Escape into this hugely enjoyable, big-hearted, and beautifully written novel set in Vallerosa, a European country you've never heard of before.

Find yourself in Vallerosa, a place lost in time. Vallerosa is every tourist's dream- a tiny, picturesque country surrounded by lush valleys and verdant mountains; a place sheltered from modern life and the rampant march of capitalism. But in isolation the locals have grown cranky, unfulfilled, and disaffected. In the presidential palace, hostile Americans, wise to the country's financial potential, are circling like sharks....

Can the town be fixed? Can the local bar owners be reconciled? Can an unlikely visitor be the agent of change and rejuvenation this broken idyll is crying out for?

Full of wisdom, humour, and light, The Museum of the Things Left Behind is a heartwarming fable for our times that asks us to consider what we have lost and what we have gained in modern life. A book about bureaucracy, religion, and the people who really get things done, it is above all else a hymn to the inconstancy of time and the pivotal importance of a good cup of tea.

Somewhere north of Italy, set in splendid isolation, the imaginary village-state of Vallerosa is run by "elected dictator" Sergio Scorpioni. The presidential post has been handed down to him by his father, whose shoes he fears he will never be able to fill. When a Very Important Letter arrives from Britain - well, it must be Very Important because the stamps carry our own dear Queen's head - the President and his Ministers are thrown into a frenzy of excitement and panic. Are they to expect a visit from a Very Important Personage Indeed? They certainly seem to think so....Park your disbelief under the sun-lounger and enjoy a twinkling piece of literary escapism, one that actually has some pretty profound things to say about the nature of power and the power of nature beneath the many chuckles. Here is just a flavour of Seni Glaister's outstanding debut: "Mosconi stiffened, his feathers ruffled. 'I don't know what you think this country is. Of course we have access to the internet. We are not an outpost here. We are teetering very close to the cutting edge of modern society.'"

By Kristine Fisher The Museum of Things Left Behind by Seni Glaister is a free NetGalley ebook that I began reading in early April after the end of the NCAA championship game.Glaister's book is written very much in the style of a Terry Gilliam or Wes Anderson film - one befuddled, meek protagonist surrounded by stuffy, elitist higher-ups who absurdedly huff and harumph their way into his already overcrowded life.

This story has its beginnings in the town of Alexandria, Illinois, between 1884 and 1889, at the time when the place had a population of somewhere near ten thousand. There was about it just enough of the air of a city to relieve it of the sense of rural life. It had one street-car line, a theatre,—or rather, an opera house, so-called (why no one might say, for no opera was ever performed there)—two railroads, with their stations, and a business district, composed of four brisk sides to a public square. In the square were the county court-house and four newspapers. These two morning and two evening papers made the population fairly aware of the fact that life was full of issues, local and national, and that there were many interesting and varied things to do. On the edge of town, several lakes and a pretty stream—perhaps Alexandria's most pleasant feature—gave it an atmosphere not unakin to that of a moderate-priced summer resort. Architecturally the town was not new. It was mostly built of wood, as all American towns were at this time, but laid out prettily in some sections, with houses that sat back in great yards, far from the streets, with flower beds, brick walks, and green trees as concomitants of a comfortable home life. Alexandria was a city of young Americans. Its spirit was young. Life was all before almost everybody. It was really good to be alive.

Review

"Reprints thirty-three of Dreiser's articles [and] amounts to an informal survey of American arts and popular culture at the turn of the 20th century. . . . A particular strength of the collection is the material that reveals Dreiser's interest in talented women." --Choice

"This edition provides an opportunity to follow in close compass Dreiser's process of revision. It captures his point of view at a transitional moment in his career, and it sheds light on his subsequent work." --Times Literary Supplement

About the Author Theodore Dreiser (1871 to 1945) pioneered the "Naturalist" school of writers, using detailed realism to convey stories rather than embellishing through Romantacism or Surrealism. He is known for seminal works such as "Sister Carrie," "The Titan," and "An American Tragedy." Dreiser campaigned throughout his life against social injustice, and was a committed socialist.

