About the Author Lynn Barber is an award-winning British journalist. Several collections of her interviews have been anthologised. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Interesting if you are a fan of Barber's interviews but... By Shopper I found it rather sloppily written. Tossed off. I'm also rather disappointed that she is a self-confessed philistine. Doesn't seem to enjoy or even understand the arts. For someone who has grown up in the 60s, she is surprisingly conservative about many things...especially marriage. Her self-consciousness begins to grate after the first chapters. Seems she wants to deny she has a depressive personality which would explain many things rather than the trite and jolly explanations she gives. I have both collections of her interviews which I have read and reread often but reading her memoir left me feeling less admiration for her.

I'm from the same generation as Lynn Barber; I've reached the stage in my life when I know what I like and I'm not going to do anything anymore that I don't like. Well, not if I can help it anyway. One of the things I certainly no longer enjoy is reading interviews with actors. You trudge through yards and yards of newsprint only to *discover* that, yes, they love to play 'challenging parts' and, yes, they 'can't wait to work with the director again' and, oh yes, they prefer to keep 'their personal lives private'. And just like that, another half-hour of your precious life has disappeared down the plug-hole.One interviewer I always do read however, even when she's interviewing an actor, is of course the Demon Barber. And in this book we learn why her interviews always prove to be so interesting. Firstly, it's because she does her homework, spending a huge amount of time on research before the interview (so she won't ask the interviewee something they've been asked a hundred times before). She wastes not a second of precious interview time and refuses to do less than a one hour interview (she explains how nowadays even serious interviewers get trapped by the PR machine into flying half way round the world for a 15-minute slot with a star.) She always tapes her interviews (so perhaps 'a bouquet of wired barbs' would be a more accurate header) and spends at least a week writing them up.This book contains the background to a selection of interviews, all of which make fascinating reading, even the ones where people I like or admire come off rather badly (Martin Clunes and Rafa Nadal). A Curious Career also updates the reader on Barber's terrific memoir An Education. Lynn Barber is self-aware, occasionally acerbic (and therefore sometimes quite scary), intuitive, intelligent and she also comes across as devastatingly honest. Above all, she is genuinely interested in people. This book is highly recommended for anyone who feels the same.

Disappointing and self-reverential - not fun to read and nasty tone makes it ugly By NY Believer After all the review hype, I looked forward to reading this book, and I was terribly disappointed. Ms. Barber says that finding a husband is more important than any career - then never says why she continues to work (clearly for money, not for artistry). She hates interviewing actors, considering them beneath her for some reason - but she happily takes money for working with them. There are many rehashed, old interviews that we could have done without - there is a reason why she is unknown in the US, it's because she's not a great writer by any means. The nasty, judgemental sections about Martin Clunes and Rafael Nadal just show how little skill she has - clearly she likes to shock her audience, but it's really about her opinions of other people, the person being interviewed should be the star of the piece, but Barber makes it about herself. The chapter about Marianne Faithful is a hoot - as Barber goes out of her way to put down this icon, writing negative stuff at all times, then rehashes an old article which we are supposed to think is great (it's far from great, it's just ugly), and then she finally writes about Ms. Faithful talking to real journalists about Barber, something about apologizing to her? What for, we wonder - for Barber behaving unprofessionally and interrupting a photo shoot with David Bailey, as if Barber has something better to do? Like her "dinner with friends" is so vitally important that a photo shoot with 2 icons from the 60s should stop for her? WHAT?! Despite her lack of training or talent, Barber is so self-centered, she thinks the celebrities she interviews should just talk about her! You learn that Barber never had any training in journalism, just 7 years at Penthouse (hardly a great training ground for a WRITER, now perhaps as a photographer...) and she coasts from job to job on her connections. We can guess that, because her writing is terrible, nasty and often just boring. Having had this little sample of her "work," which she would NOT be doing if she could find a husband to live off of, I have learned the hard way to avoid her in future - which won't be difficult, as she is and will remain an unknown outside of a small UK readership. Avoid this book, it's not worth reading for any reason.

