Useful if you want to use your smart phone to book ahead to albergues and work out how long you are going to walk for each day. The great thing is you can have it on your smart phone and refer to it when needed, rather than carrying heavy books. The guide is written by someone who doesn't assume that you are an athlete which is refreshing to say the least. Defo worth the price!

There’s a really easy way to get things started…go look at one of your competitors. There are tons of ways to do this - the easiest way would be to put your keyword(s) into Google and see what pops up. The order of the results is based in good part on Google’s PageRank, which has a lot to do with the quantity of other sites that link to a particular site. Pick one of the results near the top and click on the link. Hover on a banner or text advertising box and see where the URL leads. Take note of the particular network like Commission Junction, ClickBank, Linkshare, etc. and the particular programs on the site. I keep a list using Microsoft Notepad when I surf competitive sites for clients. The majority of the time I ignore CPM-based networks like DoubleClick or AdBrite, and contextual ad networks like Google and Yahoo. I do pay particular attention to the classification affiliate network banners and text ads. For instance, if you surf a handful competitors and find a lot of banner advertising for web site hosting, which means your competitors are having at the least some luck with website hosting affiliate programs. When you come up with a good list of networks, programs and categories, go visit the networks that appear the most on the sites (try to go to 5 or 6 distinctive sites so you can see any patterns that emerge). You should now have a terrific list to start from, incorporating a list of networks, programs and keywords. Now all you need to do is poke around and see which pay the greatest and try to figure out which your visitors may like. Whilst you’re on the other sites, try to get a feel for where on the page the ads are placed, which can make a huge distinction in clickthrough and conversion.

Fifteen-year-old Alice Murphy is an independent-minded, offbeat young lady. Blunt, goofy and somewhat naïve, Alice longs to connect to the world around her. She has trouble fitting in at school and frequently says the wrong thing at the wrong time. Her English teacher, Mrs. Sinclair, labeled her as a B student on the first day of class and can’t see her any other way. She has a crush on lacrosse team star, Jim Flaherty, a boy who approaches life with a type of confidence and certainty that Alice has never known. While writing an article for the Glenwood High School News on the lacrosse team, Alice unwittingly stumbles upon a school scandal. Jim and several of his teammates arrive at one of their games drunk and now face disciplinary measures. Alice goes to Dean Rothschild’s office to schedule an appointment to interview him about the incident. While there, Alice and several members of the lacrosse team witness a confrontation between Dean Rothschild and his alcoholic wife. As an act of revenge, Jim organizes a production of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, a play about belligerent alcoholics. Jim plans to humiliate the dean by stylizing two of the main characters in the play to represent Dean Rothschild and his wife. Jim asks Alice and her best friend Craig, a theater aficionado, to become involved with the production. Guided by her sardonic wit and compassion, the bumbling Alice navigates her way through high school. Through the play, she comes to terms with her identity and learns to stand up for what she believes in.

There is a depth and sensitivity to her characterization not often found in Young Adult Fiction. I feel like this is a real girl and I feel vested in what happens to her. I enjoyed reading about Alice and how she develops as a person and struggles to find herself amidst the contradictions of high school life. Although there is a touch of romance it is not about Alice finding herself because a boy likes her. She becomes her own person. I love her observations.I feel touched by this story.

I'm glad I did: This book is just captivating and -- I'm at chapter 4 now -- scary, too. It has a built-in homage to Catcher In The Rye: it acknowledges it, but is by no means a copy. It is billed as a book for teens, but I think it is a great book for any "ager"! You won't be sorry if you read this book.

Although she is active on the school paper, there is rarely any controversies to report on.One day, she witnesses the behavior of the principal's alcoholic wife in the school office. Alice goes along when a plan is hatched to perform a play about belligerent alcoholics. In the end, Alice's conscience impacts on the way the school play turns out.Marie Kennedy captures the voice of a 15 year old really well. Naturally, the issues with an older sibling are part of the story.Thank you GoodReads for the book.