Semi-autobiographical Dreiser Novel By disco75 I sought this novel to supplement the memoirs "Dawn" and "Newspaper Days" as a way to gain additional insight into Theodore Dreiser's intriguing personality. I was not disappointed. The book provides information about Dreiser's sexual appetite, motivations, and philosophy. It also is an engaging read in the way that "Sister Carrie" and "Jennie Gerhart" are. Sure, Dreiser can go on in detail in ways that an editor could have made more succinct, and his sentence structure could become byzantine or odd. But the plot is well structured and the sense of impending doom that crops up is mercifully relented so that the novel does not become as squirm-inducing as "An Amercian Tragedy." The reader's sympathy is evenly divided among the principles and the events are seen as fate intertwining with the forces and choices of the personalities. Dreiser even more than Sinclair Lewis is my favorite depictor of U.S. life early in the 20th century.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. His most autobiographical novel - and his own favorite By Bomojaz This was Theodore Dreiser's favorite of his own novels - and his most autobiographical. Although Eugene Witla, the main character, is a painter, Dreiser modeled him so closely after himself that some critics have used incidents from the book as evidence for things in his own life. Much of the novel is an examination and criticism of the sexual mores of the time, which Dreiser felt restrictive and counter-productive.In the initial section of the novel, after moving to Chicago to pursue a career as an artist, Witla meets Angela Blue; after enjoying much of what the city has to offer (including other woman), Angela and Witla marry. The next part of the book is concerned mainly with Witla trying to make it as a struggling artist. Like Dreiser himself, Witla works for a while as a manual laborer and then as an illustrator in an advertising agency, where he shows some success. But Witla can't control his restless sexual impulses and much of the last section of the novel concerns his affair with the very young Suzanne Dale, who is too immature and controlled by her mother to return Witla's affections. Angela also becomes pregnant at this time; after Suzanne is dragged off to Europe by her mother, thus ending anything that existed between her daughter and Witla, Angela delivers a baby girl but dies in the process. The book ends with an apparently wiser Witla caring for his daughter, also named Angela. The last section is the least effective: what Witla could see in Suzanne Dale is hard to imagine. The early parts of the book are extremely well done, however. What distinguishes the book (and also got it banned) is Dreiser's unflinching portrayal of female sexual desire being as strong as the male's. In the midst of Witla's seduction of Angela, she is in a state of ecstasy even greater than Witla's: "She threw herself back in a transport of agony and delight. `Save me from myself,' she begs him, `I am no better than any other, but I have waited so long, so long!'" Like just about all of Dreiser's novels, it is too long and at times is a hodge-podge of ideas and sensations, but it's an honest book and reveals its purposes realistically, one adult to another.

They are printed on 8.5 x 11 paper, so they are the size of a dictionary. The print looks like it was done on a typewriter. The typesetting is sloppy; sometimes a single sentence or a paragraph in the middle of the page. These look like someone did them on a desktop printer.

Last Updated: April 2016 Vegans need and deserve our own travel guides, so we don't need to pick apart conventional guides which recommend steakhouses and zoos, and match up their recommendations with restaurants which serve real food. Vegan Travel Guides are all-in-one guides to sights, activities, food, travel practicalities and the culture, politics and history of the country, with particular emphasis on vegetarianism and veganism in society. Vegan Travel Guides work offline, so guides to Taiwan include all addresses in Chinese and English (which are not well understood by most Taiwanese, since they never use them). However recognising that most people will have a data-enabled sim card (which are cheap and affordable - details in the book) VTG integrate with popular online services: clicking on a map caption opens the map in a Google Map, and while restaurant listings include a brief description, cuisine style, opening hours, price range etc, their websites and Happycow reviews are just a click away. Why in Four Days? My first book, Taiwan - A Travel Guide for Vegans, was about 400 pages long, and while I hope it's been useful for its readers, this book is a product of the realisation that many people come to Taiwan for only a few days, often as a stopover or extra trip along with a visit to Japan, China or Korea, and that not everyone wants a 400-page book for a 4-day visit (even though of course no one has to read the whole book, and being electronic book the unread pages are no extra 'weight'). So this book is summary, designed for faster, easier navigation around Taipei. Being a smaller book my (electronic) 'delivery' costs are also lower, so I can sell the book for less. How About Happycow and Online Resources? This book is designed to replace your conventional travel guide (eg Lonely Planet) and integrate with Happycow. An increasing number of people don't use travel guides at all, preferring online travel resources such as Wikitravel, Tripadvisor etc, while finding places to eat on Happycow. It's certainly possible to plan a trip to Taiwan with these websites (and my own commercial website www.formosaguide.com, with which I share photos from this book). However I believe that a guide written by someone with years of experience living and writing about travel in this country is going to make travel smoother, and most importantly it's going to save hours of time. Itineraries outlined (based on subway lines) outline best days of the week and weather conditions based on the opening hours of attractions and top vegan restaurants along the routes, preventing the disappointment of finding a key attraction or restaurant closed unexpectedly. This guide also includes the quaint, historical Japanese mining towns of Jiufen and Jinguashi, which together make Taipei's most popular overnight trip, and are a world away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Taipei. As with all outings timing, weather, preparation, food and crowd considerations are discussed for each.

