Ramirez I selected this book as a place to start understanding the 'beginnings' and the royal monarchies of these three countries which now make up Great Britian. Since then, I have been motivated to select other history e-books offered by Amazon surrounding the early middle ages (and earlier civilizations) to gauge their impact on early Great Britian. This is leisure reading for me - I'm not a history scholar. There is a nice timeline at the end of the book tracing the royal lineage in each of the countries.

It is information dense and probably not for those readers who already have an introductory knowledge of the topic. For me, two out of three were packed with new information. It inspired me to look more deeply into the history of Ireland and Scotland.

I would have liked to learned about keeping and managing office hours. Transitioning from full time job to working for yourself and what to do about helping people when your still at the day job. Also would like to know about Internet marketing for this kind of business with Facebook and Twitter ads. I have been in desktop support for some time and everything else was spot on. If you are considering doing remote work this is awesome.

By Sandra Salisch Sample Sale by Donna Ferrara I feel struck a responsive chord in every shopper- male or female. Of course Brandi takes her searches and purchases to the nth degree. The author draws a picture of a shopper who does not seem to be able to control her shopping and by extension her life. Someone who we may all have met. I enjoyed the twist at the end where Brandi starts a new position (not related to clothing) and meets a new shopping friend._

The author truly captured the "zing" one gets when shopping, the desire for the chase and especially the let down once the item is worn. Truly accentuated the difference between need and obsession! Well done!

Heroes of the “War to end all Wars”

UPDATE: SECOND EDITION - WITH ADDED CONTENT!!

World War I, also known in its time as the “Great War” or the “War to End all Wars”, was an unprecedented holocaust in terms of its sheer scale. Fought by men who hailed from all corners of the globe, it saw millions of soldiers do battle in brutal assaults of attrition, which dragged on for months with little to no respite. Tens of millions of artillery shells and untold hundreds of millions of rifle and machine gun bullets were fired in a conflict that demonstrated man’s capacity to kill each other on an unprecedented scale. The enduring image of World War I is of men stuck in muddy trenches and of vast armies deadlocked in a fight neither could win. There were heroes though. Men who fought against odds so great, that few would survive. These are the stories of just a few. Read about the “Devil Dog” who brought home not one, but two Medals of Honor and was even nominated for a third for his service. Find out more about the German general who came home a hero, and dared to challenge Hitler. He was one of the few that survived doing so. Learn about the “Jungle Fox” and his daring charges. War is hell. Many men don’t survive that those that do are left with a lasting impression of the horrors witnessed. These stories honor those that fought for their countries and the other men who stood beside him. Pick up a copy of your own today.

Comments From Other Readers

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t pay much attention in my history class when it came to wars. They were over so why should I care? History is bound to repeat itself. In terms of war, that’s generally with tragic results. While the war itself was brutal, these brave men highlighted in the book took on immeasurable odds to save the lives of those around them. Starting with a short history of the war, it runs into these amazing stories. I wish I had paid attention when I was younger, but I’m certainly paying attention now.” – Hank (Montana, US) “The heroics of men under the strain of war are something of a marvel. Any man that would willingly sacrifice himself for the life of another is to be commended. To do so repeatedly is heroic. Those that fight in any war for the freedom of others should all be considered heroic. There are some that stand out amongst the rest though. These are some of such stories from men who fought with valour in World War I. The author excels in his description of the history surrounding the war as well as his efforts in extoling the actions of these men. Truly a wonderful book.” – Jacques (Montreal, Canada) Tags: WWI, World War, the great war, war heroes, medal of honor, silver star, navy cross, Germany, French, Belleau Wood, Devil Dogs, Marines, Jungle fox, Africa, Paris, doughboys, mustard gas, Archduke Ferdinand, alliance system, Erik Larson, Dead Wake, The Fall of the Ottomans, Guns of August, Seek out and Destroy, Lawrence in Arabia, Winged victory, flanders field, dauntless, her privates we, the last of the doughboys, alan evans, thunder at dawn, eve of war

About the Author

"Study history, study history. In history lies all the secrets of statecraft." - Winston Churchill

By studying our past, we are able to better understand our future. History happened for a reason, and it's our job to identify and fascinate ourselves with our past successes and failures. This is the creed that Ryan Jenkins follows.

Ryan Jenkins is an advocate learner and experienced historian. He has mainly focused his studies on the events and stories of World War II, World War I, and the Vietnam War. Ryan has spent years in the field conducting intensive research, and personally uncovering relics from the past. He enjoys exploring into historical matters himself, which includes combing through past battlefields, or interviewing other well-known historians.