Much has been written of the titanic clashes between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army at Stalingrad, but this volume tells the other, equally important half of the story of Fall Blau (Case Blue). Learning from their experiences during the sweeping advances of Operation Barbarossa a year before, Wehrmacht commanders knew that Nazi Germany's lack of oil was a huge strategic problem. Seizure of the Caucasus oilfields, which were responsible for 82% of the Soviet Union's crude oil, would simultaneously alleviate the German army's oil shortages whilst denying vital fuel resources to the Red Army. While Army Group B advanced along the Volga towards Stalingrad, Army Group A, spearheaded by Ewald von Kleist's elite Panzerarmee 1 was to advance into the Caucasus to seize the oilfields of Maikop, Grozny and Baku. Featuring full-color artwork, archival photos and detailed analysis, this book follows the vicious, intense fighting that characterized one of the most important campaigns of World War II.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Hitler's Gambit for Seizing the Soviet Oil Fields Falls Short By Edmund P. Leigh Robert Forczyk provides an excellent overview of a Hitler's Thrust for the Caucasus Oil Fields in the 1942- 1943 time period in this 100 page history book on this important but little reported chapter of WW II of the Eastern front. This history is known as the German Army Group A's thrust to deny the Soviets their main supply of oil while hoping to gain the same for the Germans and its Axis allies. He uses well his familiar formula of an objective analysis of both sides in this conflict using concise summaries, review of the commander leaders in this series of battles, equipment of each side such as tanks, personnel carriers, artillery and machine guns used, tactics, levels of training, men, morale, logistics and resources especially fuel available. Also the salient advantage of aircraft such as the Ju-87 Junkers dive bombers as the main weapon to destroy defensive lines. Additionally he uses quite a few maps and excellent art work by Steve Noon to provide a vivid portrayal of the savage fighting scenes at key junctures in this titanic struggle for the majority of the oil fields of the Soviet Union. Even Soviet Marshal Timoshenko said after the war that this strategy of cutting the Soviet Union in two at the Volga (i.e Stalingrad) and seizing the oil fields in the Caucasus was the correct one if Germany was to win. It appears that Germany had victory within its reach but not its grasp and so lost the war here. The Soviet Union was on the ropes; but the Germans and their allies could not deliver the coup de grace. One of the key facts that Forczyk provides is that Stalin's main intention in 1939 was that the Soviet Union provided 1 million tons of oil for Germany during Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact from August of 1939 to June 22 of 1941. Without this enormous amount of fuel that Stalin so generously provided it is doubtful whether Hitler could have defeated France in 1940. Hitler needed lots of fuel for his war machine. This enormous windfall allowed the Third Reich to defy the British blockade which was set up to cripple their need to prosecute the war against the Western Allies. Apparently Stalin wanted the Third Reich to attack the West and was providing the means to conduct the war effectively when his dupe or minion decided that Germany's real enemy was in the East. Also Stalin was extremely upset when France and its British partner collapsed in 7 weeks in the spring of 1940. (See Kruschev Remembers) It seems he wanted the Western forces to exhaust and weaken Germany so Germany would not invade eastward. As it has been said many times before........."There is no honor amoung thieves".........But back to the story of the series of Caucusus battles which decided Germany and its allies' fates. This book with its colorful and detailed maps provides the dates of the main lines between the adversaries as the Germans and their allies the Rumanians and Slovaks surge towards the Caspian Sea and then after the Stalingrad encirclement recede back to their starting pointing of Rostov on the Don. This retreat was apparently well done because Generaloberst Ewald von Kleist was promoted to a Field Marshal for his handling of it.Forczyk has the master's touch for explaining the complex. Also he doesn't hesitate to criticize both the Germans and the Soviets for dubious choices in this massive conflict which decided the fate of the Third Reich. The Soviets tend to be very unpredictable in whether they panic or defend fiercely their lines. There are many books the German Army Group B effort at Stalingrad and the Volga front but the majority of the German forces of Operation Blue were concentrated in the Group A advance to seize the Soviet oil fields of Maikop, Grozney and Baku. Maikop was siezed and Grozney was bombed when Hitler decided that if he could not have that oil field then neither would the Soviets but Baku was beyond reach. Also mentioned is Stalin's notorious Order 227 which forbade retreat and which condemned at least a million of Soviets to a awful fate of being a traitor if captured by the German and this included prison camp for the prisoner's Soviet family as well. In Stalin's view there were no Soviet POW's; they were all traitors to be treated accordingly. Of course, many of these unfortunate Soviet souls were given the choice between starvation or serving in the German army as willing helpers or Hiwis. Approximately 50,000 of these Hiwis died in the Stalingrad cauldron (not in this book). Hiwis knew that if recaptured by the Soviets they would be summarily executed so according to Alexandre Solzhenitsyn in his book The Gulag Archipalego noted that Sovet Hiwis tended to fight to the death because they knew the Soviet system of punishment.Highest recommendation for this book. A great addition for understanding the 1941-1945 Soviet Germany conflict. Very well done.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Overview of this Campaign By Yoda Any review of this book would have to start out by pointing out that it is part of Osprey Publishing’s “Campaign” series. Hence it is relatively short, at only 96 pages in length (about a third or so of which consist of illustration of one type or another). Hence if one is looking for a detailed academic tome, like Dr. David Glantz’s multi-volume studies of campaigns like Stalingrad or Barbarossa, one will be disappointed. Then again it really would be unfair and unjustifiable to expect such a tome considering the limitations of the format imposed by the Campaign series. The relevant question to really ask is how well does the book do considering the format it is part of? The answer is very, very well. The book does an excellent job at all aspects that the Campaign series consists of, from the section on the strategic picture at the beginning of the campaign, through the commanders, how the campaign progressed, the aftermath and the battlefield today. The book starts off with the very important impetus for this campaign – Hitler’s desire for oil. The text’s first sentence is the following quote from Hitler: “If I don’t get the oil of Maikop and Grozny then I must liquidate the war”. Dr. Forzyk then delves into the commanders on both sides. In short and in a nutshell the German leadership, in the form of List, was a grave mistake. Not that he was a bad leader. He was not. The problem was that he was the wrong type of leader. He was an infantry