About the Author John Ferling is professor emeritus of history at the University of West Georgia. He is the author of many books on American Revolutionary history, including The Ascent of George Washington; Almost a Miracle, an acclaimed military history of the War of Independence; and the award-winning A Leap in the Dark. By Ferling’s own words, Whirlwind differs from other histories of the American Revolution in emphasizing the causal role of economic factors (along with rage against Britain and a desire for a freer world), its position that Americans were happy with the imperial relationship until the 1760s, it focus on the war rather than the political rebellion, the attention it pays to what was happening in England, and by beginning in the 1760s and ending with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Ferling is also very critical of British handling of the colonies and their prosecution of the war, and he is relatively critical of Washington, especially as a military leader.The focus on what was happening in England is particularly notable. Unfortunately, much of that attention tails off after war breaks out and from then on we mostly just hear about the generals on American soil. Ferling needs the space, though, because he also hits on the experiences of black Americans, women, the lower class, and Loyalists well, if only briefly.For example, the British threatened the southern states by offering freedom to slaves who fled their masters and threw in with the British. Washington, southern planter that he was, was initially very reluctant to tap America’s black population for military support but quickly changed his opinion. Eventually around 5,000 blacks enlisted in the Continental army, accounting for roughly 5% of Continentals. Moreover, “they served in integrated units, something that would not occur again in the United States Army until the Korean conflict 175 years later.” And while independence did not lead to the end of slavery as many Founding Fathers erroneously believed it would, the free black population in Virginia jumped from 1% in pre-Revolution Virginia to 7% in 1810, with “[t]he percentage of free blacks within the United States doubl[ing] within the same period, jumping to nearly 14 percent of the total number of African Americans.” Female camp followers, many of them wives of soldiers, “averaged about 3 percent of the number of soldiers,” and many followed the men into battle despite Washington’s best efforts.Ferling is an advocate for poor Americans. He can’t see them as mere cats’ paws in the Boston riots. They may not have read Locke, but Ferling thinks they appreciate the basics of the arguments. (I tend to agree.) And Ferling points out, for example, that the soldiery evolved over the course of the war from “something of a cross-section of freemen in America” to “young, poor, single men who owned no property.” Loyalists don’t get a high level of attention but neither are they ignored. How could they be? Roughly 19,000 Loyalists bore arms for the British. 4,000 died. Another 60,000 fled in exile. Innumerable Loyalists lost their lands and their livelihoods.Granted Ferling’s focus is not on the political rebellion, but I wish he had more to say about an ineffective initial government that couldn’t properly support the prosecution of the war (he does touch on Congress’ failings regarding the quartermaster service). The committees of correspondence and the Association committees, which I knew little about, are covered. Both were important. They built a new political infrastructure and were highly effective at organizing the boycott of British goods—“the value of British imports during 1775 was just 5 percent of that of the previous year.” And the formation of the Continental Congress was followed by a surge of new, more radical men into local American politicsFerling continues to a good job at one of my favorite things about his biography of John Adams—flagging where there is significant disagreement among historians. He also makes frequent mention of possible turning points in the war without getting bogged down in counterfactuals. Absent my quibble above, I have little-to-no complaint with how Ferling allocated the pages of a single volume covering a long war.And what a war it was, one of the bloodiest in American history. Something like 200,000 American men served in some capacity, which works out to roughly…all of them, free and of military age (positively Towton-esque). 30,000 died, “a percentage roughly equal to the toll of regulars in the Civil War and nearly ten times greater than among those who soldiered for the United States in World War II.” Some 10,000 of the men fighting for independence (counting militiamen and privateers as well as Continentals) died in confinement. And it wasn’t just those fighting for American independence who died. A quarter of the British and German soldiers did (roughly 17,500 men).It was a big war. The expeditionary force the British put together to seize New York wouldn’t be matched until WWI. It was also a world war. We Americans tend to see the war entirely through the lens of our own revolution. But there was also fighting in the Caribbean, Africa, and India. A lot of Americas know, for instance, that the French provided material support (they provided nearly of our artillery and about 90% of the weapons and ammunition). But they also drew British soldiers away to the Caribbean, etc. This is by no means a history of that world war, but it provides a context that is welcome.The names that every school kid in America hears show up: Paul Revere, Trenton, Valley Forge, Saratoga, Benedict Arnold, Cornwallis, but Ferling also covers plenty of other important battles and persons. I would love to read a book just on the war in the southern states, but Ferling gives what I think is a too often neglected theater of the war the attention it is due. But first we see a catastrophic week and a half for the British from December 25, 1776 to January 3, 1777, during which the British lost 1,730 soldiers to America’s 155. We see Washington lose one in five of the men who entered Valley Forge that ugly winter (almost 7% of the American soldiers who died in all of the eight-year war). We see Washington fiddle while America burns (ok, it wasn’t that bad, but Ferling is harshly critical of Washington’s inactivity for the middle of the war). Ferling includes my very favorite story from the Revolutionary War, starting with a bombastic proclamation from the British and ending with their humiliation by my hillbilly forebears at the Battle of Kings Mountain (casualties included the geographical apostrophe). We see that battle and four more (with mention of innumerable skirmishes), engagements that were, win or lose, too costly for the British to continue, leading up to Corwallis’ surrender at Yorktown.Let’s talk about individuals. Washington, of course, looms large. John Adams finds frequent mention, unsurprising given that Ferling wrote a biography of the man. Benjamin Franklin is another frequent flier. Ferling juxtaposes Franklin’s many reasons to be partial to the British against his public humiliation by the government. Alexander Hamilton appears briefly but in usual overachieving fashion. He was writing tracts by the time he was nineteen, arguing that Britain could not win a war against the colonists because France would give aid and the colonists could “harass and exhaust” the British through Fabian, insurgent tactics. The less well known Pennsylvanian Joseph Galloway is the most prominent Loyalist (who notably argued that the colonies needed a stronger, more centralized government in America).Disclosure: I received a complimentary advance copy of Whirlwind via NetGalley.