I wasn't prepared 2 weeks before my trip and had difficulty researching online due to (1) lack of time and (2) language barrier - I couldn't navigate the local Chinese websites. Good thing I stumbled upon Jesse's guide and it's very obvious that he put a lot of effort into it. I had some clarifications before purchasing and Jesse was very accommodating and replied within the hour most of the time. What I found extremely helpful was (1) the debunking of some myths of Taipei - I sure stayed away from fake meats, (2) the outings structured by location/proximity, (3) the detail on MRT exits was extremely helpful and a nice touch and, lastly (4) the personal recommendations on vegan restaurants to try. This is definitely worth the price. I know I've saved more than $5 in money and time I would've otherwise spent researching ahead or getting lost in Taipei. Thank you for making this guide - it's the first I've seen made especially for vegans and I would definitely recommend this to all my veg friends. :)

Satire at its gentlest and best and humor at its richest mark this story of a blustery retired military officer who mounts his final campaign against those self-appointed and elected guardians of the public good (and the taxpayer’s purse strings) who are guilty of the sort of petty graft and private enrichment endemic in the mythical, sleepy, southern town of Fredricksville, Georgia.

Colonel Effingham's Raid, by Berry Fleming

From Publishers Weekly This 1943 gem has been out of print for a generation, a loss to the language and to the country. Set in 1940 Georgia, it is the story of W. Seaborn Effingham, Colonel U.S. Army, retired, who returns to his home town of Fredericksville. The colonel offers to write a weekly column for a local paper, covering the war in Europe. But after many years away from Fredericksville, Effingham doesn't understand how its citizens have abdicated all government to a small, one-party clique, the Home Folks Party. In his colorful, detailed account of Revolutionary and Civil War local historywith occasional attention paid to the growing World Warthe Colonel's column stirs up the powers that be. The community is split over whether to renovate or tear down the town courthouse, and there's a showdown in which Effingham is a catalyst. Fleming's barbs seem gentle, but they go deep in this delightful satire as we watch the odd, single-minded, thoroughly upstanding Colonel bring to bear the forces of honesty and common sense. Although the ending isn't officially a victory for him, Effingham really does win. Second Chance also plans to reissue the 88-year-old Fleming's Lucinderella and The Make Believers. Bravo to publisher and author. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Time for a revival By Amanda Jenkinson Berry Fleming (1899-1989) was at one time a popular American novelist who is little remembered today, but if this book is anything to go by, that’s a shame. Not that it’s a great work of literature, but nevertheless it’s a pleasant if inconsequential gentle satire about small town politics. Blustery retired Colonel Seaborn Effingham returns to Fredericksville, his native small Georgian town, and offers to write a column for the local paper covering the war raging on the other side of the world. Not that he writes much about that war, choosing instead to write about the American Civil War, where his true interest lies. He’s horrified to discover that the town is considering renaming the town’s Monument Square after a local man of dubious morals. He decides to fight the decision. This gives Fleming plenty of opportunity to expose the petty and self-serving attitudes of the self-elected guardians of the public good. First published in 1943, it was made into a film starring Charles Coburn and is generally considered Fleming’s best book. I quite enjoyed it, and would certainly be interested in reading others of his books, and perhaps this re-issue will bring him back (deservedly) into the public eye.

Mistrustful Minds tells the story of Thomas Wyatt and his sometime lover, Anne Boleyn. The novel's theme is how love, fidelity and loyalty are continually threatened in King Henry VIII's court by its ambience of ambition, suspicion and mistrust. It is the first book in the series The Allington Accounts.

Mistrustful Minds (The Allington Accounts Book 1), by Nicholas Jones

About the Author Nicholas Jones had a successful career as a teacher of English and English Literature and high school assistant headteacher/principal before beginning to write novels. When he had the time at last to invest in writing something lengthy, the story of Thomas Wyatt was the obvious subject. He had enjoyed teaching Wyatt’s verse and had discovered that the poet’s story was an unusually intriguing one - even for Tudor times. A second novel - ‘Misalliances’ - is well under way, and will tell what happened to Wyatt after his imprisonment at the time of Anne Boleyn’s execution. The author is also a songwriter, guitarist and singer - he was a contracted songwriter in his youth - and when he is not writing (or playing the guitar), he enjoys walking in the Peak District of Northern England.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The writing and editing are very good, and Mr By LauraP Mr. Jones's novel, "Mistrustful Minds," is a well-researched and engaging portrait of the young Sir Thomas Wyatt, Tudor courtier, poet, diplomat, spy and possible lover of the ill-fated Anne Boleyn. The writing and editing are very good, and Mr. Jones's portrayal of Wyatt as a disillusioned romantic is reasonably convincing. The novel is somewhat less successful in its interpretation of certain of Wyatt's relationships, particularly his relationships with Anne Boleyn (depicted here as something of a lightskirt) and Henry VIII (a far more tolerant Henry than the historical record would seem to warrant). Still, this would have been a solid 4-star book if not for the disappointingly anticlimactic ending, shortly after the events of May 1536. Even so, I am giving it 3 stars for being a worthy effort. The author has talent, and I will be sure to look for the sequel when it comes out.