leader with not enough understanding or experience commanding mechanized forces. This was a serious problem considering that the campaign was of a blitzkrieg nature plus had to be won in a very short time before the weather in the region put an end to fighting and without adequate forces. In addition, List misused the resources he was given. He used important elements of his mechanized forces in mountainous areas and used infantry, instead, in wide open areas where the benefits of maneuver that mechanized forces could have brought were squandered away. In addition, List, placed too much emphasis on protecting flanks, chasing ancillary goals and expending far too many troops (whole corps) on Russian troops already trapped. These doomed the campaign. That is not to say that Hitler’s usually meddling did not cause enough damage (i.e., changes in campaign priorities, not delivering promised forces to List, especially a number of mountain divisions that may have made a difference, etc.). From the Russian side, the most important negative was that those on top of the hierarchical command heap were the usual bunch of political cronies, albeit the lower level commanders were more experienced and better (as were lower level Germans like Kleist). With respect to the how the campaign played out, in a nutshell, the Germans started out quite well. Even though they did not bag as many troops as in previous campaigns they still did very well initially. Unfortunately they eventually came up to mountainous regions, stronger soviet defenses and bad weather. As a result the Germans never were unable to conquer the oil producing regions they so desired. Plus they were not even able to get more than an inconsequential trickle of fuel out of thea oil producing regions they did manage to conquer. Thus there were initial tactical and operational successes followed by strategic defeat.Overall an excellent book and highly recommended. It should also be emphasized that the book is not just a re-tread of already existing secondary literature. The author has made extensive use of primary sources, in particular German language. There is one particular weaknesses with the book though. That involves the Nazi leadership’s fantasy of being able to use this region, even if the military campaign was successful, as a means of fueling the German war machine (or a significant portion of it anyway). The problem was that just getting crude oil to the service is one (and only) step in obtaining useable fuel supplies. A second problem is that crude needs to be refined. Hence it also needs to be transported to refineries. It is inconceivable that the Germans could have built and operated a transportation infrastructure to transport so much crude oil back to refineries in axis territories (primarily refineries in Rumania). Even if they could transport it there was the question of whether or not the refining capacity existed to handle this crude. Unfortunately these key issues are not discussed in the book. They are what made Hitler’s dream nothing more than a Kafkaesque fantasy that made the military consequences of the campaign, to a very large degree, moot. One last point this reviewer would like to make is that, as Dr. Forcyzk pointed out, German special forces were widely used in this campaign. For those interested in an in-depth role that these forces played this reviewer highly recommends David Higgins “Behind Soviet Lines – Hitler’s Brandenburgers Capture the Maikop Oilfields 1942” (part of Osprey’s “Raid” series). That book also has a more detailed discussion regarding the oil production issues and how they doomed the campaign from the beginning.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A fine survey of Caucasus campaign By F. Carol Sabin The book covers, in a very clear manner (albeit not very in-depth, considering the book’s short length though this is not too much of a disappointment) the operations of the Axis Army Group A in Caucasus region. As usually, Dr Forczik’s book is more aimed at the more serious student of the war than the novice, but it does offer all readers a unique perspective of how the Axis forces prepared for and invaded Caucasus region in 1942-1943.The author does an excellent job in showing the origins of the campaign and the opposing forces & commanders. The author is extremely knowledgeable and the book reflects this. His experience as armored expert, both as on academic and practical level, is plenty shown in this book.He offers in 60+ pages a detailed and well researched description of the campaign, focusing on the main phases and battles.I was particularly impressed by the description of mountain troops’ capabilities and battles, in fact the only area in the USSR where the mountain warfare was fully experienced. In Romania we still have some veterans who fought in 2nd and 3rd mountain divisions in Caucasus and many books about their battles. As a small note I just want to mention that all four Romanian mountain divisions were quickly disbanded after the war by the Soviets. In addition, the book is beautifully illustrated. The various schemes of maneuvers are wonderfully shown in 3-dimensional “bird’s eye views”. These illustrations, many times, are worth more than many pages of words. The book does have a few observations that need to be mentioned however, concerning Romanian Army participation in this campaign. One minor is that it does not contain any reference about 3rd Romanian army commander (among other Axis Armies commanders), General Petre Dumitrescu, whose contribution in conquering the Taman peninsula was vital. Having in mind that ROU forces – 6-7 divisions – were more than a quarter of the forces involved, that is, a substantial war effort, I think he deserves a place among other armies’ commanders.Other thing refers to the casualty figures mentioned at page 91:“The Romanian 3rd Army incurred about 45.000 casualties in this period-25 July 1942 to 30 January 1943-of which more than 12.000 were dead or missing”. In reality, the casualties were much lighter-no more than 10-15.000 personnel. (For example, the seizure of Nalchik by the ROU 2nd Mountain Division, plus German Stuka support, cost about 820 personnel, but capturing over 3000 Soviets).According to some Romanian books the casualties were: “Between 1 July 1942 and 31 October 1942, the Romanian forces casualties engaged on Caucasus AND Stalingrad axis were 9.252 dead, 28.249 wounded and 1.588 missing”. So, we have about 40.000 in total, in two areas of operations. The Romanian forces in Stalingrad region supported the vast majority of the casualties during the analyzed period-cca. 25-30.000. In Stalingrad area, during Uranus and subsequent Soviet operations, ROU forces lost over 158.000 personnel. Also, in the Kuban bridgehead, between 1 February 1943 to 2 October 1943, Romanian forces lost 1.598 dead, 7.256 wounded and 806 missing.Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that ROU 3rd Army was transferred at the beginning of September 1942 in Seraphimovich and Kletskaya areas in order to take over the defense sector between Italian 8th Army and German 6th Army at Stalingrad. So, no more ROU 3rd Army HQs in Caucasus after September 1942! The remaining ROU divisions were divided between different German Corps HQs.All of these observations, in aggregate, and considering the book’s short length, are really little more than minor however and do not deter from the book much. This is a highly recommended book on the subject that provides much illumination on this campaign.