How and why the American Revolution "was caused and driven by economic factors and colonists' desire to control their destiny" By Robert Morris I was and remain intrigued by John Ferling's unique approach to the American Revolution, one that he explains in the Preface: "The book differs from most other histories of the American Revolution in several ways. It emphasizes that the colonial insurgency was caused, and driven, by economic factors and by the desire of the colonists to exercise greater control, over their destiny, which in itself often had an economic basis. I don't suggest that ideas about freedom and liberty sere unimportant; ideas provided a prism for how the colonists saw themselves and the actions of leaders in the mother country. Nor was ambition insignificant. The desire to improve one's lot -- whether economically or by gaining power and renown -- shaped the conduct of a great many actors in the Revolution. Men such as Adams and George Washington spoke frankly of the yearning for honor and reputation."Ferling does indeed focus not just on the colonies but on the mother country as well, examining the choices faced by the imperial leaders and the reasons for their decisions. There were foes of the British policy toward the colonists at every step and, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, a majority of the colonists were royalists. Adams suggested that judgment and courage would be required "to ride in this Whirlwind." I agree with Ferling: "The great promise of America was that it really had begun the world anew." The Revolutionary War may have been over but not the American Revolution.Presumably this is what Joseph Ellis has in mind when suggesting, in The Quartet, that four founders were essential to winning what he characterizes as "the second American Revolution." As he explains, "a political quartet [Washington, Hamilton, Jay, and Madison] diagnosed the systemic dysfunctions under the Articles, manipulated the political process to force a calling of the Constitutional Congress, collaborated to set their agenda in Philadelphia, attempted somewhat successfully to orchestrate the debates in the state ratifying convention s, then drafted the Bill of Rights as an insurance policy to ensure state compliance with the constitutional settlement. If I am right, this was arguably the most creative and consequential act of political leadership in American history."I am deeply grateful to John Ferling for each of his previously published books and especially for his latest because, with rigor and eloquence, he brings to life persons and events that converged prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. These are his concluding observations: "In his first days as president, Jefferson, using a nautical metaphor, reflected in letters to friends that although the American Revolution had sailed through stormy seas, it 'stood the waves into which she was steered with a view to sink her.' But the American Revolution had at last arrived safely in port. The birthday of a new world was indeed at hand. America, President Jefferson continued, had 'returned...to sentiments worthy of former times' -- those of 1776."