The riveting true story of America's first modern military battle, its first military victory during World War One, and its first steps onto the world stageAt first light on Tuesday, May 28th, 1918, waves of American riflemen from the U.S. Army's 1st Division climbed from their trenches, charged across the shell-scarred French dirt of no-man’s-land, and captured the hilltop village of Cantigny from the grip of the German Army. Those who survived the enemy machine-gun fire and hand-to-hand fighting held on for the next two days and nights in shallow foxholes under the sting of mustard gas and crushing steel of artillery fire.Thirteen months after the United States entered World War I, these 3,500 soldiers became the first “doughboys” to enter the fight. The operation, the first American attack ever supported by tanks, airplanes, and modern artillery, was ordered by the leader of America’s forces in Europe, General John “Black Jack” Pershing, and planned by a young staff officer, Lieutenant Colonel George C. Marshall, who would fill the lead role in World War II twenty-six years later.Drawing on the letters, diaries, and reports by the men themselves, author Matthew Davenport tells the inspiring, untold story of these soldiers and their journey to victory on the Western Front in the Battle of Cantigny. The first American battle of the “war to end all wars” would mark not only its first victory abroad, but the birth of its modern Army.

Review Washington Times:"Mr. Davenport’s very readable account gives a ground-level account of fierce fighting, centering on individuals who he followed throughout the battle, based on letters and oral histories. A saga of blood and suffering, to be sure, but the U.S. Army at its very best."Library Journal (starred review):"From the 'creeping barrage' of artillery to the eventual American victory, the reader will hear every explosion, feel each bullet whiz past, and sometimes cry at the loss of a comrade. This is brilliant work for every library."James McPherson, Pulitzer-prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era:“This story of the men who participated in the first attack by American troops in World War I is military history at its best . . . The gritty, grinding, lethal nature of warfare on the Western Front comes alive for the reader in this splendid book.”Richard Norton Smith, Pulitzer-finalist and C-Span's in-house historian:"Davenport is that rarest of military historians, marshaling a vast amount of battlefield action while keeping the human drama center-stage. The battle of Cantigny is a historical turning point, arguably the true beginning of the American Century. It has never been told better than in this moving recreation, as gripping a read as it is definitive scholarship."Joseph Persico, New York Times best-selling author of Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour:“Not only does Davenport trace the battle with addictive readability, but he brings to life both the ordinary soldiers who were there and the leaders who still resonate throughout history. . . Davenport has placed Cantigny in its rightful place on the map of World War I battles.”John Milton Cooper, author of Pulitzer-prize-finalist Woodrow Wilson: A Biography: “Davenport has brought this engagement and the men who fought and died in it and lived on after it back in a moving way. This is first-rate military history, which recount the personal reality of this country’s first foray overseas as a great power.”Lieut.General Daniel P. Bolger (US Army, retired), author of Why We Lost: A General’s Inside Account of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars: “Drawing on a wealth of eye-witness accounts, Davenport tells us what it took to go ‘over the top’ in the face of deadly machine gun fire. His aim is true. This is military history at its best.”Allan R. Millett, Stephen Ambrose professor of history at the University of New Orleans, and author of For the Common Defense:“Matthew Davenport gives a human face to the ordeal of the doughboys who gave the AEF its first victory at Cantigny, May 1918. His book recounts the reality of warfare on the Western Front.”Col. Paul Herbert (U.S. Army, retired), Executive Director of the First Division Museum:“Matthew Davenport's new account is superb. Based on exhaustive research, his narrative moves easily among the great questions of policy and strategy, the dramatic experiences of individual soldiers, and the home front. This is excellent military history and cannot fail to re-awaken our interest in that long ago conflict as we enter its centennial.”James Carl Nelson, author of The Remains of Company D:“Matthew J. Davenport's First Over There is an exhilarating, minutely detailed, boots-on-the-ground account of America's baptism by fire into the maelstrom of World War 1. It's a solid work of military history -- and a great read."Lieut.Col. Mark Grotelueschen (USAF), professor of history at the US Air Force Academy and author of The AEF Way of War:“The battle of Cantigny has been ably examined by many superb historians, but the story of that seminal engagement has never been told in a more gripping fashion than by Matthew Davenport in this powerful, popular account.”War History Online:“'First Over There' is a solid, comprehensive account of America’s first battle of World War I . . . a history that is as gritty as it is engaging.”