Throughout the entire vocal profession, among singers, teachers, and students alike, there is a general feeling of the insufficiency of present knowledge of the voice. The problem of the correct management of the vocal organs has not been finally and definitely solved. Voice Culture has not been reduced to an exact science.

By critical thinker This work is a critical analysis which exposes the shortcomings and failures of modern methods of singing instructions.Having done so,it then proceeds to elaborate on the superceded method, namely bel canto or the so called old italian method. The author establishes the validity of the latter method by reference to the results it obtained. He convincingly argues that the decline in the quality of singers can be arrested only by a return to the bel canto method. In summary,I found this book to be very engrossing;a definite five star effort.

Long and technical but worthwhile reading for a serious singer By Amazon Customer Probably the single most useful book on singing ever written because it repeats over and over the simple mantra, listen, listen, listen. Listen to great singers, listen to yourself as you sing, and listen to recordings of yourself and learn what you can do better. But most of all listen to the great singers and learn HOW they sing, not how they sound!

Despite the fact that there might be some valuable information, there are so many typos that it is impossible to determine!! I cannot believe they would publish a book with so many typos on every single page!!! I can't even find a title or heading without a single typo in it. I've become so frustrated trying to read it (and TRANSLATE it into correct English), that I've given up. Obviously, this is not a book from a reputable source...