The larger picure of the revolution By Dr. D A Dworaczyk This was a fascinating book, looking at a much more global view of the revolution and what was transpiring in England as well as in France and the rest of Europe. The author does a great job of weaving various threads of information together to paint a very complex and intricate picture of the whole situation. As with any major historical vent, nothing is a simple as it appears and there is a lot more to the story, if one looks. This book looks into that whole picture in a very interesting way. I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot of the mitigating circumstances that affected the outcome of the revolution as well as the face of Europe at the same point in history. This is a well written and interesting book.

On February 20, 2003, the deadliest rock concert in U.S. history took place at a roadhouse called The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island. I have worked extensively with family members and fellow survivors for the past 9 1/2 years in fundraising and offering financial and emotional support. With that being said, I truly felt as though I knew all there was to know about the fire as well as the people it affected. I have lived and breathed it since the very first night. I was wrong. I have been asked countless times to talk about that night and tell people what "really happened". I now intend to point them toward this book.It is a comprehensive and educational account of the facts surrounding the fire and the aftermath. You could read hundreds of newspaper articles (and there are certainly hundreds) that would not give you the concise and accurate information found here.I applaud John Barylick and his fellow attorneys for this daunting undertaking and the hard work they put in in order to bring some sense of comfort to those affected. Attorneys are often vilified for "taking advantage" of a situation. Those involved in this case (the majority) did it for the right reasons. Without their perseverance and tenacity, so many of the victims' families and survivors would have added financial decimation to their already devastating emotional and physical losses.I encourage you to educate yourself by reading this book. Remember the loss of life and those who will live with the physical and emotional scars forever. Remember what happened, and honor those lost, by helping to make sure it never happens again.

By Ron Geren As a building code consultant, I would make this a "must read" for architects, contractors, interior designers, building owners, business owners, fire and building inspectors, attorneys, insurance inspectors, and anybody associated with the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and regulation of buildings.It is an anatomy of an event that should not have happened. The book explains the ignorance, arrogance, negligence, and greed that came together to create a setting that, once ignited, would kill and injure so many.Particularly interesting is the detailed post-event posturing of key players and the ensuing legal battles.The author adds sufficient technical detail to explain why things happened the way they did--why the fire was so intense, why the smoke was so thick, and why the exits failed.And finally, the personal stories, which make The Station Nightclub fire more than just a statistic in the history books. The personal stories add a human dimension to the event that should cause people to think that the decisions they make could have consequences that can affect the lives of others.

Swanton The day after the Station Fire, I remember thinking :"How could 96 people (later, 100) die in a nightclub fire in America in this day and age?". This book answers it. It answers it so clearly, and with such an emphasis on the banality of greed and laziness that set the tragedy in motion, I feel like I was naive before reading it. It leaves you feeling that it is probably going to happen again somewhere else.The description of the fire is riveting. The stories of individuals that night will leave you saddened, impressed, and infuriated. So will the stories about the actions of individulas in the days, months and years following the fire. The tone deaf cowardice and selfishness, sometimes bordering on evil, of some of the people responsible is stunning. The one exception here is Daniel Biechele, the band manager who unwittingly set the event in motion, who took full responsibility for his part from almost the moment it happened. Sadly, his story is the rare one here.It is not all gloom and doom, however. The inspiring stories of the survivors, and the amazing ability to forgive of survivors, and some of the victims' families, adds a bit of sunlight into an otherwise dark tale.The book is told in a fast paced, informative style that covers every aspect of the fire, from what led up to it, how the building's layout played a part, to the science of fire and how it was a lopsided race between the quick-moving fire and the people trying to escape it.The author has a personal stake in the story(he represented victims), but even with a few asides that leave you no doubt as to his true feelings for some of the particulars, he delivers a pretty straightforward, compelling and excellent accounting of a terrible tragedy. An accounting that one hopes will act as a cautionary tale for future situations similar to the one that led up to this fire. However, after reading how this horrific night in Rhode Island happened, I am doubtful.