In his books, Ryan provides in-depth, factual historical stories that are both consuming and gripping. Unlike long drawn, boring historical reads, Ryan's content focuses on hitting key points, while keeping it entertaining and enjoyable. Whether you are researching for a history project or looking to learn more about past events, Ryan's books will suck you in from page one.

When not writing, Ryan enjoys the company of his family and exploring unique areas in the world.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Stories that need to be told By Rachel Horon Since the last World War I veterans has died in the past few years, we only have their stories and their documents to learn from. Books like this one from Ryan Jenkins sheds more light about the prime reason the war even took place. It makes more sense than the drawn out lectures in high school history. Causes of the war are explained, key battles are highlighted, challenges are noted (especially since how soldiers fought in this modern war was nothing like how their ancestors fought before), and heroes are recognized. The soldiers' battle stories include those on land and at sea, in Europe and Africa, and with men who were either British and German. Nimy Bridge and the Battle of Mahiwa are just a few mentioned. The poison gas attacks are also mentioned in detail for their purpose and challenges in treatment. This book is full of detail without being overly academic. If you want to know the basics of the war and some of the day who fought in it, his books is an ideal one to read.

First in series about WW1, hopefully By softballgirl After his excellent series about World War II heroes, Ryan Jenkins wrote another great book, but this time about World War 1 soldiers. Like all Jenkins' books this one is also full of interesting information and it puts WW1 into political, and historical context. It also tells a stories of some heroes and battles in this so called Great War. The book is nicely illustrated with photos, paper clips and pictures from that era and all the stories are told in interesting way.I hope this is just first in the series of books about WW1 from Jenkins.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great read By AJohn1776 I recommend Ryan Jenkins’ books to everyone who is interested in knowing a little more about history , especially the WWI and WWII era. His books are short and interesting. This book is about heroic soldiers and their stories about WWI. Their tales of bravery in their own small way , the way they changed the course of war. Their role in the war was undeniably crucial. While this books is brief, the information provided is enough to keep the reader hooked.

From an award-winning graphic artist and baseball historian comes a strikingly original illustrated history of baseball’s forgotten heroes, including stars of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming teams, semi-pro leagues, foreign leagues, and famous players like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Joe DiMaggio before they achieved notoriety. From a young age, Gary Cieradkowski had a passion for baseball’s unheralded heroes. Inspired by his father and their shared love of the sport, Cieradkowski began creating “outsider” baseball cards, as a way to tell the little-known stories of baseball’s many unsung heroes—alongside some of baseball’s greatest players before they were famous. The League of Outsider Baseball is a tribute to all of those who’ve played the game, known and unknown. Shining a light into the dark corners of baseball history—from Mickey Mantle’s minor league days to Negro League greats like Josh Gibson and Leon Day; to people that most never knew played the game, such as Frank Sinatra, who had his own ball club in 1940s Hollywood; bank robber John Dillinger, who was a promising shortstop and took time out between robberies to attend Cubs games; and even a few US presidents—this book is a rich, visual tribute to America’s pastime. Meticulously researched, beautifully illustrated using a unique, vintage baseball-card-style, and filled with a colorful and rich cast of characters, this book is a prized collector’s item and will be cherished by fans of all ages.

The League of Outsider Baseball: An Illustrated History of Baseball's Forgotten Heroes, by Gary Cieradkowski

Review “Gary Cieradkowski is to me the most interesting artist working in baseball today. His bold graphic style recalls America's poster kings of yore--Edward Penfield, J.C. Leyendecker, Fred G. Cooper--and his love of the game breathes new life into heroes long gone.” (John Thorn, Official Historian for Major League Baseball)“Cieradkowski's artwork is able to capture the player far better than the photos you find in a typical baseball card. These players are more alive, more real than any faded photo. I almost expect them to leap off the card and demand $50 in exchange for an autograph.” (Jim Caple, ESPN)“Gary Cieradkowski's colorful and nuanced baseball art and cards are a romantic and captivating journey into the game's glorious past delivered from a unique and detailed perspective.” (Charlie Vascellaro, Author of Hank Aaron: A Biography)“What began as a formof therapy has become this season’s most beguiling and idiosyncratic book.” (Chicago Tribune)“The League of Outsider Baseball can be read as a reclamation project, although it is also more than that. The illustrations, rendered in vivid throwback style, recall the beautiful old tobacco cards that were manufactured at the turn of the century.’ Based not on photographs but rather on research and imagination, they offer a new lens through which to look at, or think about, these players, a way of bringing them to life." (David L. Ulin, LA Times)“Every few years, a baseball book comes along that isn’t quite like anything before it. The latest candidate for the oddball baseball hall of fame book is The League of Outsider Baseball, a hugely enjoyable volume filled with so many jaw-dropping facts that you will want to start reading from cover to cover.” (Allen Barra, Dallas Morning News)“Cieradkowski’s work leaps into my top 5 nonfiction baseball books.” (Lawrence Toppman, Charlotte Observer)“Cieradkowski might be baseball's Van Gogh.” (MLB.com)