Well written, no boring parts that gets you lost, a nice pace to keep things going. Finished the book and I was like "It's done already!! I want the next" So I'm on the waiting train now for book four.More about the contents of the book, semi-spoiler alert! This picks up right after book two. Hannah is doing OK considering her operation and hard recovery. She's a completely different person but it becomes rather obvious that Mason/Ricky and Hannah are brother and sister. Both devious and sneaky when it suits them. She's growing stronger mentally and physically and it's not only because of her brother. Mason's team of doctors are there to help, specially Nick. All goes well for a while until Mason falls sick himself and it's Hannah's personal mission to make him better. She's convinced she can and will save him, nobody really beliefs her and she seeks council from the church. When things go really south it's Nick who pulls through and starts the journey with Hannah. She needs to find a white rabbit!Sick, nearly dead, comatose Dr Mason goes on his own journey following the white rabbit.Think both journeys are important for both Hannah and Mason. In book two Hannah had a lot to battle through and now it's Masons turn. Once he's on the road to recovery he's back to his usual grouchy self but still he has changed too. He isn't convinced about Nick and his intentions but he is very slowly coming around. Not diving further into the contents because that would only result in really having to spoil you all and the book is too good for that !! So if you haven't yet, buy it and read it!

By Anna Salamatin This book opens to find Hannah confined to Rick's bed, after her surgery, both legs up in traction, agonizing pain in her straightening legs, and tears running down her cheeks! Rick is doing all he can to keep her comfortable. He has hooked her up with the internet and she is catching up with the last 30 years. ...but this not just Hannah's story..... Rick is about to take his own trip down the rabbit hole. It's all going to begin with a small boy who came to the hospital in a very bad way. No one could figure out what was wrong, not even the great Doctor Richard Mason...... Soon Rick himself is admitted into the hospital. Hannah is beside herself, she is on a mission. She believes she has had a message from God, and she must find the white rabbit. That is some how the answer as to how to save Rick. .... I was totaly captivated with everything that happens throughout this story. Hannah is just remarkable, she is not the same person who came out of that group home a few months ago. She is learning how to live and Rick hhimself learns a lot from his little Christian Sister. I don't do spoilers, so your going to have to read it for yourself. This is a story about real love, hope, and redemption. I do recommend this whole series as a must read. i was gifted this book in return for my honest review.

By Brenda Romine I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review; This book is a continued version of Hannah and Rick,a brother sister team who are both over coming some really tough situations. Hannah is in traction from her most resent surgery on her legs. She has a long road ahead of her in her recovery. But the team of doctors and her brother there to help her things are looking up for her.Not to mention her hot PT guy.Which by the way Rick hates...Wait does Rick even like anyone?? Rick is a crotchety man,his aches and pains don't his attitude. Then again,he has another problem he needs to deal with.... His pill popping and booze guzzling isn't helping any.Rick comes face to face to a child in the ER one night,a very sick child he can't save. When the little boy dies on Rick's duty,Rick takes it pretty hard. Then Rick suddenly comes down sick and on deaths door step.Everyone thought it was his pill habit... Everyone but Hannah.Hannah just knows it has something to do with a white rabbit that God had placed in her heart.Hannah must search for the clues to the rabbit and save Rick. This is an amazing story. It just keeps getting better! I'm hoping this is not the end to it.I want to see Hannah move on to a normal life with Nick.It would be nice to see Rick find love also.I still feel there is more to this story to come.... I hope :)

Author of the classic Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe won the Man Booker International Prize for lifetime achievement and is one of Africa's most influential writers.

Set in 1920s Nigeria, Arrow of God explores the clash between the old and the new when a village's chief priest loses his power, his son, and his sanity to Christianity and white authority.

By Peter Opara Being Igbo, and having read almost all that Chinua Achebe has written, I can say that this is one of the best literary works I have ever come across. I read Arrow of God for the firs time when I was about fourteen and even at that age, it made a great impression on me. I have read it repeatedly over the years, and with each read, the raw reality of this book thinly veiled by what another reviewer reffered to as "polite prose" completely immersed me in Ezeulu's society, generation and struggle. This was a wonderful story written by one of the greatest story-tellers ever. I recommend this book and all of Chinua Achebe's work to any and everyone.

I was not forced to read any of his books. I was just curious. It exposed me to some of the greatest literature I could ever have known. Arrow of God is by far my favorite Achebe book. So if you think Things Fall Apart is good, Arrow of God is so much deeper. You get to know the characters so much better. You feel like you are part of the scene. It is more personal. You see more into different people's lives. I read a lot of books. This one is one of my favorite.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Another Chinua Masterpiece By Elijah Chingosho "Arrow of God" is another excellent novel by the world renowned Chinua Achebe. I have read this novel perhaps five times, having first read it decades ago. I still get thrilled and marvel at the ability of Chinua Achebe to tell a good story that keeps the reader wanting to read more. I have also read "Things Fall Apart" and "Man of the People", which are all excellent reading for those interested in African literature. The story is set in a traditional Igbo village in Western Nigeria where the author traces how the age old traditions that had stood the test of time were systematically eroded by colonial rule. An important lesson we learn is that we need to change with the times and be adaptive to the constant changes, otherwise we perish. This is a well written book by a remarkable author that is very interesting to read as well as enlightening.