Once you get past that, this story will suck you right in. You can see the movie playing in your mind as you read. The inappropriate connection of student and teacher happens in our present world more often than I'm sure its reported. But once the news story goes away, we never know what can happen next. In this screenplay Michael-Patrick allows the reader a glimpse into the affect this has on their families, neighbors, school, friends and community after the indiscretion occurs. It questions who really is the victim and how can the two women on opposites sides of this case not really be very different from each other. This is a MUST read! And if you are someone who can make this into a movie you NEED to do it!

By Wilbur S I had always been aware of the utility of videos in creating a positive interpretation of a product or service from my own experiences watching them. Now that I'm involved with a startup of my own, I have to think about how to actually execute on a quality video marketing approach without expensively spinning my wheels with experimentation and uneducated forays. From the Author HENRY CABOT LODGE (1850-1924) was born in Boston, educated at Harvard, and admitted to the bar in 1876. Before beginning his long career in the U.S. Senate (1893-1924), he edited the North American Review (1873-76), was lecturer on American history at Harvard (1876-79), and edited The International Review (1880-81). In addition to his distinguished tenure as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1887 to 1893, he wrote historical works including the biographies of his great-grandfather George Cabot (1877). His other works include noted biographies of Alexander Hamilton (1882) and of George Washington (1889), as well as a nine-volume edition of the works of Hamilton (1885).

About the Author Henry Cabot Lodge (1850 1924) was a Republican senator and historian from Massachusetts. He is best known for his positions on foreign policy, especially his battle with President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 over the Treaty of Versailles. He graduated from Harvard College and was the first student to graduate Harvard University with a PhD in political science. Lodge was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1878 and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1880 1881; he also represented his home state in the United States House of Representatives from 1887 1893 and in the Senate from 1893 1924. He is the author of a number of historical works, including "Alexander Hamilton", "Hero Tales from American History", "Theodore Roosevelt", and many others.

3 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great Educational Source about Daniel Webster By Daria Daniel Webster contributed a large potion of the Civil War. To begin, he was born in Salisbury, New Hampshire on January 18, 1782. His parents were farmers so many people didn't know what to expect of him. Even though his parents were farmers, he still graduated from Dartmouth College in 1801. After he learned to be a lawyer, Daniel Webster opened a legal practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1807. Webster quickly became an experienced and very good lawyer and a Federalist party leader. In 1812, Webster was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives because of his opposition to the War of 1812, which had crippled New England's shipping trade. After two more terms in the House, Webster decided to leave the Congress and move to Boston in 1816. Over the next 6 years, Webster won major constitutional cases in front of the Supreme Court making him almost famous. Some of his most notable cases were Dartmouth College v. Woodward, Gibbons v. Ogden, and McCulloch v.Maryland. He made himself the nations leading lawyer and an outstanding skilled public speaker or an orator. In 1823, Webster was returned to Congress from Boston, and in 1827 he was elected senator from Massachusetts. New circumstances let Daniel Webster become a champion of American nationalism. With the Federalist Party dead, he joined the National Republican party, he joined with Westerner Henry Clay and then endorsing federal aid for roads in the West. In 1828, since Massachusettses had shifted the economic interest from shipping to manufacturing, Webster decided to back the high-tariff bill of that year to help the small new manufacturing businesses grow. Angry southern leaders condemned the tariff, and South Carolina's John C. Calhoun argued that South Carolina had the right to nullify or ignore the law. Replying to South Carolina's Robert Hayne in a Senate debate in 1830, Webster triumphantly defended the Union states by a very powerful but short speech. He said, "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable," made him a favorite and made him well known among many people worldwide. Webster and President Andrew Jackson joined forces in 1833 to try to change South Carolina's attempt to abolish the tariff, but Webster and the Whigs battled him on other issues including his attack on the National Bank. Webster ran for the presidency in the election of 1836 as one of the three Whig candidates, but he mostly only Massachusetts voted for him so he lost badly because no one else voted for him. For the rest of his career he tried very hard to get to the presidency and ran in many elections hoping to get his shot at the office, but it never happened and he failed every time. In 1841, Daniel Webster came close to his idea of President but was only named secretary. President William Henry Harrison appointed him to this position. When he got killed in April 1841, John Tyler was brought to the presidency. In September 1841, all the Whigs resigned from the cabinet except Webster. He remained to settle an argument with Great Britain having to do with the Maine-Canada boundary and he wanted to finish the Webster-Ashburn Treaty, which he finally did in 1842. The Whigs finally pressured Webster enough so that he would leave the cabinet with everyone else in May of 1843. The annexation of Texas in 1845 and the war with Mexico, both which, were disliked by Webster, forced the country to face the issue of expansion of slavery. Webster opposed the expansion but feared even more the separation of the union over the dispute of the expansion of slavery. In a powerful speech on March 7, 1850, he supported the Compromise of 1850, lowering southern threats of separation but urging northern support for a stronger law for the recovery of fugitive slaves. Webster was again named secretary of state in July 1850 by President Millard Fillmore and supervised the strict enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act. Webster's stand on the Act divided the Whig party, but it helped preserve the Union and keep it together for a little while after until the Civil War started.