From the Inside Flap At first light on Tuesday, May 28th, 1918, khaki waves of American riflemen climbed from their trenches, charged across the shell-scarred French dirt of no-man'-land, and captured the hilltop village of Cantigny from the grip of the German Army.  Those who survived the buzz-saw of enemy machine-gun fire and hand-to-hand fighting in the village's hollowed-out ruins held on for the next two days and nights in shallow foxholes under the drowning sting of mustard gas and crushing steel of artillery fire.    It had been thirteen months since the United States entered the World War, and on this sunny Spring morning, these thirty-five-hundred soldiers became the first "doughboys" to enter the fight.  Drawing on the letters, diaries, and reports of the men themselves, author Matthew Davenport tells the inspiring, untold story of these soldiers of the U.S. Army's 1st Division and their journey to victory on the Western Front in the Battle of Cantigny, the first American battle of the "war to end war."  The operation was ordered by the leader of America's forces in Europe, General John "Black Jack" Pershing, and was planned by a young staff officer, Lt.Col. George C. Marshall, who would fill the Army's lead role in the Second World War, twenty-six years later.  And with an attack supported by tanks, airplanes, and modern artillery--a first for American fighters--the battle was a historic turning point, marking the first steps of the United States onto the world stage and the birth of its modern Army.

From the Back Cover At dawn, May 28th, 1918, "doughboys" of the U.S. Army's 1st Division climbed from their trenches and captured the village of Cantigny from the German Army.  Drawing on the voices of the soldiers, author Matthew Davenport tells the inspiring, untold story of their journey to victory in America's first battle of World War 1.

Congratulations to an Exciting New Author By James Drescher I was a USMC judge advocate stationed in London, England from 1988-91 and during my tour was able to visit Verdun and Belleau Wood, the latter being more akin to a pilgrimage for Marines. As I reflect back, I knew very little about The Great War. As the centenary approached, my teen-aged son asked me what World War 1 was about. I could not give him a good answer. Over the last two years, I have been fortunate to read contemporary books by the likes of Max Hastings, Lyn McDonald and Laurence Stallings, the latter having fought at Belleau Wood. I have also read memoirs written and published even as the war raged, to include Guy Empey's "Over the Top". "First Over There" focuses on the American "doughboys" of the AEF First Division assigned to launch the first American attack against German trenches in and around the French village of Cantigny. Although the attack was meticulously planned, once the officers and men went over the top, it was up to the young officers, their non-commissioned officers and khaki clad troops to oust the Germans in the first instance, but perhaps more important, to resist and defend against the inevitable artillery barrages and counter-attacks to follow. Matthew Davenport has written a meticulously researched book that pays homage to those men and brings them back to life, relying on their words as well as information from official reports and records. In the hands of a good storyteller, history is compelling, dramatic, and pertinent--- and in rare instances, inspiring. Knowing that this book was the author's first, I was pleasantly surprised, nay, impressed, at the superior quality of his prose. "First Over There" is about the attack on May 28, 1918, not the war in general (there are thousands of volumes on that subject). I sense that Mr. Davenport was perhaps hesitant to inject his owns comments, views and conclusions in the narrative but when he does, he shows a surprisingly keen insight and mature sensitivity. It is heartbreaking to learn about the death and mutilation of men who often feared failure to perform their duty more than their own death. As Barbara Tuchman said in her classic book "The Guns of August", the word honor was more than just a word in 1914. A large number of those who served at Cantigny and survived became successful and famous in the years to come, Senator Sam Ervin and General George Marshall among them. One cannot help but wonder what the world lost when other great Americans who were not destined to become famous, or even old, were shot by Maxims or blown to atoms by heavy artillery fire. Some men just vanished. The last two pages of the book brought me to tears. Thank you Mr. Davenport for all the hard work in bringing this important story to light. I eagerly await your next book. Meanwhile, I will drink a toast on Cantigny Day to the men I met in this important book when May 28 rolls around.

Giving Voice to the Men of Battle By Larry Davenport In his acknowledgements, Davenport stated that it was his, “singular aim in this book has been to accurately tell the story of the men who fought the Battle of Cantigny.” I believe he has accomplished this goal in a way that speaks to us with the very voices of those men who die on that battlefield some ninety seven years ago. This well written book took me the trenches where I could hear the voices and experience, in print, what they experienced in life. Most military books focus on an individual, strategy, or a specific company. Davenport has found a way to expand the baseline for standard military books to allow those in the trenches to speak through their letters, diaries, and field reports. They tell us of what truly occurred before, during and after the battle itself. It is their voices that make this a special book. We travel to the tomb of the unknown soldiers in Washington DC to pay our respects to those who have whose identity are not known. Here in this book honor is paid, by individual name, to the many who fell on this field of battle, known only to their families or whose names are written only in stone on a chapel wall.Over-shadowed by World II, the sacrifice made by these men are often forgotten. My thanks to Davenport for giving them the voice they earned on the remote battlefield of France long ago.If giving a true and accurate voice to history is important to you then this book is a must read.