Which over-arching decisions made by the Confederacy or Union had a greater effect on the course of the war than generally thought? Were there lauded command changes that may not have been as beneficial as presumed? How intertwined were the business aspirations on both sides of the conflict and what role did disinformation play in key battles? In Lee’s Lost Dispatch and Other Civil War Controversies, New York Times “Disunion” contributor Philip Leigh presents twelve stories from these turbulent times that afford a better understanding of how the war unfolded and how it was fought. The stories range from the Union’s delayed introduction of repeating arms and why a commercial steamer and not a warship was sent to relieve Fort Sumter to how Robert E. Lee’s critical dispatch at the battle of Antietam may have been lost and whether Southern poverty is the most protracted legacy of the war. Written to promote discussion and debate, this volume will intrigue those who enjoy Civil War history and contemplating alternatives to many assumed conclusions.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Finally! Something Truly New About the Civil War By Alfred Loomis Until I read this book I did not realize how vulnerable Lee’s Army was shortly before the battle of Sharpsburg. He had sent two-thirds of his army under Stonewall Jackson to capture Harpers Ferry and kept the other third about twenty-five miles north in Maryland, not far from the Pennsylvania border. Furthermore, Stonewall’s command was divided into three parts besieging the triangular shaped defense perimeter of Harpers Ferry. Each of Stonewall’s elements was separated from the others by at least one river crossings.Meanwhile, Union General George McClellan had a numerically superior army in a position where it could quickly concentrate between Lee and Jackson. After one of McClellan soldiers found a lost order from Lee to a field commander, McClellan knew of Lee’s vulnerability. But beyond explaining the strategic situation and the resulting outcome, this book explores how the order was lost and who was responsible. There are about ten chapters, each focusing on seldom-examined controversies of the war that, upon consideration, turn out to be far more important than generally supposed. One example is in the chapter “Pre-Empting the Civil War.” Leigh reminds us that the first attempt to relieve Fort Sumter was in January 1865, which was more than three months before the fort was bombarded to start the war. The January expedition was supposed to be escorted by a powerful warship, but at the last moment a merchant vessel was substituted. If a warship, such as the USS Pawnee, had been used South Carolina might have been forced to back down, because no other states had yet seceded and the Pawnee and Sumter had far more firepower than the Carolina Militia.Another intriguing tale is “Florida After Vicksburg,” which explains the Sunshine state’s importance as a source of beef to the rebel armies after Vicksburg fell in the summer of 1863 thereby cutting off most of the Texas cattle from the rest of the Confederacy. I was also fascinated to learn that northerners owned the state’s largest railroad and tried to protect it from Union armies intent on destroying anything of potential value to the Confederacy. Finally, the author reveals his “picks” at the biggest blunders North and South. He selects the belated adoption of breech-loading rifles as the largest Union error and cites the failure to promptly ship as much cotton as possible to Europe where it could be gradually liquidated for specie in order to finance the Confederacy as the biggest blunder by Southerners.Other chapters deal with surprising corruption in the US Treasury and a comparative analysis of the performance of Union Generals George Thomas and William T. Sherman in the 1864 Atlanta campaign. Finally, I liked the author’s thoughtful analysis of the dynamics between President Lincoln and General George McClellan. He perhaps sums it up best when noting that we remember McClellan for what he failed to do as opposed to what he did do.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is a keeper By Joseph Rose I agree with the first four five-star reviewers here. This book is a keeper. Instead of offering the standard, often incorrect, version of American Civil War history, Philip Leigh digs deeply into many of the conflict's controversies. His analysis of why George H. Thomas would have made a better commander of the Military Division of the Mississippi, as opposed to General Grant's choice of William T. Sherman, is alone worth the price of the book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Most general readers will find it both easy to read and enjoyable to contemplate By civilwarlibrarian Biggest Confederate Error? Biggest Federal Error? Could the war have been preempted in January 1861? How many times was Atlanta burned? Should Thomas have been chosen over Sherman in Spring 1864? Eleven chapters focus upon controversies with a glace in the direction of alternate histories. Not far from the mind of the author is the question is 'if one thing had been changed'. Philip Leigh's Lee's Lost Dispatch and Other Civil War Controversies, Philip Leigh offers eleven episodes that challenge readers' understanding of the significance of particular turning points of the war. When contemplating alternatives to conventional conclusions and analyses, Leigh invites discussions and debates on the Confederacy's King Cotton diplomacy and fiscal policy, the Federal policy of breech loading and repeating rifles, Buchanan's choice of ships sent to relieve Fort Sumter, Salmon Chase's solutions to the Federal war debt and its relation to his daughter, her husband William Sprague, and money broker Jay Cooke.Several chapters take relatively new paths. How did Florida become so important to the Confederacy after Vicksburg surrendered in July 1863? In 1864 at Spring Hill Tennessee were Hood, Cheatman and Cleburne victims of behind-the-Confederate lines Union spies? Was Lincoln wrong to keep McDowell's 40,000 troops out of McClellan's hands in June 1862? Leigh suggests a logical change of one link in the chain of events and shows that much of the Civil War was contingent on a particular person reaching an ill-informed opinion or having a predisposition to dismiss information out-of-hand.Many readers approach the American Civil with the notion that 'it happened this way' and the causes-and-effects are immutable. Regarding reasonable possibilities, Leigh gently offers suggestions at the conclusion of most chapters. These brief remarks offers tips on how to handle evidence, primary documents, gaps in the records, and the possibility of variations of the well-worn path of most Civil War books written for the general audience. The narrative style Lee's Lost Dispatch and Other Civil War Controversies is clear and not complexly written. Most general readers will find it both easy to read and enjoyable to contemplate. Leigh's previous work Trading With The Enemy: The Covert Economy During the American Civil War was similarly accessible and eye-opening.