This book has everything you need when wanting to learn about the beautiful-exciting city of Paris. With so many things to see and places to go it's nice to have a reference book around. The best thing though is the year out map in the back of the book - I kept this with me everyday, especially for finding metro lines!

This particular book has a great lamenated map which you can carry in your pocket. And they usually have 3D Image of the main attractions and historical landmarks, not to mention the great colorful pictures. Book is informative. You can not go wrong with this company.

Very disappointing (review may contain slight spoilers) By Misfit This is the first in a planned series of six book and billed as "An American Saga" and comes with a whopping 229 page count. 218 of those pages are story with the final ten being previews of book #2, Maps of Fate, coming out sometime later this year.The first half of this book sets up the main characters, who for different reasons strike out for a new life in America. No matter what country or social background these folks have they all manage to end up on the same ship. Even more coincidental, no matter what their plans are for in America when they arrive they all seem to end up in St. Louis and sign on for the same wagon train. Oh, and they all get there just in time for about the last wagon train out of Dodge, get their wagons and supplies purchased in two days and no matter what their backgrounds seem to be expert at driving those wagons and handling the oxen just like a pro...I'm a believer. Yes, there's a lot more to it than that, but unfortunately a story idea with a lot of potential was ruined by poor execution. The alternating chapters of character set up went on way too long (100+ pages), and frankly by the time it was over I had forgotten much of what went on before - set this book down for a day or two at your own peril, as you may have to back-track for a refresher course. I'd have preferred seeing the book start when the action began, and then liberally sprinkle the story with the character's back history.Secondly, this book is too short and IMHO would have worked better as a trilogy of three big fat books instead of six slimmer editions, giving the reader more *meat* on the bones to convince them to continue. What this reader got was a plateful of unlikable characters and squicky male-fantasy sex that all ties into a mysterious map and a lost treasure of gold in Colorado's San Juan Mountains. The book comes to a dead stop right when the wagon train is pulling out and the adventure prepares to begin.Still not sure? I'll just leave you a couple of quotes from the book, a book that according to the jacket reviewers and authors are comparing to "Lonesome Dove and Centennial"."Her voice resembled a happy wind chime in a light breeze."Note, our wind chime lady was speaking German. Not the most romantic language no matter how beautiful the woman is speaking it ;)"There's was definitely something between my friend Reuben..."????"Jacob growled out a knowing laugh as he ripped the fabric of her blouse down to her waist. He cupped his entire hand around the flesh of her breast. Sarah felt is if this really was not her...She was an observer who simply watched from some strange man and woman. She felt faint...His fingertips inched below her waistband. She opened her mouth again to cry for help, but he reached over to the pitcher stand, grabbed one of the cloth napkins and shoved it roughly between her teeth...She gagged as one of Jacob's thick fingers found her center. She felt a stab of pain as his fiber penetrated her...Her entire body trembled and her thighs shook..."Ick ick ick. Although don't forget we're getting some romance as well as rape so after one of our main pairs has rapturous sex in the baggage car and after they've dressed you'll be treated to stuff like this,"Deep inside her belly, she could feel her body absorbing his seething explosion and her abdomen pulsed with currents of energy. She knew her face glowed and impassioned tears filmed her eyes. 