By Veritas This was another book that I received as a gift from a good friend, and what a gift. I stayed awake most of the night reading it.Without a doubt, this is the best book written about World War I that I have read. I had seen the glowing reviews from some of the leading writers and experts in the field, the editorial reviews marking this as a "must read" and the Gold Star review from the Library Journal; they all hit the mark! I feel ashamed that I had even wondered if a first-time writer could write a book that would compare with those written by Persico, McPherson or Cooper. This book does not just compare, it exceeds them (and their work is some of my favorite)With a writing style that makes this an easy, and compelling, read, Davenport takes you back in time to when the USA entered the First World War and covers, in intense detail the first battle that they faced. His research is meticulous and very, very extensive, He uses letters, journal entries, press articles and other materials from the time that truly reflect the feelings and mood among the rank and file soldiers, the officers, and the view of those back home. Some of this will move you to tears thinking of what all involved went through.Another incredibly detailed part of this book that makes it more than worth it, are the pictures that were pulled from archives and other, some previously unseen, collections. The pictures complement the narrative and show a who's who of men who led and fought at Cantigny and who went on to become some of the nation's military and political leaders in the decades that follow. Marshall, Eisenhower, Ervin and many more.Every woman or man serving in the military, or looking at joining the military, should read this book, as should every child in school, every student in college and anyone who wants to see where the shaping of the USA in the 20th Century began. This is absolutely not just military history, but history at its finest. I think this book would also be a blockbuster movie.Matthew J. Davenport has a winner with this incredible book, and I eagerly await his next.

Shortly after Carlos Hamilton began his medical practice in Houston, he inherited an over-sized piano that had belonged to his great-grandmother. The difficulty in moving the instrument, even in the 20th century, made him wonder how―and why―a family in 1857 would move it from North Carolina to a rural east Texas plantation so that a ten-year-old child could study music. Although Berta Smith Wootters had died many decades before Hamilton was born, her children continued to express great affection and admiration for her. Her husband, John Wootters, had died young, likely from complications of a Civil War wound, yet she persevered, managing her affairs and guiding all her children to university educations and productive lives.Wanting to discover more about the life of this strong woman, Hamilton traveled to Crockett, Texas, where he met Edgar Pouncey, a descendant of a family of slaves who had come to Texas with the Smith family. As Pouncey related stories of the Smith family over a hundred years later, he spoke with respect and warmth. According the Pouncey, the Smiths’ provisions for their former slaves allowed them to found a church and a school that still played vital roles in the community. The insight gained on this visit set the author on a decades long journey to understand his forbearers and their turbulent and tragic times. A Rose Blooms in Texas is the culmination of his meticulous research on the life of Berta Smith Wooters, beginning with her graduation from Fairfield Woman’s College. Hamilton presents the narrative as historical fiction and augments it with original letters and documents. What emerges is a compelling picture of life in East Texas during the Civil War and the strength of character of a woman who was able to preserve her family’s values of education and enlightened treatment of others―and her beloved piano―for future generations.

Bevill A Rose Blooms in Texas, Coming of Age in the Civil War Era,by Carlos R. Hamilton Jr. Bright Sky Press, Houston Texas 2015The story begins in the rolling farmlands of Bladen County, North Carolina in 1857, where author Carlos Hamilton Jr. weaves this engaging tale of romance, drama, hardships and the dangers that came with the looming secession of Texas from the United States and the war that followed. The central character of the story, Miss Berta Smith, is abright, talented and spirited young redhead, who travels with her family, their slaves (and her upright piano) to the piney woods of Crocket, Texas to pursue a better life on a new plantation. One of the revelations in the book is just how emotionally close the slaves are to the family members and vice versa. The flow of characters and word pictures painted in their daily interactions offer a unique picture of life in east Texas during this tumultuous period. In addition to Berta, we are introduced to her brother Lucius, her parents Anna Jane and Major John Smith, a young man named John Wootters and two household slaves, Hannah and her husband Oscar. These slaves play an integral part of the story since they are intimately involved in managing the Smith’s family life at home and on the farm.Berta, an aspiring pianist, finds herself strongly attracted to Wootters who, like her brother Lucius, is compelled to join the Confederate army. The prelude for warand the acrimonious political issues which caused it were widely debated in the home,at places of work and in the newspapers. Although the sentiment in Texas was for secession from the Union rather than any changes to the institution of slavery, the average family felt far removed from the headlines, that is until the young men in the county were called to duty in the army. Begging her brother not to go to war, he tells her “These are times, Berta, when men must be prepared to defend their homes and their freedom. If war comes to this country, I will feel obligated to defend our household.”She saw him become a man.Rather than getting bogged down in the minutia of details in regards to the wartime engagements of Lucius Smith and John Wootters, Hamilton delegates this to a detailed discussion of each man’s military service and the horrors of the battlefield into a rather lengthy appendix. The appendix also includes notations in a family bible, letters, obituaries, confederate war records, county histories and a lengthy discussion of the bitter political partisanship which led up to and included the war between the states. Not only does this help keep the story moving, but the appendix also serves to put the social and political world surrounding the central characters into their proper context. After his Confederate military service ends prematurely due to an injury, John Wootters returns for a visit to the Smith Plantation. Emotionally crushed by the death and destruction that he witnessed in battle, he is comforted by Hannah, the house slave who tells him it would be good for him to stay close to his fellow soldiers who also returned from the war. She tells him “White people can’t really understand what it’s like to be a slave, but other slaves do understand. One of the ways our people keeps up their spirits is by visiting with each other about the hardships and bad things that they’ve seen. Soldiers have shared the same bad times, just like slaves have. You are going to be all right, Captain Wootters, but it’s going to take time.” This insightful perspective becomes part of his transition into a normal life following the war by working with other Confederate veterans who are dealing with their disabilities. There are many elements of the healing process in this story. Following the war, Berta embarked on a mission to teach children (including former slaves) the joys of reading, writing and learning. “It seems unfair to expect people to be able to function as freedmen when they lack the many skills needed to succeed in any capacity” she said. Major Smith deeded a home site to Hannah and Oscar, in exchange for their ongoing services to his wife and daughter. The Smiths also made provisions for their former slaves which allowed them to form a church and a school which played an important part in this newly freed community. It’s a tale of love, bravery, healing and hardships - and a young woman blooming into adulthood during the most turbulent era in American history. It is a real gem of a story that all of us can learn from, enjoy and relate to. Highly recommended.James P. Bevill, author of The Paper Republic, the Struggle for Money, Credit and Independence in the Republic of Texas.