From the Author Look to the sky, lest you doubt me. Come a clear night, gander the heavens until your eyes glaze over and the desire for sleep weighs heavy on your lids. If luck be with you, you might witness the Eye of the Ur wandering in the dark. You will see what the Ur have waiting for us. You will begin to understand what the Sleeper has in store...   ...in other words, the Nether Kingdom is here. The third book in the Tyrants of the Dead trilogy, Nether Kingdom is the darkest yet. Andelusia returns with a vengeance, a new villain rises to power, and a fallen warlord is resurrected to wreak destruction on the world. The sequel to Dark Moon Daughter is Tolkienesque in its epic scope, yet utterly human in its tone.

Since their move from St. Louis in 1954, the Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most storied teams in baseball and home to legends like Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr. From the “Oriole Way” — which earned them eight Division Championships, six American League pennants, and three World Series Championships — to “Orioles Magic” at Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards, Baltimore Orioles: 60 Years of Orioles Magic is a comprehensive exploration of the team’s enduring legacy. Longtime sports journalist Jim Henneman takes us through the team’s colorful history as well as into the dugout and behind the plate to deliver unprecedented access, while legendary Orioles personalities and players offer anecdotes and firsthand memories. Complementing this comprehensive history are many rare and never-before-seen images from the Orioles’ archive, as well as replica ephemera, including vintage tickets, scorecards, posters, and more. Commemorating six decades of the franchise, Baltimore Orioles: 60 Years of Orioles Magic is a uniquely authoritative and engrossing visual history that is certain to appeal to baseball fans of all generations.

It is the kind of book that the reader can't wait to see what is on the next page. Great job by Jim Henneman.

It is basically a chronological summary of each season since 1954. Would have been nice if it included statistics, team records, information on Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards. But still a nice book, and if your a life long Orioles fan like myself, you will enjoy this.