'I...I have never felt like this.'"Not quite my idea of romance. I'll pass on the rest of the series.FTC? Having read a number of reviews here on Amazon, including the one-star ones which excerpted the text, I made the purchase anyway, thinking the book couldn't possibly be as bad as it seems. Trust me on this. it's dreadful. The writing is poor. The text is full of errors and has never been touched by a professional editor. The story lacks any substance and ends just as there is a glimmer of hope that there might actually be a single tale to be told here. The sex borders on rape. I was so appalled by this work that I went to the website of its publisher, Rockin SR Publishing, which has published no fiction other than Threads West. My suspicion is that author Rosenthal owns the house and has, in reality, self-published this work.Do yourself a favor and buy Lonesome Dove. I agree with a previous reviewer who decried any comparison between McMurtry's works and what has been written here. The only similarity is that both of them are available on paper.It should also be noted that while this book is touted as having won 'prestigious' book awards, let the buyer beware. Most, if not all of these 'awards' are from award mills which charge a fee for 'entering' a book, said fee ranging from 60-odd bucks to over ninety, per entry. One site even says, "enter as often as you wish." Ugh.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Most Disappointing Book I've Purchased in Quite Some Time By Delilah I absolutely love American historical fiction. Not nearly enough of it is written to suit my taste, so I was quite excited to find this book and what I had hoped might be a new favorite author. Instead, what I found was bleak disappointment.At first I thought my mistake had been in purchasing this book in audio format. I spend my work commute listening to audio books, and I’ve heard enough of them to recognize the difference between expertly done, engaging narration and flat, amateurish reading. The narrator of Threads West was of the latter variety. The narrator also happened to be the author himself. Rarely is a writer talented enough to “act out” his book in the skillful manner expected of today’s audio books, and this was no exception. The expressionless, stumbling reading—not to mention the obviously subpar recording equipment—was so bad I almost gave it up after the first chapter.But it takes a lot for me to quit on a book before I’ve given it a real chance. (And really, who wants to admit that their money was wasted on a bad book?) I was willing to forgive Mr. Rosenthal for the bad choice he made in deciding to narrate the book himself, and judge the story strictly on its own merits, despite the rather off-putting opening scene. (I think the writer took the “sex sells” adage to heart when choosing where to open the story.)I trudged on through the next chapter. And the next. And the next. But narration aside, the story simply did not improve. Nor did the writing. When a young 19th century woman from Liverpool referred to her parents as “Mom and Dad”, I added Shoddy Research to the list of the book’s faults, and I knew I just couldn’t force myself to continue any further.So Threads West wins a spot on the very short list of books I’ve turned away from within the first few chapters. Compared to Lonesome Dove and Centennial??? I’d love to ask the people who came up with those comparisons exactly they were thinking—or drinking.

I enjoyed the story, the characters. We read this book for Book Club. I considered this "real," and the characters kept one interested and entertained.

Prudish, stubborn, deeply religious, and an obsessive house cleaner who, for years, had bought into her Home Ec teacher's line about how rewarding mopping floors, dusting baseboards, and hanging wet wash could be, sets off on her journey and learns, not just about the wider world,but also what love and marriage really mean.On her way, she's robbed, forced to face the prejudice and prudishness engendered by her parochial life. We see her transformed by new relationships and the challenge of fending for herself, discovering and testing her abilities and her resolve to make a life beyond S. Norfolk and her husband of many years. Finally emerging from the "cocoon of sadness" she'd been wrapped in ever since losing a baby, miscarrying, she discovers new life both within and without, learning she is pregnant again with Cooley's child.This novel is chock full of fine details that establish an historical past, a setting that intrigues not just because of how well it is rendered, but also for its contrast with the time in which we now live, a time when a woman's independent spirit is encouraged rather than a source of worry, gossip, and embarrassment among family, friends, and in her community. But Cooley grows, too, learning to give Rose room for her growth and finally, how to take care of himself without depending on Rose to keep house. Perrel gives us humor, pathos, a well-constructed narrative, and a cast of unique characters-- plenty to keep a reader entertained and interested in the real journey of the novel: how Cooley and Rose renew their marriage and more importantly, their love for each other.

