at the story of this most fascinating and misunderstood of queens, exploring her personal tribulations as well as the series of disasters that brought her to the guillotine in October 1793. Melanie Clegg is the author of five historical novels and is also a regular contributor to Majesty magazine and her own women's history blog Madame Guillotine. Her second biography, a life of Marie de Guise, is due to be published by Pen and Sword Books in 2016.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By Annie MidniteRed This book is exactly what the author, Melanie Clegg, wanted it to be: a light yet thorough biography of Marie Antoinette. Told in her conversational yet informative style, this book is incredibly readable and full of facts that were new to me. I particularly liked her description of the royal family's time in the Temple. Everything I've read previously made it sound like it was almost the same as Marie Antoinette's time in her cell at the Conciergerie, which it definitely was not. A highly entertaining and informative biography, recommended highly.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A peek into the life of a tragic queen. By catriona As an insight of the life and times of Marie Antoinette, Melanie Clegg's first biography is a great read. Fascinating details of Court life in the fishbowl of Versailles where the Royals were treated like exhibits in a zoo. As the author intended, this biography is light reading , and shows empathy for a much maligned queen. This is a book about a woman written for female readers.n

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Love this By Kathryn I loved this book. I've read a lot of books on Marie Antoinette, from The Queen's Confession 20+ years ago to The Memoir's of Rose Bertin, and quite a few of them bored me to death. Melanie Clegg's Marie Antoinette and Louis XVl aren't just historical figures, they're sympathetic, all too human people caught up in a fantasy world. When the revolution inevitably occurs, they are like children completely clueless as to how they got there and with no idea how to save themselves. This really is a wonderful book for anyone who loves history and Melanie Clegg is an extremely readable writer.