THE WEALTH OF NATIONS (Illustrated), by Adam Smith

Review "Adam Smith's enormous authority resides, in the end, in the same property that we discover in Marx: not in any ideology, but in an effort to see to the bottom of things."--Robert L. Heilbroner

From the Inside Flap Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. Written in clear and incisive prose, The Wealth of Nations articulates the concepts indispensable to an understanding of contemporary society; and Robert Reich's new Introduction for this edition both clarifies Smith's analyses and illuminates his overall relevance to the world in which we live. As Reich writes, "Smith's mind ranged over issues as fresh and topical today as they were in the late eighteenth century--jobs, wages, politics, government, trade, education, business, and ethics."

"From the Trade Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover The Wealth Of Nations was recognized as a landmark of human though upon its publication in 1776. As the first scientific argument for the principles of political economy, it is the point of departure for all subsequent economic thought.

This is Smith's complete and unabridged final version of the Wealth of Nations. It provides footnotes on Smith's wording, the historical context, and the differences between Smith's 5th edition and previous editions. In addition, the margin of the pages contain useful notes which summarize Smith's writing. For the price, this is clearly the superior choice. Now, if you're wondering whether you should undertake such an endeavor, let me just say that Adam Smith was a professor of rhetoric. He explains everything so precisely, yet so comprehensible. Smith's writing is by no means difficult; I actually found it a surprisingly easy read given its antique nature. Once you get through the first chapter, you get quite used to Smith's writing style. If you put adequate time and energy into it, it's not hard at all.

Wight Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations brilliantly analyzes how a nation's living standards can be raised. In large part his wisdom still applies today. To briefly summarize Smith's thinking:1. Standards of living are determined by the productivity of workers.2. Productivity of workers is greatly enhanced by specialization (see the famous example of the pin factory in the first chapter!).3. Greater specialization is possible only if the market size grows. Thus, government laws that prohibit growth of the market hurt specialization, and thereby keep living standards from rising. This is why Smith opposed laws that restricted trade or created monopolies. Smith actively worked to keep Britain from going to war against its American colonies over trade issues. The Wealth of Nations is a political tract designed to sway the British parliament (obviously it failed in that regard).4. Productivity of workers is enhanced by raising their wages.5. Productivity of workers is enhanced by publicly funded education.6. The role of markets is exquisitely analyzed by Smith. Self-interest leads people to carry out private activities that lead to social betterment, as if by an "invisible hand."7. It is a serious misinterpretation of Smith to assert that greed or selfishness is the same as self-interest. Smith labored hard to avoid any such confusion. Please see his other book which addresses this specific issue: The Theory of Moral Sentiments.8. Clearly Smith favored limited government. But Smith was NOT a strict advocate of laissez-faire. He ended his illustrious career as commissioner of customs, a job he took seriously, and which he would not have taken had he not thought this level of intervention in the economy warranted.Read the first three chapters of WN: they contain the essence of the arguments above. Then look in the index to find reference to the "invisible hand" "monopoly" "colonies" and other subjects of interest.Buy the GLASGOW EDITION of the Wealth of Nations. This is the most up-to-date annotated version. It is available (very cheaply) from the Liberty Fund Press in America. If you only want one copy, that is the only one to buy today.

My criticism is with the Great Minds Series edition of the book. The Great Minds Series is an abridged version. Huge chunks have been edited out of the book, yet nowhere do they let you know this before making the purchase. I bought this book specifically because I wanted to cite it, and I can't because the parts I wanted to quote have been edited out.Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" is a worthy book for any private library, but purchase an edition other than the one offered by the so-called "Great Minds Series."