About the Author Gary Joseph Cieradkowski is the artist and writer behind The Infinite Baseball Card Set blog. An award winning graphic artist and illustrator, chances are you have visited or bought something he designed: Bicycle Playing Cards, the music department of Barnes & Noble, the Folgers Coffee can, and the graphics for Oriole Park at Camden Yards, still regarded as the best designed ballpark in the Majors. Growing up a New York Mets fan in the 1970s, Gary learned to live with pain and disappointment until he married his beautiful wife Andrea. The two live happily in Northern Kentucky, unless they discuss the merits of the designated hitter rule.

CHAPTER

1

THE BUSH LEAGUERS

Everyone starts somewhere. Since the earliest days of organized baseball there has been a hierarchy of leagues, organized by their level of talent, all leading up to the major leagues. Today there is a very rigid and regulated system and each big league club has an allotted number of teams at each level that they can have control over. Up until the 1950s this was not the norm. Some teams like the Cardinals and Dodgers had vast farm systems with outposts in almost every state. There was even a saying that went something like “it ain’t a town unless it’s got a Cardinals farm team in it.” These forgotten little towns and the teams that once played there are where the term bush league comes from, meaning far away from the bright lights of the major league cities. While the Cardinals and Dodgers had a continuous flow of new talent to fill their rosters, other teams were shortsighted or too cash-poor to have much of a farm system. The St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators fell into this category and their inability to develop fresh talent reflected in the two trading the position of last place in the American League year after year. It’s always staggering to think that of the millions of players who pass through the ranks of the minor leagues, only a select few make it all the way to the big leagues. Take, for example, the year 1930: The National and American Leagues both consisted of eight teams each with 25 players on the roster. That’s just 400 jobs available at the top level of the game. Now consider that every summer day in 1930 an estimated 4,000 players were playing their hearts out on 160 minor league teams, trying to make the big leagues. For every Hank Greenberg making a name for himself that year there were thousands of guys named Buckshot May and Pinky Pittenger toiling in obscurity for teams like the Des Moines Demons and Jersey City Skeeters. Everyone starts somewhere, and this chapter will show you how a few rose up from the anonymous thousands to become legends of the game.

This is baseball storytelling at its finest, with unheard tales about the Negro Leagues, semi-pro town teams, foreign and low minors. The author/artist/historian’s one-of-a-kind original poses portray the obscure and legendary. His mastery of color, line, and technique -- but best of all, his sense of humor! -- speak the language of the love of the game. A feast for the eyes, mind and heart. This is a book that feels, looks, and smells like a day at the park of Outsider Baseball. A true labor of love dedicated to his mentor and dad. If I could have given it 6 stars out of 5, I would have!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Creative Compilation By George Vrechek The League of Outsider Baseball” by Gary Cieradkowski is a creative compilation of interesting stories about baseball players: famous, infamous and unknown. Cieradkowski is an artist, or is he a writer? He does both by using his baseball card paintings to illustrate the short stories of around 100 players spread over 233 pages.I found things I didn’t know about famous players like Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige and Joe Medwick. You get glimpses of brief participants like Eddie Gaedel, Moonlight Graham and Pete Gray. However, the meat of the book deals with players who may have played in foreign countries, semi-pro leagues, prisons, or in obscurity in the major leagues. They may be heroic, criminal, poorly-treated, unlucky, mentally challenged or geniuses. They are all interesting and enjoyable reading.George Vrechek, Sports Collectors Digest columnist

However, I do so grudgingly because I don't want the author to tarnish my love of the game. In The League of Outsider Baseball by Gary Cieradkowski I was not disappointed! The old baseball card style of art work was a great way to tell the stories visually. And since the book was written from a historian's point-of-view it was spot on in accuracy. I found myself wanting to learn more about the people that Cieradkowski mentioned. My young son also enjoyed me reading him stories about Jackie Robinson and Joe DiMaggio that he hadn't heard before.