New Southern Voice By NJ Byrne Cooley and Rose is a wonderful novel that will charm its way into your heart with its vibrant characters, powerful prose, and sly insight into the nature of Southern sensibilities. Smart, funny, and poignant, this book captures all the misfires, failures, mishaps, and ordinary madness of a marriage gone awry. Truly one of those books in which every situation seems real and every character is one you wish you had met. There is no putting this book down once you've picked it up. Not a romance plot in the true sense of the genre, but more like a wickedly clever "unromance" that follows the characters of Cooley and Rose from the day of their uncoupling in post war era South Norfolk. As these two embark on their life apart, the author takes us on a journey that examines small town life, human foibles, and the idiosyncratic nature of marriage. The best part is that the character of Rose is no cliched Steel Magnolia! She's small minded, prejudiced, and uncharitable, not the best woman I've ever met in literature. But... Rose's unexpected humanity resonated with me and her surprising turnaround leads to a very satisfying ending. Read this book if you enjoy good Southern storytelling, irresistible characters, and a well-drawn landscape. I look forward to reading more by Terry Perrel.

Amazon and the publisher should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a work with such shoddy formatting. Strangely, verse dialogue is correctly formatted, but prose dialogue is not, which renders this edition unreadable. I still want a copy because of the clarity and value of Jonathan Bate's notes, comments, and glosses, but for the average reader, DO NOT BUY THIS. Here is what the first few lines look like on Kindle or Kindle App, regardless of how you set the font size:COUNTESS In delivering my sone from me, I bury a secondhusband.BERTRAM And I in going, madam, weep o'er my father's deathanew; but I must attend his majesty's command, to whom Iam now in ward, evermore in subjection.SHAMEFUL!!!

It's supposed to be one of Shakespeare's worst plays, but it is truly fascinating. It is subtle, and the conflicts are rich. Here, no one is purely good or bad, and perhaps it's the difficulty of feeling drawn to a variety of characters who are in conflict that makes people dislike this play. The female lead is bravely determined. The male lead is completely controlled by the political situation. Of course he wants his freedom! The adoration that the female lead feels for him must seem like a trap. . . And yet she does feel it, and she's willing to do everything to realize her dream. I love the reality of this play. It isn't glorious like Hamlet, it isn't abject like Lear. Instead, it's a picture of a middle class reality that gives us insight into sex, liberty, love, and authority.

Very good edition By NYC Prof As you would expect from Oxford, this is a very well done edition of the play, with a comprehensive introduction (though I wished for a little more theatre history myself) that covers the major issues in this "problem" comedy (though it is not nearly so much a problem play as, say, Troilus and Cressida, in fact being much closer in many ways to Measure for Measure), several textual appendices, an index, useful textual- and foot-notes (there seem to be a great many phrasings in this play that need explanation--a result of revision?), and two of Shakespeare's direct sources in Erasmus and Painter. There were a few points when I disagreed with the interpreations offered in the footnotes, but overall, the apparatus is excellent.As for the play itself, the main action concerns the efforts of Helen to recapture her husband Bertram, who is given to her by the King as a reward for curing his fistula. He does not think she, as a physician's daughter, is worthy of his station and flees to the wars in Italy without consumating the marriage. The comic subplot involves the exposure of the cowardice of his companion, Paroles. Helen evnetually fulfills the requirements Bertram sets out in a letter--to obtain his ring and bear a child by him--through a bed trick, and the play ends where it began, with the King (echoes of Lear?) offering Diana, who helped in the trick, her choice of husband.Overall, a very good edition of a less popular play.