A blueprint to finding your spirituality By Desiree LaBombard If you’re seeking a path to a calmer, happier and more loving life built around spirituality, than this book is a definite must-read. The book is a sort of blue print to discovering who you truly are and accepting yourself as well as others on your path to spirituality.I’ve never been a religious person, but I’ve always been interested in the idea of spirituality. I found this book to be extremely helpful in that it gives you many different techniques to obtain spirituality but reminds you to remain grounded and not to obsess over it. It has taught me to be present in the moment, to be grateful for what I have and to be compassionate for others. The list of affirmations within the book have also been extremely helpful in allowing me to realize my self-worth and the beauty of the world and people around me.I especially enjoy the concept of keeping a spiritual journal and using it to reflect but also to look back on at later times. Overall, great book.

Harding If you are seeking a more spiritual existence in this life, this is the book for you. Many people are shying away from a superficial life and preferring something more real and satisfying. This book may help you in that quest. It gives you 25 techniques, filled with examples, quotes, videos, stories, exercises and encouragement that will help you attain more spirituality in your life. Some of the techniques, including self acceptance, being aware, being present and knowing who you are, are essential before you start your spiritual journey. The book moves on to choosing to be a spiritual person, avoiding obsessing about it, being grateful for what you already have and doing the best with it. It emphasizes that being present is important but remember the past is too so that you can see examples of spiritual people in your life. The book tells you how to really observe your surroundings and people, gives suggestions on things to read and study and brings into perspective the meaning of real love everything on our earth. It stresses being compassionate and suggests ways to help others. It discusses journalling as a technique to become more spiritual not only by just writing it, but by reading it later. The book gives you ideas for inspiration within the arts, nature and things like labyrinth walking, using crystals and vision quests. It gives you valuable affirmations, methods of meditation, information on prayer, ways to find a teacher or group with common interests and how to surrender to your spirit. What I liked most about the book was the fact that religion is seldom mentioned so people that do not subscribe to religion can enjoy and use the book just as well as those who are religious. With all the examples and suggestions you will find a true definition of spirituality and how to find it, and inner peace, for yourself.

He used to get hyper and impatient so soon that it was impossible to calm him down unless he calmed himself. I have been looking for so many books that can suggest some ways to be more spiritually enlightened. Thankfully I came across this book. In it, the author has listed 25 techniques that can be used for becoming enlightened and at peace. Trust me, all the techniques are very very easy to follow and effective in reality. The author has suggested tools that help you grow spiritually. I read this book and then recommended it to my partner. You won't believe but I have actually started started feeling a positive change in him. Now, he has become more understanding, calm and patient. He understands the situation better and does not react aggressively or promptly. I would highly recommend this book to all the people out there, who would like to spiritually enlighten themselves and attain peace. Go ahead and bring a positive change in your life. Good Luck!!

There are some names, the mere mention or thought of which conjure up distinct personalities; such are Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Wagner; but not one has the extraordinary individuality of that of Paganini. Though few can be living who ever saw the man, though his portraits are not now commonly to be met with, the name of Paganini at once calls up a picture--weird, uncanny, demoniacal; brings back the faint echo of performances long lost in the corridors of time; and excites the imagination in a manner altogether unique.

Nicolo Paganini: His Life and Work, by Stephen Samuel Stratton

About the Author Stephen Samuel Stratton was born in London on December 19th, 1840. He began his career as a chorister of St. Mary's Church, Ealing. He studied harmony and composition under Charles Lucas. As an organist, he held these appointments—St. Mary the Virgin, Soho; and St. James's Church, Friern Barnet. On his removal to Birmingham in 1866, he was organist at St. Barnabas Church; Edgbaston Old Parish Church; St. John's, Harborne; and the Church of the Saviour (1878-1882). In 1879 he commenced a series of chamber concerts in Birmingham. From 1877 until the day of his death, Mr. Stratton was the musical critic of the "Birmingham Daily Post." In that position his influence was decidedly beneficial. He was also a contributor to the London Musical Press. He will be remembered as the joint author (with Mr. James D. Brown) of "British Musical Biography." His "Life of Mendelssohn" was written for Messrs. Dent's "Master Musicians." Among other items may be mentioned "Musical Curiosities," and valuable papers read before the "Incorporated Society of Musicians." In private life he was highly esteemed—an honorable citizen—a genial, kind hearted man, with a genuine love of his profession. He died, after a short illness, in Birmingham, on June 25th, 1906.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Informative and an easy read By Amazon Customer I'm a huge fan of Paganini's music and wanted to know more of him and his life. This is one of the few books available about him. The author seems to have done his research and there are quite a few interesting things in this book. The chapters about his youth were very interesting; coming from an Italian family I was reminded of my own. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in his life and music.