The Oxford Handbook of the American Revolution draws on a wealth of new scholarship to create a vibrant dialogue among varied approaches to the revolution that made the United States. In thirty-three essays written by authorities on the period, the Handbook brings to life the diverse multitudes of colonial North America and their extraordinary struggles before, during, and after the eight-year-long civil war that secured the independence of thirteen rebel colonies from their erstwhile colonial parent. The chapters explore battles and diplomacy, economics and finance, law and culture, politics and society, gender, race, and religion. Its diverse cast of characters includes ordinary farmers and artisans, free and enslaved African Americans, Indians, and British and American statesmen and military leaders. In addition to expanding the Revolution's who, the Handbook broadens its where, portraying an event that far transcended the boundaries of what was to become the United States. It offers readers an American Revolution whose impact ranged far beyond the thirteen colonies. The Handbook's range of interpretive and methodological approaches captures the full scope of current revolutionary-era scholarship. Its authors, British and American scholars spanning several generations, include social, cultural, military, and imperial historians, as well as those who study politics, diplomacy, literature, gender, and sexuality. Together and separately, these essays demonstrate that the American Revolution remains a vibrant and inviting a subject of inquiry. Nothing comparable has been published in decades.

I wonder so much if it is amusing to be an adventuress, because that is evidently what I shall become now. I read in a book all about it; it is being nice looking and having nothing to live on, and getting a pleasant time out of life—and I intend to do that! I have certainly nothing to live on, for one cannot count £300 a year; and I am extremely pretty, and I know it quite well, and how to do my hair, and put on my hats, and those things—so, of course, I am an adventuress! I was not intended for this rôle—in fact, Mrs. Carruthers adopted me on purpose to leave me her fortune, as at that time she had quarrelled with her heir, who was bound to get the place.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Terrific Read! By Laurie One day I finally decided to find out who Elinor Glyn was and why her books were all the rage with young ladies at the turn of the century. Of course she was the younger of two very intrepid sisters who both had exquisitely interesting and creative lives ... But that is a story for another book.Red Hair was humorous and delightful. The main character is a treasure --witty, clever, independent, full of life -- I laughed and loved her from the first page . The conclusion of the book is very predictable, but some of Evangeline's adventures along the way are not. Toward the second half of the book I was surprised to find myself highlighting little pithy nuggets of feminine wisdom about men and love. Those things have not changed in 100 years and would make good reading for women today. In short, I just loved this little book and will be searching out more Elinor Glyn in the near future. What a fabulous writer!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun romance novel By LifeboatB I read this after reading Glyn's much more serious-toned "Three Weeks," and was pleasantly surprised at how much more fun it was. It read to me like an early version of the kind of satirical comedy that Anita Loos would later make famous with "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." This book is much more gentle than that, but it has some pretty sharp lines, like "Husbands are a race apart--there are men, women, and husbands" and "Lady Verningham says I am a witch, and a snake, and all sorts of bad, attractive things, and I want to go somewhere where I shall be able to show these qualities." It's hard to believe it was written in 1905. If you enjoy drawing-room comedy, and romances like the work of Georgette Heyer, you'll have a good time reading this. (Originally published in England as "The Vicissitudes of Evangeline;" republished in America as "Red Hair," which was also the title of the Clara Bow movie adaptation in 1928, now unfortunately lost.)This electronic version is pretty good, with only a few typos. I just wish it had the illustrations.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a witty short novel about a young woman By K. Kennedy "Red Hair" by Elinor Glyn is a "pot boiler" of an early 20th century novel. It is the story of a young woman whose promised inheritance does not pan out, and she must find her way in the world. She challenges society's conventions, and the book is full of some pretty witty quips. This book was controversial in its time, though it is not now. This is a short book, but worth reading.

I really liked the walking tours- especially through Gion area- very well done!! And the pull out map was our main navigation source. Worth the price of the book by itself. I've been using Lonely Planet books since the 80's and this book does not disappoint. Also- it's small and light. Going to Kyoto? get this book.It also included stuff about Nara and a few other places around Kyoto- day trips- so that was nice.

We couldn't find one of the recommended restaurants (can't recall the name offhand but it was at the northeast corner of the Imperial Palace gardens), but otherwise found it to be very helpful for our short stay in Kyoto.