Everything Caribbean (except pirates) By Eric Sedensky This is one of the biggest and best Fodor books I have ever seen, and having been to 52 different countries, usually with a guidebook in hand, I’ve seen my share. This book is almost 1200 pages and covers all the countries and territories listed below. Oddly, several major Caribbean destinations, like Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas are not included, presumably because there are dedicated guidebooks from Fodor for those locales. Instead, this book includes some hidden gems, like Montserrat, Saba, and St. Eustatius (the latter having been featured on a House Hunters episode on HGTV). Including these in this guidebook is just a nice touch.Although this book is in full color, there aren’t that many photos. The introduction pages give a lot of good information that is helpful in determining where to go in the Caribbean, and each destination chapter includes a photo, map, and a few “top reasons to visit”. All of that is helpful in deciding if a destination is for you, but some information on population, currency, language, and more “down to earth” facts would have been welcome. Still it’s a great start to learn about the area, especially the geography, since it probably is not too realistic to think one will visit all of those countries and territories. As a general overview of the entire Caribbean, this is a great book, but at almost two and a half pounds, it isn’t a very portable guidebook. But, for being so comprehensive, interesting, and useful for vacation planning, it’s hard to imagine a better resource, which is why I still rate it at five stars.Countries:Antigua and Barbuda, 34 pagesBarbados, 51 pagesDominica, 30 pagesDominican Republic, 64 pagesGrenada, 38 pagesJamaica, 62 pagesSt. Kitts and Nevis, 42 pagesSt. Lucia, 44 pagesSt. Vincent and the Grenadines, 44 pagesTrinidad and Tobago, 46 pagesTerritories:Anguilla (UK), 28 pagesAruba (Netherlands), 36 pagesBonaire (Netherlands), 26 pagesBritish Virgin Islands (UK), 58 pagesCayman Islands (UK), 60 pagesCuraçao (Netherlands), 34 pagesGuadeloupe (France), 50 pagesMartinique (France), 44 pagesMontserrat (UK), 18 pagesPuerto Rico (US), 50 pagesSaba (Netherlands), 16 pagesSt. Barthélemy (France), 32 pagesSt Martin (France) / St. Maarten (Netherlands), 44 pagesSt. Eustatius (Netherlands), 15 pagesTurks and Caicos Islands (UK), 45 pagesUnited States Virgin Islands (US), 96 pages

By Gadget Girl I have been to the Caribbean on cruises several times and was looking for new things to check out in the islands on our upcoming cruise. This guide provides a great overview to the Caribbean and about 30 pages on each island. I love that it is full color and the pages don't feel cheap. The first section has a map of the Caribbean and an "island finder" that gives ratings for each island in terms of things like cost, beaches, dining, shopping, casinos, nightlife, diving, golf, eco-tourism, good for families. This is nice to help narrow down islands if you are trying to plan a week-long trip or select your cruise itinerary (Eastern, Southern or Western). The guide then goes into some general information about the Caribbean and rates some top overall pics for things like beaches, golf, boating, diving and snorkeling, shopping. There is brief coverage on when to go, hurricane season, weddings, kids and families, local food and drinks. Then each island is covered alphabetically. There is a map, info on logistics/getting around, things to do, beaches, dining and hotel recommendations, nightlife, shopping, water sports, golf, tours and excursions. Most of the islands have around 30 pages of coverage, with more coverage for larger islands such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. British VI are grouped together, as are the US Virgin Islands. Overall this is a great overview to narrow down where you might like to visit within the Caribbean, and the full color photographs are stunning. For being over 1000 pages, it is not overly bulky but the pages are good quality, not too flimsy to read and a nice quality print and photographs. Reviewing a few of the islands I've been to many times like St. Maarten, St. Thomas - the recommendations and things to do are spot on to hit the major attractions and options of things to do. If you are visiting just one island, of course you may like something more comprehensive (a guide for just that island). But this is a well-organized and well thought-out guide that is great for down-selecting vacation ideas or cruise planning.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fodor's is a favorite! By RMurray847 Fodor guidebooks tend to be my favorites (other than the great Rick Steves books of Europe), and this book is no exception. My wife and I are taking a Southern Caribbean cruise in April '16, and this book is proving very helpful in trying to decide which activities to undertake on which islands. The information is organized by island, and then each chapter is organized by things to do, places to stay, places to eat, etc. Very simple and effective. There are modest maps for each island in the book...nothing you could really use to drive by, but good to help orient you. I would say that each individual island's section is not THE most comprehensive, definitive guide you could ever have to that specific island BUT as a good overview of the entire Caribbean, with certainly enough detail to give you enough information to get by, this book can't be beat. For cruisers like us, there's enough info to help us decide what activities to focus on during our port stops...where should we snorkel, where should we zip line, what place is good for a historic tour, etc. No, not every single tour guide or outfit is listed BUT I have enough now that when googling "shore excursions" for a given island, I'll be more than set with what I'm looking for.If you are planning to spend some time at a specific island, but aren't sure which one you want...this book can give you a good strong picture of each island and really help you either narrow your search or get it done completely. You'll be steered towards the best places to eat, (and each place is placed into categories like "International", "Asian", "American", etc.) and the best places to sleep. Info about car rentals, bike rentals, airports, transfers, etc. is all there as well. The only downside is that this book is HEAVY! It's so comprehensive, and there are so many islands, it takes up a lot of pages. If you were visiting, let's say Barbados only, it would be daunting to lug this book with you. You'll either make copies of the relevant pages or find a thinner book just on Barbados.