For the general public and specialists alike, the Hellenistic period (323–31 BC) and its diverse artistic legacy remain underexplored and not well understood. Yet it was a time when artists throughout the Mediterranean developed new forms, dynamic compositions, and graphic realism to meet new expressive goals, particularly in the realm of portraiture. Rare survivors from antiquity, large bronze statues are today often displayed in isolation, decontextualized as masterpieces of ancient art. Power and Pathos gathers together significant examples of bronze sculpture in order to highlight their varying styles, techniques, contexts, functions, and histories.   As the first comprehensive volume on large-scale Hellenistic bronze statuary, this book includes groundbreaking archaeological, art-historical, and scientific essays offering new approaches to understanding ancient production and correctly identifying these remarkable pieces. Designed to become the standard reference for decades to come, the book emphasizes the unique role of bronze both as a medium of prestige and artistic innovation and as a material exceptionally suited for reproduction.  Power and Pathos is published on the occasion of an exhibition on view at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence from March 14 to June 21, 2015; at the J. Paul Getty Museum from July 20 through November 1, 2015; and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from December 6, 2015, through March 20, 2016.

WONDROUS ANCIENT BRONZE By William Suddaby Jens Daehner and Kenneth Lapatin, both curators at the Getty Villa, have put together a quite important volume of the rare bronze sculpture that has happened to survive from the Hellenistic world--beautifully produced and organized. It consists of eleven essays by international experts and a catalogue of the fifty-five marvelous sculptures in the exhibition, each with lucid commentary by the editors or additional scholars. All of the text is helpfully cross-referenced for easy flipping. This book may not be of keen interest to most casual inquirers into ancient Greek and Roman art, but it may be for some. It is essential reading for the serious student of the classical world. The book is truly valuable for its comtemporary scholarship, including the latest conservatorial and technological advancements. The layout and photos are superb.

Mainzer Ancient Greek bronze statuary is a fascinating topic, reflecting the tremendous technical, artistic and philosophical achievements of the culture that produced it, but it is only partially captured by this volume. Composed to accompany a landmark exhibition that started in Florence (Italy) before moving to California and then concluding in Washington, DC, the essays reflect unresolved tensions between writing for the scholarly crowd (that, for example, knows Greek literature and terminology much of which is not defined here--the sole Appendix contains metallurgical analyses of select works, but there is no glossary) and a lay audience (who would, for example, have benefited from a careful, or indeed any meaningful explanation of how bronze casting was done). The book was available in time for the exhibit's first American showing at the J.P. Getty Museum, and then "out-of-print"; when it returned there was some hope that it had been updated for the showing at the National Gallery of Art (NGA), but unfortunately that is not the case. What is the case is that the NGA installation lacks the exhibition's acclaimed centerpiece, the Terme Boxer, which was returned to Rome in November 2015 for the Papal Jubilee. Also missing from the NGA are the sculptures which originally constituted the exhibit's entire concluding section (still featured in this book) on the iconic Spinario. Thus Power and Pathos will ultimately be unsatisfactory for many general readers seeking to gain an introduction to this fascinating topic and even more so for those trying to understand the exhibition on view during winter 2016 in Washington, DC, which as it happens includes one of the two Runners from the Villa dei Papiri (inv. 5627), which is discussed briefly in the book (figure 8.10), although not in a catalogue entry, and items that are not mentioned at all, including the fine Dancing Faun (of Pompeii), like the Runner a loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, and Artemis and the Stag, a great work sadly disposed of a few years back by the misguided management of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and now in private hands. Caveat emptor!

Brilliant exhibition well documented and illustrated By Blue in Washington Beautifully illustrated and printed catalog (366 pages) for a stunning exhibition that is currently on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC (originating from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles). The catalog is a clearly written and fascinating lesson in art history that goes well beyond the texts that accompany the actual exhibition. The focus of the show and catalog (should call it a book) is the bronze sculpture work of the two-hundred-or-so years of the Hellenistic period when the representation of the human form shifted to a more natural and/or realistic form. The artists were working in wax and bronze which allowed for inclusion of greater expression and physical detail--the results are startling and beautiful. The great pity is that the bronze medium was easily melted down and used for other things (often weapons), so much of the huge sculptural output of the period has been lost. A lot of the pieces in the exhibition have been recovered from shipwrecks and burial sites---truly accidental preservation. The sculpture pictured on the cover of the book is a stunner in person and well documented in the interior, but it is not atypical of the rest of the show which is just fantastic. If you can't make it to Washington DC before the end of the exhibition (March 20, 2016), you should consider buying this catalog.

It is fascinating and sobering at the same time to read these articles so many years later. It gives you great appreciation for the fact that so many in that generation gave their lives for the freedoms we have today. The photographs supplement the articles and include many I have never seen before.
